Anyone got a Barbour?

Debtfreeme · Yesterday 23:19

I have been going round in circles with this for months. I have recently had a significant pay rise and want to continue buying investment pieces of clothing. I have recently came out of an abusive relationship and want to treat myself well.

should I buy a Barbour? I love this one, https://www.barbour.com/gb/icons-tartan-collar-modern-beadnell-waxed-jacket-LWX1582OL71.html?_gl=11mjekn4_upMQ..gs*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjw25fWBhAVEiwAMopNjjuJBIKUwafdXsnpjVZl2Hj7-Ike3RvESbDk6k-590QDQcHSXnxkBoCMUcQAvD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAADtGNrhYTSGU2_0xQyGo4bCUL3A9v

any Barbour fans that would recommend. I have no landrover, dog or tweed cap but I love them 😂

Get one! I've had a few of them. Now have the super long one in a sort of light black. They are just the best. My last one fell to bits and did (to be honest) get a bit stinky but this was over years and years of dog walking. I think you can have them rewaxed but I didn't bother. Only thing is they are not that warm so you can buy zip in inserts but I just wear my long one with a very thin Uniqlo feather jacket underneath when really cold. Before you buy though.. have a look at their current collaborations... they did one with Alexa Chung and do them periodically (I think recently with A.P.C?). I would check those before you purchase in case you like a slightly softer look. But the one you've chosen is a good one just a very trad one which is fine but check out other options. I can't remember their collab this season though... I had the olive colour and now the black as I wanted something that looked a bit more urban (even though I'm walking the dog). They are the best in my opinion.

I love the barbour range at the moment. Some of the coats like that come up big. Also check out other websites such as Very, house of fraser and Flannels. I've seen a few good deals recently. Definitely treat yourself. You deserve it!! 👏

SucksToBeYou · Yesterday 23:46

I love mine. Its the perfect Autumn / Spring coat, I would really recommend them.

Brilliant choice OP! I've had mine for over 20 years, and love it - I had it on today in fact!

I sent it back to Barbour to get re-proofed about 10 years ago and honestly it still looks excellent.

2 things to note:

  1. as @elaineyadayada says, this type isn't particularly warm so buy it big enough so you can wear something cosy underneath if you're liable to be going for long walks in the winter time.
  2. it doesn't come with a hood, so if you want one you'd need to buy it separately.

Congratulations on your pay rise and on getting out of a horrible situation.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Today 06:24

Try it on before you buy! I have a Beadnell and I had to go up 3 sizes!

Pattygonia · Today 06:40

Agree with pp - they’re not super warm but they are classics and incredibly durable. I’ve had mine years and have re proofed it myself (they sell tins of the re proofing wax and it’s straightforward to do)

I do size up with Barbour (I’m tall and not sure if that is why) but I’d definitely try a few on first. The have an outlet at Cheshire Oaks if that’s anywhere near gou

snd congratulations!

Munchie1965 · Today 06:44

I had one but I never really got on with it.

I would not buy another waxed jacket myself. As others have said that are not warm at all.

I just think modern materials are just so much better for waterproofness, warmth and comfort.

Thingsivesaid · Today 07:09

I've got a long green waterproof one, similar to the Stevie coat. Bought it in 2018. Still going and looking good. I love it.

Badgerstriper · Today 07:20

I have one with Liberty lining. Bought for me as a gift in 2009 and still holding up! Agree with warmth though - weigh up when you’ll wear it and size accordingly for jumper underneath.

664eek · Today 07:25

I love mine but you do need to think about what you’d wear it for. They are great in a shower but not in pouring rain. Not very warm so you need something underneath. But incredibly nice to wear and I live in mine for half the year. I also think they look quite stylish compared to a proper waterproof.

DH has long arms and finda the arms on Barbours are too short. My arms are quite short so they work for me, but something to consider.

CaptainCalm · Today 07:54

I wouldn’t hesitate, they’re a classic.

My dad has one that’s over 40yrs old and it’s still going strong. I’ve got a more modern one (with a hood) and it’s ideal for layering up for walks and activities. Or in the rain at school pick up. I’ve had it years and it’s still in excellent condition despite mud, water, branches, thorns etc.

They aren’t particularly warm, but grand with layers and otherwise good for weather such as now when you want something but don’t want to get too hot.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · Today 07:56

My dh has a classic wax and I’ve just bought another quilted fitted navy blue one. I don’t like the feel or small of the wax jackets but love the look. Happy with the quilted one 🥰 and it’s quite warm too

Strangesally20 · Today 08:11

I have one and love it, can’t imagine parting with it but I will be honest, for me it’s an incredibly impractical coat! I live in Scotland so useless for warmth, no hood and it rains constantly here, I don’t find it particularly comfortable, they’re quite stiff. I wear more when I’m looking for that “look” not because it’s a really great coat! Nonetheless it makes me happy even if I’m cold wet and uncomfortable.

Username7258 · Today 08:17

Do you need it to look brand new? There was a bit of a thing a few years ago where worn Barbours were in and they tend to last really well.

That said, that one is gorgeous and I could see if working really well with loads of outfits so both good options.

Arregaithel · Today 08:20

@Debtfreeme save yourself almost £100 if you're a 14, 16 or 18
eta; apologies, not like for like 😞

Thatsanotherfinemess1 · Today 08:23

There is an outlet in somerset. I love mine but it does leave a residue if I sit down in it, for instance in the car

BadBones60 · Today 08:27

Worth going to the factory shop at South Shields if near there to try full range

RaraRachael · Today 08:32

I treated myself to one a few years ago. It hangs in the back room due to the waxy smell.

I rarely wear it as I forget it's there.

Pedallleur · Today 08:33

I have a few courtesy of eBay. All excellent. I used the pile or quilted linings for extra warmth. Had them reproofed by Barbour. Manchester is my nearest store

accidentalaxolotl · Today 08:38

I have the classic green one. I bought the hood to go with it. I really like it for autumn/spring days and I like that it goes well with skirts as well as jeans. The only thing I don't like is that it's not breathable at all.

I also have a longer thigh length navy Barbour raincoat that I used to live in, but it doesn't go with my current wardrobe.

ScottBakula · Today 08:39

Go for it , I have had several over the years one similar to your pick and two full length ones
But like pp said they are not warm so you need something underneath like a decent bodywarmer or fleece.
I sent mine off to be cleaned and rewaxed about once every 2 years .
(They can wiff a bit after a few years of not been washed)
If you send yours off find a reputable place , go to your local tack shop or look in places like Horse & Hound magazine. My DM thought she was doing me a favor and sent my full length one to Johnsons and they dry cleaned it !
I'd recommend getting a tin of wax too so that you can go over areas that get a lot of rubbing like cuffs, elbows and shoulders ( if you use a rucksack)

hobbledyhoy · Today 08:45

They’re very good. I got a big puffa style jacket that cost £200, made my eyes water a bit but I’ve had it on so much it equates to buttons per wear. It’s like wearing a duvet and I’m never out the thing from October to March (Scotland)

Do try it on though as I often have to size down, depends on the fit you want.

Boopsi · Today 08:46

I have one and love it. Bought it years ago and it still looks great.

Pixietop · Today 08:50

I really only use mine for mucking out and gardening. Modern hiking or a decent outdoor brand is far more comfortable and warm/waterproof for outdoors, but if you really want one just get one. 😉

AngelsWithSilverWings · Today 08:52

I love a Barbour. I've not got that style as I always go for a big warm parka style coat but I have five of them as I buy one every couple of years so that I don't look like I'm wearing the same coat in every photo for 10 years. I usually get one in the sales. They are worth every penny I think. Last year I was tempted by and bought a nice coat in Phase 8 that was very expensive but the quality was not good compared to my Barbours. The zips are the things I notice - the Phase 8 coat was let down by a very cheap zip.
