Anyone got a Barbour?

I have been going round in circles with this for months. I have recently had a significant pay rise and want to continue buying investment pieces of clothing. I have recently came out of an abusive relationship and want to treat myself well.

should I buy a Barbour? I love this one, https://www.barbour.com/gb/icons-tartan-collar-modern-beadnell-waxed-jacket-LWX1582OL71.html?_gl=11mjekn4_upMQ..gs*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjw25fWBhAVEiwAMopNjjuJBIKUwafdXsnpjVZl2Hj7-Ike3RvESbDk6k-590QDQcHSXnxkBoCMUcQAvD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAADtGNrhYTSGU2_0xQyGo4bCUL3A9v

any Barbour fans that would recommend. I have no landrover, dog or tweed cap but I love them 😂

As mentioned up thread - size up! I have a Beadnell in a 14 and I’m a 10/12 on top. It’s so lovely and I love it even more now it’s a bit knackered 😊

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/10/2026 17:27

See how you get on with that one before splashing out. The price isn't cheap but given that you've got the hood too, it seems a good price. I'm impressed.

Skates · 09/10/2026 18:27

Oh yes. Absolutely love mine. Warm and gets better as it ages

Have one - in fact was my father's from before I was born so over 50 yrs old! It's been rewaxed lots, repaired by harbour and looks (to be frank) a bit like something a tramp has discarded, BUT its waterproof, windproof and means a lot. Get one - they're great! (But I'd definitely choose a classic as they do go on for ages!)

I have a wax Barbour that I really like but it smells foosty and desperately needs rewaxed so I haven’t worn it in a while! I must send it off soon.

I have my eye on a quilted one and was wondering how warm they? I’m not sure if it would be warm enough for winter here.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/10/2026 22:16

@ThreeTealTurtles , buy a tin of wax. Buy Thornproof Dressing for GBP 14.95 | BARBOUR_GB

I’d rather send mine to them to be cleaned and re-waxed since the jacket is about 15 years old and has never had it done! For future re-waxes I might think about doing it myself though.

Caplin · 09/10/2026 23:44

I got a non waxed but classic black Barbour on Vinted and love it.

The waxed do need topped up, but TBH the non waxed one has also been great. I live is Scotland and it is warm enough. I wanted to see if it was worth it before stumping up, got mine almost new for £80. Can highly recommend preloved, they go great guns in the vintage shops of Notting Hill….

Nylonflares · 10/10/2026 05:18

I have the long green Alexa Chung one and it’s brilliant: totally rainproof and wind proof. I never buy expensive clothes. But haven’t regretted it for a minute. It has a hood

I then bought the Alexa Chung cream raincoat which is smart for work but also waterproof

I’d go for it!

Neuronimo · 10/10/2026 05:43

I'd love a classic waxed barbour. I have the international quilted jacket, which I live in in the winter. It's the best warm and light coat I have managed to find. It is quite flattering too beacause it's belted.

NoodleHorses · 10/10/2026 09:04

I have a couple of Barbours. One since the early 90s, tatty as anything now but warm and waterproof. I have a Barbour quilted jacket too, it’s very warm and cosy.
If you want one, buy one as I doubt that you will regret it.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 10/10/2026 09:32

I got one of the classic jackets for my 18th birthday. The first thing I wore it for was a week of lambing, and it was my primary coat for the next 20 years. It doesn’t smell of BO (or sheep). If you wash, wear deodorant, and air it properly then there's no reason why it should. I really should send it off for rewaxing and repair because I did get behind on the maintenence and it has a few small tears.

I bought myself one of the long ones for my 50th, and it gets a lot of compliments. Keeps my legs dry better than the short one. Heavy, though.

A friend of mine inherited her grandfather's, when it was over 70 years old and very battered. The repair service did a great job.

AllaMova · 10/10/2026 13:09

You can’t go wrong with a Barbour Beadnell. I have it in navy, which I’ve had for five years.

My only gripe was that I had to purchase the hood separately. At that price, it should have came with one anyway imo!

I love mine, although, it’s a long padded one, not a waxed coat. I’ve had it for years and it washes well on a cool wash.

Cyclingmummy1 · 10/10/2026 14:03

Note to self: leave school early one evening this week and go to the factory shop on the way home. I've a hankering for a longline waterproof.

Ohthedaffodils · 10/10/2026 14:14

I treated dh and myself to Barbours when I came out of retirement during Covid to give vaccines.
Cant wear mine anymore though because I’ve gone from a size 16 to a size 10 and it looks like I’ve raised the grown ups dressing up box.
DH still wears his and loves it.

Tightglassslippers · 10/10/2026 14:18

I have a heavyweight quilted version which I bought in nearly new condition for £80 on Vinted. It’s amazing and I love it. It’s what I wear most days in the winter unless I need to look a little more put together. Husband has a vintage one which is a touch stinky, but also great and I generally steal that at this time of year when my thick one will be too warm. I love the tartan on the one you’ve chosen!

Me and DH invested in one of these each a few years ago (me blue, him green). Eye-wateringly expensive but lovely to wear every autrumn/winter and spring. Good investment. Make sure it is waterproof! Also, you can send it away to get rewaterproofed if necessary.

OCTOBER8 · 10/10/2026 18:48

I have 4 Barbours including the one you were thinking of getting. It's a lovely coat but aren't very warm, if you want warmth go for a padded one. Side note you have to wax regularly to keep them waterproof.

Duncantoldme2 · 10/10/2026 19:23

Yes me. Too heavy and it smells.

CherryKerry · 10/10/2026 19:30

I can't get on with them, they always smell funny to me.

PigletJohn · 10/10/2026 22:16

I really don't like a hood. You can get a waxed downbrim hat for rainy days.

Roll it up or fold it into the poachers pocket.
