Anyone got a Barbour?

I have been going round in circles with this for months. I have recently had a significant pay rise and want to continue buying investment pieces of clothing. I have recently came out of an abusive relationship and want to treat myself well.

should I buy a Barbour? I love this one, https://www.barbour.com/gb/icons-tartan-collar-modern-beadnell-waxed-jacket-LWX1582OL71.html?_gl=11mjekn4_upMQ..gs*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjw25fWBhAVEiwAMopNjjuJBIKUwafdXsnpjVZl2Hj7-Ike3RvESbDk6k-590QDQcHSXnxkBoCMUcQAvD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAADtGNrhYTSGU2_0xQyGo4bCUL3A9v

any Barbour fans that would recommend. I have no landrover, dog or tweed cap but I love them 😂

If you love it get it. However Barbour is no longer the old Barbour but has been bought by a Chinese company that makes low quality versions of classic styles.
The boots fall apart in weeks. It’s like Doc Martens. Very sad.

I don't think it has.

Merida46 · 08/10/2026 22:10

I bought a waxed one with a hood because a friend had owned one for years only to discover that it isn't fully waterproof! It is quite warm in cold weather so I kept it,
I ended up buying THIS ONE which is fully waterproof and doesn't need rewaxing. It is really warm and great on a cold and rainy day

@Debtfreeme I've only got a puffer Barbour so not the same thing, but I love it. Also very discreet branding unlike some.

One thing I will say is that their sizing is all over the place. If you order online you might need to try three times. I'm near a John Lewis and sometimes try on a jacket or two, and sometimes a 10 will fit, sometimes a 16. Same thing at nearby Bicester Village outlet.

zigazigaaaing · 08/10/2026 22:29

Have one and love it- it’s a timeless classic

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 08/10/2026 22:30

The waxed Beadnell is a classic. Mine is at least 10 years old and it’s in pretty good condition. I’ve just rewaxed it. I don’t think it comes up big but a zip up raincoat I have is definitely big.

TheBookShelf · 08/10/2026 22:32

Lovely thread which has reminded me to look out my ancient 1989 Bedale Barbour which has been 'resting' in recent years. Think I will revive it this year for autumn walks. It is authentically battered, reproofed and mended by me many times, I just stitch any rips with boot thread and rewax over the stitches. It has no hood but I have a vintage Barbour waxed hat to go with it.

I also have a non-waxed navy blue fabric Barbour which has a warm fleecy lining and a hood, about ten years old. Very warm indeed and is my go to for winter walks.

Calliopespa · 08/10/2026 22:56

Yes, they are great.

Kind of a weird, acquired taste though. I've had them since I was very young, and, as people say, they are not super warm, nor cosy when you first put them on. But with a cashmere jumper beneath, they somehow warm with your body and mould to it, so they stop feeling bulky and awkward after about 20 minutes and feel like a seal skin!

Perhaps because I've always had them, I am less of a fan of the "fashion" Barbours, and stick to the classic outdoorsy ones. Yours is quite a classic design but the collar would traditionally be cord not tartan. have to say the cord wears down to be cosy.

I have a quilted barbour and I don't know anyone equine/agricultural that still wears a wax jacket - there's far better fabrics out there now for working in. They were great in the 80's when they replaced the rubber mackintosh alternative, but ridgeline and equidry etc are washable and less stinky. Will be great for dog walking and other 'clean' activities when it's not too cold or wet. I have just had a poke around their site and the prices are crazy and I had no idea that there was so many styles, it makes my quilted lidderdale bought for £6 on vinted last year seem an even better bargain!

You can still buy cheap wax jackets - Ryedale have them from £35 - maybe buy one of those first to see if you like the feel/smell of the fabric before investing.

Am struggling after reading this thread to see the advantages of getting a Barbour over a cheaper wax jacket…what an I missing?

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 23:24

The point?

Starbright102 · 08/10/2026 23:27

Iv got a barbour. Please can someone help, its similar style to this not sure what exactly the model is, its got a lot of metal poppers at the side and back etc where the jacket is fitted to offer more movement etc. Am I meant to have these popped shut? Iv got them unpopped at the moment and any time i wear it, it sounds like im jingling along the pavement as the poppers bounce off each other

Pop them shut or try wearing a coat designed for wearing in a non-rural environment.

This thread has just saved me money. All I'm hearing is no hood, not warm, having to send off to rewax or do it youself, smell and only showerproof. They look great though .But so does my Didrikson.

They're very waterproof if you keep up with waxing and they have hoods but they're fully detachable and you have to buy them separately. Imo the only issue is the lack of breathability which means they end up smelling of bo because you can't wash them.

This isn't true. Barbour is still firmly in the hands of the Barbour family - current incumbent Dame Margaret Barbour. Next up when she croaks, Barbour is rather like the Crown is Helen Barbour, current VC.

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 21:48

Barbour hasn't been bought by a Chinese company.
The boots are made in China and Vietnam.

I agree about DMs. I wear Solovairs, Made in Northamptonshire.

Edited

Dubarry boots are now no longer stitched too and there are lots of reports of them falling apart.

Any footwear made in Northants gets my vote! I have a friend who lives in Rushden opposite the old Grenson factory, now converted into apartments. That's one yuppie conversion I wouldn't mind living in 😉

LeedsLoiner · 09/10/2026 10:36

I bought my first Barbour at 19. In the subsequent forty odd years I’ve only bought one more. They’re indestructible as long as you keep it well waxed and hang it so the air can circulate around it.
Am currently on the lookout for a vintage Durham lightweight though.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/10/2026 11:02

@LGBirmingham ,they don't end up smelling of BO. Yours might have but you were wearing the wrong coat.

I used to go running in a pac-a-mac and that got stinky. Not the coat's fault.

Orangeleavesredleavesyellowleaves · 09/10/2026 11:23

I have a total of 5 barbours from waxed (Newmarket) to 3 quilted and a barbour international shorter belted jacket. I love my waxed coat ( maybe about 25 years old now?) Sadly it no longer will erm, zip up! But it's in great condition but yes keeps to wind out but you need a gilet underneath or just a jumperfor winter warmth, mines totally waterproof . The other jackets are really old but still in excellent condition.

As in happens I went into the Jarrow shop/factory shop to look for a replacement just this week. Nothing I mean nothing was as good as it used to be made as far as the waxed jackets, only one odd style in the factory outlet area, unlike before when there were loads to choose from, and most 30% off for some truly hideous coats and jackets.

Other half bought a full price gilet which is going back as I found same one on-line for a third cheaper from a farming supplier.

As far as stuff made in China goes there was quite a lot of clothing made there, as well as the wellies but I do like a lot of the shoes especially long leather boots that are made in Portugal. But the waxed jackets are still made at the Simonside factory.

So no new waxed barbers jacket for me, so I will be looking for an alternative. Think when they started to go 'fashionable' with collaborations things started to change, I even have a Emma Bridgewater spotty shirt (a gift) what's that got go do with mugs!

Orangeleavesredleavesyellowleaves · 09/10/2026 11:24

Sorry for typos!

HorrorPudding · 09/10/2026 14:54

I have two Barbours both over 15 years old. If you do buy one @Debtfreeme keep on top of the need to re-wax as once the fabric has lost its wax it rips like tissue paper in creases such as the inside of the elbow or under the arms. I re-wax mine myself armed with old cloths and a hairdryer.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/10/2026 15:12

I do mine outside on a baking hot summer's day.

Rubydobydo · 09/10/2026 15:48

Real country people doing real country things no longer wear Barbour. They leak and take ages to dry out if they get wet inside.
Try Ridgeline or Jack Pyke for the more reasonably priced, or Schoffel - or there many others.

Debtfreeme · 09/10/2026 17:11

I think I got a cracker on Vinted. I was going to go and try some on today but couldn’t get there. I love this one and think it was a bargain, I’m going to rewax it.

I may also get a shorter one I have nearly £300 in my liberty pot so also thinking about a shorter classic one. Thank you for the Barbour love and I send a picture with me in it!!

Barbour woman’s | Vinted

Barbour woman’s - I love this coat but sadly does not fit me anymore . I would say fits a uk 10/12 . Burleigh vintage wax Barbour . Perfect for country and dog walks . Waxed cotton . Couple of minor flaws on lower arm at the back , not noticeable when...
