Anyone got a Barbour?

I have been going round in circles with this for months. I have recently had a significant pay rise and want to continue buying investment pieces of clothing. I have recently came out of an abusive relationship and want to treat myself well.

should I buy a Barbour? I love this one, https://www.barbour.com/gb/icons-tartan-collar-modern-beadnell-waxed-jacket-LWX1582OL71.html?_gl=11mjekn4_upMQ..gs*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjw25fWBhAVEiwAMopNjjuJBIKUwafdXsnpjVZl2Hj7-Ike3RvESbDk6k-590QDQcHSXnxkBoCMUcQAvD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAADtGNrhYTSGU2_0xQyGo4bCUL3A9v

any Barbour fans that would recommend. I have no landrover, dog or tweed cap but I love them 😂

Classic wax for dog walking - 15 years old and in need of a rewax now which I’ll do - it will go another 15 years as long as I can still fit into it!

I have one and love it, can’t imagine parting with it but I will be honest, for me it’s an incredibly impractical coat! I live in Scotland so useless for warmth, no hood and it rains constantly here, I don’t find it particularly comfortable, they’re quite stiff. I wear more when I’m looking for that “look” not because it’s a really great coat! Nonetheless it makes me happy even if I’m cold wet and uncomfortable.

Erm, so why did you buy it?
I live in North Wales and my Barbour is not at all impractical. I should know, I've been wearing it - the same coat - for 49 years.

I have a black one ive had for 20 odd years. Love it.

I’ve got my dad’s old wax jacket, fucking love it. Get it re proofed every other year.

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 15:11

@RedBinToday , similar here. Brought up around the same time on a farm. Pretty much the coat all farmers wore and referred to as a barbour. The coats worn were bedale or beaufort or similar styles, bought from the agricultural store in the nearest market town.

A 'barbour' made by Burberry was not a good idea and neither was a cheap 'barbour'.

They became popular with Yuppies and they were 'wrong' because they didn't look like they'd seen any countryside.

The Beadnell doesn't suit me. I don't wear my coats open and I look a bit matronly in it.

Barbour 'fashion' clothes doesn't appeal to me. Their footwear is comfortable.

@Strangesally20 , get the right hood for the coat and either invest in a liner or wear a fleece underneath it.
I've worn one since I was a teenager and living in a rainy part of the country.

Because I liked it. Clothes don’t always have to be practical, they can just make you happy. I have plenty of less attractive practical warm puffer coats. I was just pointing out that I think they are really lovely but if you’re looking for warm and comfort in a coat this might not be it.

PigletJohn · 08/10/2026 15:15

But if you haven't got a dog, or a horse, what will it smell of?

You ought to drag it behind your car on a rope, down some muddy lanes, to make it look lived in.

John Barbour was a native of Galloway!

I lived in northern Scotland for years and am still there half the time and everyone wears Barbour - I don't know if it's changed but as a company their best retail sales always used to be in Scotland. You just need a base layer. You can buy the hoods separately and they attach with strong press studs, so that might help you get more use out of yours 🙂

It smells of Barbour.

Just wear it in the car a bit, rub it with an old sack, crumple it up, rub it with an old sack, and borrow a dog to sleep on it.

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 15:22

I didn't keep the Beadnell. I looked more Camilla PB than Alexa Cheung in it.

Ive got a navy one and agree with others, I love the look of it and ive had it for years but it would not be my chice of the perfect jacket as its not warm or waterproof or even hooded. However here in Cornwall its ok to have all the jackets because we have all the weather and they never go out of style so you will eventually get your wear out of it.

I had a second home in Cornwall (I know) for a decade and spent half my time there avoiding Cornish rain in my Barbour - how is yours not waterproof? The rain literally beads off the wax...(as I said upthread you buy the hoods separately, they're worth investing in 🙂)

Boobyslims · 08/10/2026 15:24

Get it! I have a Barbour wax jacket and I just love it. Congratulations! Get the jacket 😍

Petitchouchou · 08/10/2026 15:31

I have just counted the Barbours hanging up at home and there are 5 waxed ones, and one quilted effort, a couple are pretty ancient and smelly, but still get worn.

There’s three Bedales, two of which belong to my husband (one in relatively good nick for ‘smart’, and the other for garden and dogs), the other one is mine, and two Beadnells which were my Mum’s. They last forever, and there’s something oddly comforting in the weight of them and the way they shape to your body over the years.

As PPs say, it’s best to size up in the Beadnells, they are quite fitted, and whilst they are brilliantly windproof, they’re not particularly warm.

Yep - all the farmers wore Barbour, retrieved from the floor back of an old-style Landrover where it had been lobbed over a working sheepdog 😆

I remember the yuppies getting into them - lawyers and financiers from Leeds who bought the loft-style apartments in the converted mills in the villages and used to stride around in a generic 'wax jacket' at the weekends which made us locals smile 😀

I have just bought a Barbour skirt - a long dark navy kilt with leather straps that is beautiful. I'll suffer the dry cleaning bill as I loved the fit of it so much. But generally their fashion is just that isn't it.

I've also just bought their waxed cotton headscarf. When I get caught out in rain in central London I'm going to look something like the late Queen 😉

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 08/10/2026 15:37

I dug a waxed jacket back out recently. God, I’d forgotten the smell of them. Wouldn’t have wanted to wear it or hang it next to anything else. There are better fabrics these days.

ChocolateBiscuitsandaCuppa · 08/10/2026 15:38

Husband has three (one inherited from his dad; used to be his dog-walking jacket) and loves them. I borrow the dog-walking one sometimes and it's lined, and I thought fairly warm (and I'm wimp with the cold).

I'm unlikely to need a new coat in the near future, but would definitely consider a Barbour for myself when I do; and I've spent most of my life thinking they were not for me.

BeWildPearlFish · 08/10/2026 15:39

Love a Barbour. I have a short quilted one and actually just brought it out this week as it's so warm, and smart enough to wear to work. I also have a longer length bekted quilted one which is dressier (it's my funeral coat)

LGBirmingham · 08/10/2026 15:48

I had one for a few years. They do look good, a design classic imo. But there are some major disadvantages. They are really sweaty, really really sweaty so they invariably end up very smelly and you can't wash them. You also really need to keep up with the topping up the wax otherwise they quickly begin to let water and tear very easily.

A big positive though is that you can send them off to be repaired, though it's expensive, so they have the potential to last decades.

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 15:48

@RedBinToday , I love a kilt too. I'm a bit for the authentic article. A gansey or aran needs to be the real thing etc. This Buy Arlene Checked Waxed Jacket for GBP 279.00 | BARBOUR_GB is just wrong.

Yes to the floor of the Land Rover over the dog. I think you are a Yorkshire version of me.

Rosepinks · 08/10/2026 15:51

I have a Bedale Barbour from 1999, still perfect. I forgot about it. Just tried it on. I wore it through all my pregnancies and it was very comfortable. Still looks good.

Go for it OP. My husband has one of a similar age. He wears it over a suit to funerals mostly now.

They look very smart.

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 15:54

@LGBirmingham , I don't find mine sweaty and I reproof mine every couple of years, might do a touch up in between. It's not a big job unless it's in desperate need of reproofing.

I had mine for around 5-7 years and was worn most days from autumn through to spring. I did a lot public transport commuting and frequently ran for connections. It was just not breathable at all. I guess if you just use it for a leisurely walk you wouldn't find it a problem.

Also regarding re-waxing I guess it depends how much it's used. Mine probably could have done with a re-wax every 9 months to a year but I'm disorganised so didn't manage that and it tore in places where the wax had worn out. But nonetheless I did have it quite a long time and it got a lot of wear.

I think they look great though.

StylishAndBeautiful · 08/10/2026 16:13

@LGBirmingham , I don't think they were designed for commuting. The dressing rubs off on the seats. Mine get worn for walks into town and the like - it's a semi-rural route and flat, and I'd be doing a fairly leisurely pace.
