Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

Do not, on pain of death, put the non serrated (my very good) knives in the dishwasher. They're from my days as a chef and I keep them razor sharp. I'm also the only one allowed to sharpen them. No points for guess how the death will be delivered.

Everything else that fits is fair game

Rebelliousfinch · 06/10/2026 21:49

No shouting or trying to start a conversation from another room. Go and find the person you’re yelling for. It wouldn’t be acceptable at work or school so why do it at home.

plantladeeee · 06/10/2026 21:49

We have illegal bowls that don’t die in the dishwasher nicely so if you have the audacity to use it you have to manually wash it up after

No music in our house. I find music irritating.

So you impose it on everyone else you live with?!

I have a relative like this who doesn’t allow music in the car… makes long car journeys really dull 😢

I hate this as well.

godmum56 · 06/10/2026 21:55

That nothing in the loft thing.....mine was tidy but pretty full but a few of years ago I decided that my knees were liking the loft ladder less and less so bit by bit I emptied it. Fasr forward to last summer and a squirrel got in there. Lovely pest man said how lovely to see an empty loft because of how much easier it made his job. Happy ending was that the sensible squirrel decamped so no corpse and the hole is now blocked.

girlwhowearsglasses · 06/10/2026 21:57

Various people have given us various bits of crystal glassware (inherited, not wanted). I wouldn’t go and buy it but it’s quite nice in candlelight if you want to feel poncy.

You can never put it in the dishwasher, but more than that: My rule is that if you’ve drunk wine from a crystal glass you don’t have to wash up that night. Crystal glasses must be washed the next morning while sober.

I learnt the hard way

whymadam · 06/10/2026 21:58

With you on the loft thing. Ours is utterly empty.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/10/2026 21:59

Fish cannot be fried - it either has to be oven baked or on air fryer or something similar - I love fish but cannot stand the smell in my kitchen

As someone who has recently cleared a loft during a house clearance, I say THANK YOU.

lofts are junk graveyards designed to sap the very existence out of any poor bugger who has to clear them. And it’s rarely the owner.

I filled a 6 yard skip and it was both frustrating and heartbreaking.

do not store shit in your lofts people

So true. I absolutely nag my adult kids to remove their shit from this house.

SantiagoShaming · 06/10/2026 22:00

No shoes in the house.
Whoever uses the last of the loo roll replaces it.
No prep knives in the dishwasher.
No food in the bedroom.

I wanted a no outside clothes on the bed rule, which I had when I lived alone, but DP refused.

Bunito · 06/10/2026 21:02

Nipples being used for feeding purposes are obviously allowed, but my male offspring have to keep theirs covered.

Similar here but it’s more about the hairy armpits so no vests either. T-shirts acceptable

No washing at the weekend - like clothes washing. I work from home, I put a wash on a couple of days a week (there’s only two of us) and then husband who doesn’t work from home thinks we should be doing that kind of thing; washing, hanging it out, dragging it back in. Listen - I did that during the week when you didnt see it happen - weekends are not wash days.

What if it’s raining in the week and sunny on the weekend🤔

shellyleppard · 06/10/2026 22:02

No hairbrushes or new shoes on the dining room table....my mum's hard and fast rule I have carried on 😁

lissie123 · 06/10/2026 22:04

No electronic devices at the diner table.
Shoes off in the house.

Nothing in our loft cos we physically can’t manoeuvre anything into it it’s too small.

And Asbsoluty No poos in the en-suite bathroom loo. Valid reasons involving calcified poos from the previous occupants which had been stuck in the pipes for so long they had calcified. We had several plumbers tackle that particular problem at great cost when we moved in last year. This is probably TMI.

I have hearing loss and wear hearing aids. I tell people I won’t hear you unless you face me and stand within a few feet of me, but they still wonder why I’m ignoring them if they yell from another room!

I agree about lofts. Our loft doesn’t even have a ladder fitted as I wanted to discourage it from being used. The garage is fairly full of stuff but we have shelves fitted and clear storage boxes to find things quickly.

shhblackbag · 06/10/2026 22:05

No food in the bedroom. No TV in there.

And shoes off. I grew up with that rule.

whymadam · 06/10/2026 22:06

Where do your Christmas decs and suitcases go?

My (possibly weird to some) rule when our kids were small was sit down wees only. Sadly, I’d be a bit odd if I asked guests to do it, but judging by the pissy splashes visiting men leave, I’d love to.

I so anti central ceiling lights, I made my husband remove every single one when we moved in. Also, no curtains that can be drawn. Hate the look of drawn curtains.

In cupboards. And if there isn't enough room, throw some sh*t out.
I hanker after a sitting down only rule for weeing adults!
Hate ceiling lights too but NO open curtains after dark for me. The bogeyman can see right in!

Shodan · 06/10/2026 22:07

When XH and I were still together and both my sons were still at home I imposed the 'You may only ask a maximum of 3 questions before Mum has had her first cup of tea' rule. I was driven quite demented with (to me ) stupid questions before I'd even woken up properly.

Now that it's just me and DP I had to rescind the rule- that man wakes up talking but at least he doesn't ask questions.

And ds2 have a rule between us- I'm not allowed to whistle in front of him and he's not allowed to crack his knuckles in front of me. If either of us forget, the other starts with their 'thing'.

tiptoptoemaytoe · 06/10/2026 22:09

Food to be eaten in the dining room only.

Siriusmuggle · 06/10/2026 22:10

Not me, my late grandmother. Nobody was allowed to go upstairs during the day. To this day I have no idea why.

imonthehunt · 06/10/2026 22:10

No shoes in the house. I don’t impose it on guests but I do think it’s rude when they step on my cream carpet with shoes on when mine came off at the door. Definitely no big light. Internal downstairs doors always closed before I go to bed.

All that’s in my loft are suitcases, Christmas and Halloween decorations. I don’t know why you wouldn’t store those in the loft.

100% agree.

shhblackbag · 06/10/2026 22:11

If I haven't used something for a year, e.g. it's in the storage room for a year, it has to go. I've moved several times. I'm done moving shit around that I never use.
