Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

No shoes in the house...but when having people over we don't know well we won't tell them unless they are observant and see that we are not wearing shoes- and we provide slippers. Also no running jumping or screaming- we live in an appartment (OK this is for the kids- have yet to tell an adult not to do this)

Are these shared slippers worn by others 🤮🤮

😂 No they are discarded afterwards. DH gets them for free in hotels.

Ribena is banned. When she was 4 DD spilled a whole bottle on cream floor tiles/units. She's 16 now and it's still banned.

If you're making a drink/snack for yourself you ask if anyone else wants one.

No one leaves the house without a kiss from me. Like leaving to go to school/work, not just putting the bins out. Only applies to family not workmen or anything like that. I'm not that weird.

Even if you have influenza?

Kill or harm a spider in my house and you will never cross my threshold again.

I wouldn't want to come in in any case - I'm terrified of spiders 😱

yeah or norovirus 🤮

momager22 · 11/10/2026 21:52

No big lights on is my rule. I can’t bear them.

Yes, when I'm particularly poorly or infectious I make sure I lick them before they leave. 🙄

My ex husband lives back in his very remote mountain village in SE Asia. The (adult) kids and I visit regularly or separately.
if I am not going to be there. There are 2 hard and fast rules.

  1. Do not get involved in ANY of daddy’s crazy schemes.:
  2. Do not drink anything offered to you from a petrol can. (Moonshine)

Sadly they don’t always heed this warning. It rarely ends well ….

BMW58 · 12/10/2026 10:40

For the past 18 months every time I've left the house I've taken something out of it to give to a Charity shop or throw away.

LOVE decluttering! So freeing!

That's not really a "weird" rule. Lots of homes are "shoe free".

LizardLadyAsh · 12/10/2026 16:12

That's interesting - personally I'd love a loft for extra storage. I think the key is to put shelves up and a floor to make the storage space organised so that it is useful but not get crazily cluttered. Suitcases and Christmas decorations are things that immediately come to mind for a good use of loft storage space.

Outdoor shoes not allowed indoors and no over filling the kettle

I love music on too, very happy and soothing.
One of the great things is that if it annoys anyone you can put the earphones on, listen to what you want and the volume you want so everyone is happy.

I missed the no music rule! 😱 Absolutely not. I bought a radio/CD player last year so I can actually use my CDs (some I've had for 22 years, some I bought this year.) I absolutely love music.

@FieldofMusic Agree with you. Joyless is the word. I love singing to DS, whenever I hear Enjoy The Silence (whether Depeche Mode or Lacuna Coil's cover of it) I have to sing that to him especially.

Yes to the kettle!

Drives me crazy- especially as DH is so conscious about wasting electricity when it comes to phone chargers.

I love music too .....but also at times feel like silence is golden. I'm v v introverted so find too much noise over stimulating at times. That said, a tune can change my mood entirely and/or take me back in time #nostalgia

We need this. My teenage son is delighted with his new muscle bound body but honestly I don’t need to see it - especially at tea.

The new rule is in!! No nipples at the table! Although DS did go and put parcel tape over the offending area - but he had to get it off so ha ha ha

momtoboys · 15/10/2026 13:53

Not that this has ever needed to be a rule per se, but when my sons were young I did find myself having to say "please take your penis off the dining table!" 😂

No bags ever on the kitchen table or work surfaces. Not shopping bags and especially not handbags. They might have just been on the floor in a public place - supermarket/shop, public toilet… my late in-laws used to do this whenever they visited and I had to remind them not to do it every time.
Also, the living room door must be kept closed so the cats can’t have unsupervised access - especially when it’s Cheistmas.
if you the last of the loo roll you must replace it with a new roll from the box.

Yes ! So glad to see someone else who won't allow bags to be put anywhere food might go. Why would anyone do that ?

Ermmm…there’s something called soap/antibacterial spray?

Yes but why not just keep hnadbags off the food surface ?

handbags maybe, but we unload the shopping bags from the worktop/table as it’s easy and the right height. Then spray it down afterwards.

Whatever works for you. I'm very conscious of bugs at the moment but even before I got poorly I never put things that have been on the ground up on a food surface. My mum was a nurse and I think that's why it got drilled into me

I would say that’s slightly paranoid, eradicating all bugs is not great for your immune system generally. We are a super healthy household snd my kids played in dirt outside most days. I wash the counters so it’s not a problem. I definitely would have shoes in the house but other than that, stuff gets cleaned. I don’t want to live in a sanitised box, that’s really not healthy.

Very happy for someone I don't know to think me paranoid whilst I think her behaviour is dirty.

I won't reply again. Neither of us is going to change anything.
