Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

DH is not allowed in the kitchen when I am in there. That man is a genius at standing right in the spot where I need to be, so he's now banned unless invited.

You know the famous saying-

Behind every great man, there is the exact cupboard or drawer that his wife needs to get into

CowCat · 06/10/2026 21:17

No music in our house. I find music irritating.

hadtheendoftheteather · 06/10/2026 21:17

We all have our own cutlery, plates and cups. I can’t share with people even family

Either DH is a bigamist or it’s a man thing!

When going to the corner shop, it is law that you have to ask, in an exhausted, hungover voice "Do you want anything from the shop?"
And the other person MUST answer "Cornetto "

ViciousCurrentBun · 06/10/2026 21:24

Ours used to be no swords on the table as the kids loved playing with them.

Handy for when you're planning that special meal of mushroom wellington.

TheBluebird · 06/10/2026 21:27

Oh why didn't I think of the nipples rule when I had teenage boys!
We have no loft. Unfortunately the garage has a loft but it does have a proper staircase to carry the crap up and down.
One of my rules was finish the bottle before opening a new one. DS would never use the last inch of milk or squash.

We also have this, but I do have to threaten to get my nipples out when my son forgets. That does the trick.

😂

Big light in the living room only used in emergencies.

What sort of thing constitutes a Big Light Emergency?

yummyscummymummy01 · 06/10/2026 21:32

Fruit corner yogurts belong to the female members of the family.

pinkpony88 · 06/10/2026 21:36

No chainsaws.
must be the only power tool that DH hasn't got but we don’t have a need for one and I think they are just far too dangerous. He would buy one if I relented though. God knows what for.

SleeplessRoads · 06/10/2026 21:37

My loft is a well organised haven, it has book shelves, a kallax and a chair. It’s not a conversion it is literally just a boarded loft but everything is organised and in its place and we go up there at least once a fortnight. It’s more like another room just for storage though.

The garage, on the other hand, makes me want to weep and is where junk goes to pile up and die.

Ineedanewsofa · 06/10/2026 21:37

We don’t have a loft and since we moved here I’ve become a ruthless declutterer!
Our random house/garden rule - small shovel is for corpses, large shovel is for shit.

I know the answer to this! Dropping a Jaffa cake and not being able to find it!

I’ve raised my teens with this mantra. I don’t ask for a lot, but for the love of god, don’t be a dick.

We've had one since they were little which is...
No Messing!
Seems to cover most scenario's.
Still say it now to them as older teens (on the way out with mates) They know what it means 😉

Swissmeringue · 06/10/2026 21:41

Jesus, our loft is the opposite of that. I recently found DH's national record of achievement up there. He's 48.......

BetterWithPockets · 06/10/2026 21:41

When DD was very little, we had to introduce a rule about not drawing on (or painting) the dog.

BeRoseSloth · 06/10/2026 21:42

Don’t take the last of anything without checking. “I’m having the last banana/crumpet/bag of crisps”. Gives others the chance to say they were banking on it for lunch tomorrow or that they’ve not had any yet.

shuggles · 06/10/2026 21:42

@Sofasmurfing Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

Not entirely odd, as I have noticed that things stored in the attic for 20+ years degrade and become destroyed, which may not have happened if it was stored in the main house.

Partridgewell · 06/10/2026 21:42

My DH has a rule (passed down from his Dad) that there is no singing at the dinner table. This has always annoyed me and is not a rule I grew up with but I've just read that someone bans music of any kind in their house so I now realise it could be much, much worse.

What are poo hands?

Hands that haven’t been washed properly!

Franxi · 06/10/2026 21:44

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/10/2026 20:34

Hand towel straight into laundry basket after poo hands.

How often are you clearing up poo with your bare hands to make this a rule?!!

I entirely agree with you. It is only weird in the sense that most people aren't as logical and practical as you.

Hmm.. no weird rules, I don't think. I prefer men sit down to urinate in my bathroom but not like I can enforce it!

Should be the norm anyway, because they're not outdoors so stop getting splashback on your/my floors!!
