Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

That’s really odd ☺️. Surely that’s what lofts are for? I wouldn’t want the Xmas decorations or camping equipment cluttering up the actual house but each to their own.

Ours is having 2 food waste bins and beware getting them mixed up. One is for our compost heap and one is for the council. DH is very particular and gets upset if good compost material goes in the council food waste (my bad)

What if your dh put something in the loft, what would you say? It's his loft too.
I'm sure we may have weird rules, can't think of any atm.

Topseyt123 · 06/10/2026 19:10

I think that is odd. Lofts are for storage in my book, especially of the "out of sight, out of mind" variety. 😎

I'm not aware I have any weird rules, but my three DDs would doubtless disagree.

My own parents did - they were the only ones allowed to be known by shortenings of their names was one, and our friends would be publicly corrected if they did it, which was cringeworthy.

Also, the car was never to be left parked on the drive. It always had to be put in the garage, which was not used for much other storage.

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 06/10/2026 19:12

I can't think of any for my current household but my student house was my favourite.

If you flush the downstairs loo, please make sure you turn the kitchen tap off on your way past.

We haven’t even opened the loft in our new build in five years so nothing is in there - in the last house so much stuff had been put up there and forgotten about and ended up dirty and damaged , when we moved had to sort it all out and said never again.

My husband tried to introduce not using the cordless hoover on the rug. He said it would break it, it's a hoover!!!

Big light in the living room only used in emergencies.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/10/2026 19:56

Not my house but I vividly remember a small child, when I said "sharing is caring" shouting NO RHYMING at me. His mum looked mortified and said that his rhyming drove her mad so she banned it! Grin

Mymanyellow · 06/10/2026 20:00

No monopoly or Baileys. The last one is only me not allowed it

notthatoldchestnut · 06/10/2026 20:02

As someone who has recently cleared a loft during a house clearance, I say THANK YOU.

lofts are junk graveyards designed to sap the very existence out of any poor bugger who has to clear them. And it’s rarely the owner.

I filled a 6 yard skip and it was both frustrating and heartbreaking.

do not store shit in your lofts people

JanuaryLove · 06/10/2026 20:02

seats are for bums not feets

all feelings are allowed, all behaviours are not

don't make tea in my cup

ClaudeHopper · 06/10/2026 20:06

Where do your Christmas decs and suitcases go?

My (possibly weird to some) rule when our kids were small was sit down wees only. Sadly, I’d be a bit odd if I asked guests to do it, but judging by the pissy splashes visiting men leave, I’d love to.

I so anti central ceiling lights, I made my husband remove every single one when we moved in. Also, no curtains that can be drawn. Hate the look of drawn curtains.

That’s not weird, that’s the law!!

No washing at the weekend - like clothes washing. I work from home, I put a wash on a couple of days a week (there’s only two of us) and then husband who doesn’t work from home thinks we should be doing that kind of thing; washing, hanging it out, dragging it back in. Listen - I did that during the week when you didnt see it happen - weekends are not wash days.

We only have one household rule... don't be a dick. Seems to cover every scenario we've come up against so far.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 06/10/2026 20:08

I do not have any rules in my house, as I live alone, but I liked a MN rule that I saw once: "If you want cakes or biscuits, you make them yourself, and wash up afterwards!" It's one way to encourage slightly healthier eating!

Growing up, we didn't have any hard and serious rules. The most obscure one to outsiders would probably have been, "If it's white, it's wet". My mother painted the house a lot, so inevitably, someone would end up with white gloss paint on them from touching a door/the banister, and the cats and dog generally had a swish of white on their tails, too.

FatLarrysBanned · 06/10/2026 20:09

Ribena is banned. When she was 4 DD spilled a whole bottle on cream floor tiles/units. She's 16 now and it's still banned.

If you're making a drink/snack for yourself you ask if anyone else wants one.

No one leaves the house without a kiss from me. Like leaving to go to school/work, not just putting the bins out. Only applies to family not workmen or anything like that. I'm not that weird.

I’ve raised my teens with this mantra. I don’t ask for a lot, but for the love of god, don’t be a dick.

backformoreofthesame · 06/10/2026 20:09

DH tried to have the loft rule

currently it’s only adult kids leftovers in there so he almost won that one

it’s not daft really

but we are lucky - a new build with therefore loads of storage

Minasama · 06/10/2026 20:10

That is odd but keeps clutter down and less of a fire hazard. Our main rules revolve around keeping the house clean and nice - no food outside the kitchen diner, no shoes indoors, no fingers on walls.

I apply it to dh and I too. The dog gets a pass for cuteness.

SuperGinger · 06/10/2026 20:12

No devices in bedrooms overnight - although not so weird

mondaytosunday · 06/10/2026 20:14

@ClaudeHoppermy in laws have a little note on their loo saying everyone must sit down!! They have nine grandsons so…(but adults are supposed to too).

Takethehuntingquiche · 06/10/2026 20:14

I absolutely hate shoes being worn in the house. I do honestly think sometimes OH & DD put their shoes on specially to walk on the carpets. We put our shoes on to go out then one of them will remember something they need from upstairs or the front room & walk their shoes on the carpet. It drives me insane

I also have a weird thing about only having 1 cooked meal a day. If I have a sandwich for lunch I'll have a cooked dinner & vice versa. Dd1 recently asked me if her memory was correct in thinking I made her a snacky tea if she'd had cooked lunch at school. When I confirmed that she was right she looked so outraged I almost thought she was going to ring the NSPCC!

GreenEyesMillennial · 06/10/2026 20:15

No shoes in the house. That’s my only rule I think?

we do have xmas decorations and suitcases in the loft because we have no space for those in the garage…
