Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

That’s odd very odd.

Oh @plantladeeee please tell me what an illegal bowl that won’t die is. I’m guessing there might be a typo but I’m so intrigued and can’t work it out.

My rule is pictures on walls and photos on surfaces.

Feralfarmmumma · 06/10/2026 22:17

live chickens are not to be brought into the house and especially not smuggled into bedrooms,

MsAmerica · 06/10/2026 22:20

Seems to me that storing in the attic is better than having things needlessly cluttering up the house, forcing people to discard things they want to keep, or paying for outside storage.

TheBabyFatmoss · 06/10/2026 22:20

I love the NO RHYMING one too! When we had a bengal cat who was a prolific hunter we had a Make Sure The Weasel Bucket Is Always In The Utility Room rule.

No maths at the dinner table

No mobiles or books at the dinner table.

No music in our house. I find music irritating.

what?????

Sofasmurfing · 06/10/2026 22:22

Bananas must be fully peeled and the skin discarded in the bin before eating commences.
Equally, apples must be segmented and the core disposed of first.

One Christmas I had to implement 2 rules for the sole benefit of DS who was about 11..No burping in the cupboard (kitchen walk-in one) and no barking in the cheddars (tubs you get of mini cheddars).
He grew up to be fairly normal 😂

seats are for bums not feets

all feelings are allowed, all behaviours are not

don't make tea in my cup

A friend of my mum’s used to say: tables are for glasses, not arses.

Nobody bites into an apple in my presence.

I feel this way about carrots.

PancakePatty · 06/10/2026 22:25

No animals may enter the carpeted area of house, so basically none beyond the kitchen door.
I can’t afford to replace carpets etc destroyed by naughty cat.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 06/10/2026 22:25

@RebelliousfinchAbsolutely. When i was a kid, my mum used to say ‘don’t speak to me through the bloody walls’.

I totally get it now. I won’t have it now either.

HelenaWaiting · 06/10/2026 22:26

Sleeping in the living room is not allowed. If you want to sleep, go to bed, not snorting and drooling on my couch whilst I'm watching tv.

Thisismetooaswell · 06/10/2026 22:26

Sorry I think you're all barking mad

SoThatsTheWayItIs · 06/10/2026 22:26

Totally agree about the loft. We don’t put anything in ours either.

Our (my) house rule is all four residents (me, DH and 2 dc) are not allowed to be all in the kitchen at the same time.

No one else is allowed to use my en-suite (including DH)

Stompythedinosaur · 06/10/2026 22:26

Not so much these days, but when the dc were little we had:

You must be wearing at least knickers if you want to chat with the postman.
No licking the dog.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 06/10/2026 22:26

@DustyWindowsillsI really, really need you to elaborate, please.
I’ve got a feeling that there’s a great anecdote behind it.

MondeoFan · 06/10/2026 22:29

@DollopOfFuni have stuff stored under my bed and on top of kitchen cupboards. I absolutely hate it and think it looks so unsightly I’d love to get rid of it all

No washing at the weekend - like clothes washing. I work from home, I put a wash on a couple of days a week (there’s only two of us) and then husband who doesn’t work from home thinks we should be doing that kind of thing; washing, hanging it out, dragging it back in. Listen - I did that during the week when you didnt see it happen - weekends are not wash days.

Lucky you! However sometimes some washing needs to be done at the weekend for the next week.

RafaFan · 06/10/2026 22:29

No pets upstairs.

That nothing in the loft thing.....mine was tidy but pretty full but a few of years ago I decided that my knees were liking the loft ladder less and less so bit by bit I emptied it. Fasr forward to last summer and a squirrel got in there. Lovely pest man said how lovely to see an empty loft because of how much easier it made his job. Happy ending was that the sensible squirrel decamped so no corpse and the hole is now blocked.

You're so lucky! Years ago I worked in insurance and a squirrel got into someone's house while they were on holiday. The damage she came home to after 2 weeks away was horrendous and the poor woman wasn't insured because squirrels count as vermin which isn't covered (it's all a con!). Anyway off topic, but thank goodness you got it sorted!

No shoes beyond the hallway.
No locks on internal doors.
No food upstairs.
No TV in the bedroom.

My Husband wasn't allowed to 'roam' about his house as a child. Even as an adult he wasn't allowed in his Parents bedroom. 🤷

Sasha07 · 06/10/2026 22:30

I have a beautiful, mostly cream coloured, festive door runner. No one is allowed to step on it unless in socks/indoor slippers or barefoot...

Which is weird as it is a door runner but... I want it to always look nice and clean when the front door is open. I do have a normal, dark coloured, small doormat that is to be stepped on and shoes stepped out of before stepping on to the runner... But yeah.

Living room door has to be shut when the last person downstairs comes up to bed. I don't actually know why, just feels right.

Last one, don't touch my mug, or my reserve mug which is exactly the same but is a back up for if the other ever breaks. Any others are free game but that one is mine and it's still going strong from when I bought it 26 years ago. It's the perfect size, pristine condition and just has a great hand feel.

I love this rule OP! With the exception of a small box of seasonal decorations, because you really do only need those once a year and I don't have space for them in the house proper.

That's all we used to keep in our loft, but since having kids we have started storing the clothes they've outgrown up there until the youngest child has outgrown them, then they get passed on.
