Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

I have this too 😂

Oh my GAWD this reminds me of a thread that concurred the BIG LIGHT was never used! 😂😂😂

Another empty lofter here. We had mice up there about 12 years ago and since then we keep it empty (except for a little bit of rodent bait). The garage, on the other hand, is a complete catastrophe.

Rules here include the dog not being allowed in the livingroom unsupervised, beds made in the morning, the hall console table kept clear of all clutter and the livingroom has to be left tidy at bedtime (throws folded, cushions shaken up, books/magazines put away.) No particular reason (except the dog having form for the occasional carpet dump) - I just like bits of the house to be tidy.

Our rule is “don’t be a dick”.

I’ve only got a small loft but I’ve lived here 8 years and I’ve never looked up there once 😬

No nipples at the table.

We also have this, but I do have to threaten to get my nipples out when my son forgets. That does the trick.

ItsCloudyToday · 06/10/2026 20:48

Only water allowed at meal times. Juice/milk at breakfast but at lunch and evening meal, we all have water from a jug on the table. Kids can have squash at other times but water only with meals.

This is my go-to threat too. DS is 21 now but still sometimes has to be reminded

My childhood best friend had a family /house rule of No books in the bathroom.
Family of 6, both parents teachers, house full of bookcases. But only one loo. So no books allowed

Firstruleofsoupover · 06/10/2026 20:52

Nobody packs their case on an unmade bed
crisps or nuts or frazzles have to go in a bowl

DollopOfFun · 06/10/2026 20:53

I don't have a loft but I do have a few rules for similar reasons.

No storing under beds
No storing on top of wardrobes
No storing on top of cupboards.

thistimelastweek · 06/10/2026 20:53

I am an avid reader. Always have been but I have never ever read a book in the loo.
It's plain uncomfy.

Where do your Christmas decs and suitcases go?

My (possibly weird to some) rule when our kids were small was sit down wees only. Sadly, I’d be a bit odd if I asked guests to do it, but judging by the pissy splashes visiting men leave, I’d love to.

I so anti central ceiling lights, I made my husband remove every single one when we moved in. Also, no curtains that can be drawn. Hate the look of drawn curtains.

I also have a no drawn curtains rule... thought I was the only odd one haha. In my defence we do have outside shutters which get closed every night but I cant stand seeing curtains drawn over the already closed up windows and balcony doors!

If you make any toilet infractions (not flushing/wee on the seat/not changing an empty roll etc.) then you're on dog poo duty.

No nipples at the table.

What about a mum who is breastfeeding? Does she have to hide herself and the baby away?

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 06/10/2026 20:58

All bathroom toiletries back in the shelves..
No shoes or ddogs upstairs..

Nipples being used for feeding purposes are obviously allowed, but my male offspring have to keep theirs covered.

Simonjt · 06/10/2026 21:03

Don’t poo on the floor, especially the kitchen floor, whether you’re a human or pet.

StripedTee · 06/10/2026 21:05

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/10/2026 20:34

Hand towel straight into laundry basket after poo hands.

What are poo hands?

SirJe · 06/10/2026 21:05

Totally empty loft here too, solar panels and can’t store anything anyway unless we build platforms.

I absolutely hate shoes being worn in the house. I do honestly think sometimes OH & DD put their shoes on specially to walk on the carpets. We put our shoes on to go out then one of them will remember something they need from upstairs or the front room & walk their shoes on the carpet. It drives me insane

I also have a weird thing about only having 1 cooked meal a day. If I have a sandwich for lunch I'll have a cooked dinner & vice versa. Dd1 recently asked me if her memory was correct in thinking I made her a snacky tea if she'd had cooked lunch at school. When I confirmed that she was right she looked so outraged I almost thought she was going to ring the NSPCC!

This is how I was brought up and I still do it. I don’t really want two cooked meals a day and I do think this kind of eating habit/routine helps you not put on weight.

Bunnyofhope · 06/10/2026 21:07

Don't go poo in the downstairs loo.

BigBilly · 06/10/2026 21:07

A rule I would like followed is "no starting the new toilet roll until the old one is used." My husband has a strange habit of unravelling the new toilet roll that lives on top of the medicine cabinet in the bathroom waaaay before the old one is done. It drives me batty.

Tangoandcreditcards · 06/10/2026 21:09

No maths at the dinner table

glendabrownlow · 06/10/2026 21:12

DH is not allowed in the kitchen when I am in there. That man is a genius at standing right in the spot where I need to be, so he's now banned unless invited.

Only when you've dropped something small or someone spots a spider

I know I probably sound nitpicky but it doesn’t it depend on the meals? We always have a cooked lunch and dinner but it’s healthy and filled with veg, which seems better to me than a cheese sandwich, crisps and banana!
