Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

Ah I love it when this old favourite thread title comes around again. I find it a mine of information!

In our house there's one chopping board for onions, garlic, spring onions, leeks, shallots, chives. Nothing else can be chopped on there, and all those aforementioned onion variety vegetables must NOT be chopped on any of the other 6 chopping boards.

DH tried to have the loft rule

currently it’s only adult kids leftovers in there so he almost won that one

it’s not daft really

but we are lucky - a new build with therefore loads of storage

I'm 42 and still have crap in my parents' loft that I didn't take when I permanently moved out at 25 because the flat i bought didn't have much storage 😁

SuperGinger · 06/10/2026 20:16

We nicked one from DH's friend when the kids were little, "always present a clean sheet" when wiping your bottom. It resulted in profligate use of loo paper. We still joke about it

Snuppeline · 06/10/2026 20:18

No glitter in the house. None of that bastard stuff shall pass my threshold!

I don’t care that your a greedy so and so but if you take the last of something you throw the evidence (the now empty bag, box or whatever). It is evil to allow others to live in the belief there is biscuits in the house when in fact there are none!

Also, when you take the last of something put it on the shopping list. I don’t appreciate having planned pasta with pesto only to find the teenagers had the pesto to make fancy deli sandwiches. The sandwiches are fine, the messing with my logistics are not. Just tell meeeeee!

EmpressStorm · 06/10/2026 20:19

Only guests can wear shoes in the house, no other rules.

TheBlueKoala · 06/10/2026 20:19

No shoes in the house...but when having people over we don't know well we won't tell them unless they are observant and see that we are not wearing shoes- and we provide slippers. Also no running jumping or screaming- we live in an appartment (OK this is for the kids- have yet to tell an adult not to do this)

Don’t cut cheese on the floor

Absolutely never put bees on your sister or anyone else.

NOTHING alive comes further than the back door without me being told

Gloriousgardener11 · 06/10/2026 20:19

My car has to be put away in the garage if I’m not using it. I have NEVER left it out over night, god forbid!

throwaway3749574 · 06/10/2026 20:20

No singing at the table.

foodlovefood · 06/10/2026 20:22

When DP moved in with me my rule was dinner was always eaten at the kitchen table together if we were eating tea together.

he grew up in a house that no one ate together. When he got to be a teenager he had to make his own dinner. Sitting down to eat was only done as a family. He also didn’t eat out lots.

we met when both early 40s. He was married before but somehow managed to meet someone who never ate as a family.

Food is a social thing to me and I like to eat out. Now he will eat a take away at the table instead of a Saturday night sofa slump. Once I found him drunk after a night out eating his kebab at the table. He says he loves our chats over food.

Bunito · 06/10/2026 20:22

No nipples at the table.

Ducksurprise · 06/10/2026 20:24

There are coffee mugs and tea mugs and they must not be mixed

No one uses my mugs.

theblame · 06/10/2026 20:25

Don’t leave plastic accessible. The cat eats plastic including but not limited to, floss, bank notes, carrier bags, salad bags, parcel wrapping, sellotape, cat litter bags, cling film and any form of shrink wrap

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 06/10/2026 20:26

No feet on seats
No blue food/drink
No using the George the 3rd silver spoons for cough medicine/Calpol.

Not my house but I vividly remember a small child, when I said "sharing is caring" shouting NO RHYMING at me. His mum looked mortified and said that his rhyming drove her mad so she banned it! Grin

OMG I love this one!

Thinkpink21 · 06/10/2026 20:30

My loft is full of stuff that I use! Christmas decorations, suitcases, outgrown kids clothes being saved for younger DC. I love my loft!

You are indeed lucky - our new build was extremely short of storage

Duncantoldme2 · 06/10/2026 20:32

We don't have any rules really. Unless you count the unspoken understanding that the pets can sleep where ever they like, demand whatever they want. and are generally more important than all of us.

I'm totally with you on the loft issue. We don't have an integral loft ladder so getting up there involves carrying the garage ladder upstairs

Your children clearly have an idyllic childhood. Just from those rules!!!

Hand towel straight into laundry basket after poo hands.

You win.
My rule is that no-one ever suggests that Father Christmas isn't real.
My eldest is 40 soon.

FindingMeno · 06/10/2026 20:35

No farting at the dinner table.

@ClaudeHoppermy in laws have a little note on their loo saying everyone must sit down!! They have nine grandsons so…(but adults are supposed to too).

This should be the rule everywhere!
