Well he is an idiot. Without national security the country is screwed. Especially as Labour have pissed off 2 of our most important allies when it comes to keeping us safe.

But Burnham’s immediate problem is the bond market and cost of borrowing. It’s one thing to spout nonsense about spending as the mayor of Manchester - no one cares; it’s quite another to say it as PM at PMQs.

He really is becoming a liability.

It’s odd because the markets will react if the spending goes up. Sometimes I think Healey knows that and has not intention of being any more left on this.

But then who knows. It’s like a game of smoke and mirrors.

Honestly not sure what Healey’s game is.

At least if enemy attacks we can throw at them all those extra cans of soup and beans we have been told to buy just in case of emergency

Im wondering how many military personnel are currently thinking about handing in their papers now they know where they sit in the PMs priorities.

And he was the very best the party could find for the role!

I am moving to the same conclusion, though I’m not there yet and Burnham could reverse my declining view of him.

What mostly disgusts me about Burnham is his grand political dishonesty. Exciting the Labour left with announcements and soundbites that he knows are bullshit is cynical and fraudulent. At least Starmer tried talking some common sense to his backbenchers even if he was too weak to see it through.

But it might just be that Burnham’s keeping the left onside while planning some monetarist and other more sensible policies.

Let’s see what happens to the Burnham vibes when they collide with reality.

I guess the budget is where we’ll know something.

To add I think it’ll be safe and a damp squib generally, with markets as key. But just a guess at this point, could be wrong.

His team are already backtracking his remarks with “What the PM meant was…”. From BBC:

“After PMQs, Burnham's team was at pains to stress his commitment that "national security is the most important duty of any government", and stressed the prime minister had been "consistent about getting the welfare bill down".”

Add to this I’ve just seen about the plans to practice calling up the strategic reserve from next year. That’ll include DH, he left nearly 7 years ago (just before Covid) but he’s on the list for at least 10 years, potentially for life as an ex-officer.

I agree with that. It’s another part of his political fraud. Talk up leftist policies but do nothing about them and hope that the party is too stupid or scared or both to complain about it.

Wondering if he mixed up the line and got it the wrong way round. So bizarre.

When a PM has to get the gofers to clean up after a stupid and damaging statement at PMQs, the most high-profile place of all for announcements, you know the PM has royally fucked up.

This is an example of what I meant about him being a fraud. That primacy of social security nonsense was intended to get cheers from the left; but the reality of its meaning has bitten him and he’s doing a reverse ferret at high speed.

I suppose it’s one up from announcing big policy changes, letting opposition build and then U-turning - at least it is only sound bites being floated and reversed…

Yep, and not for the first time in his short tenure. He says what he needs to say in the moment, then says something completely different to a different audience. He needs adulation.

They're also lowering the threshold for call ups to warlike preparation, and increasing the age limit from 55 to 65. Dh is 52 so we thought he'd only had a few years to go.
