I’m am ex- MOD civil servant and the Army admin is half populated by ex-military. The oldest I know of is 76.
If a regular officer (can be I’d late entry up to mid-50s) then they do have a fitness test, but not a Reservist (what used to be TA) unless willing to deploy or anyone called up on a reserve commitment. Ex soldiers would man gates and so on.

Spent a pleasant afternoon with a high up ex military family. Did you know some ex military are training the Russians I guess you'd call them mercenaries now. Not sure if they will make a difference the Ukrainian people are very inventive themselves.

Re Israel chucking us out. It's concerning that we did (past tense) import 25% of our drugs from Israel which will hit our NHS hard and perhaps cost us more when we have to buy it elsewhere in the world.

Things are about to get worse. I cannot think of anything more socially divisive than this:

Everything is so difficult. I need to order heating oil, but do I pay the high price now, or will it go down?
But otherwise, the binnie’s are now coming every three weeks, none of the verges have been cut nor the hedges properly trimmed for years so roads are narrower and drive a trial - it’s surely not just social care eroding money.
You never know when the postie is turning up that day. We’ve had to buy a Ring doorbell as delivery drivers just dump and run. I’ve been thinking about eating less meat but am married to a carnivore. Now I’m meant to keep a stock of food in case goodness what happens.
Life is becoming shit. Who will rescue us, if it’s ever going to be possible?

Polanski has been selected for the Greens to fight Holborn. I think he’ll get humiliated.

Mind you, it’s a win-win scenario for normal people now: Labour lose, happy days; Polanski sinks like a stone, welcome further damage to the awful Greens; close run thing, they both come out of it badly.

I agree. We are hearing little about it and the affects of implementing it would be profound.

We're not on oil anymore. Son bought an oil run house in march. August I told him buy your oil. He didn't. Now that the houthis have shut the other exit through the red sea, I can only see oil prices rising.

We've also told son get a log burner ordered, buy logs. In other words start planning. They're in shit street this winter now, they'll survive I guess but buying a remote cottage in the country you do need to plan ahead 🙈

Well I've read the Spectator article now. Much of it won't apply to Wales. But the Ofsted bit is pure Welsh trickery. We have Estyn who are so politically biased towards schools in deprived areas. Those schools get glowing reports whereas a school in a more affluent area with middle class kids where both parents work, the kids eat well, parents read to them at bed time every night. Kids go-to brownies, cubs, rugby, football clubs. These schools get covered in red flags by Estyn. It's demoralising for staff and confusing for parents who really are doing their very best.

Can I ask because I grew up in the Shires I don't recall great wealth. There were a few houses set back where famous actors, authors lived we were told, maybe they had money. But everyone I knew and grew up with were very ordinary. All the children went to the same primary school, we played in the same parks, paddled in the same rivers. Cycled in the same country lanes. Is it so different now?

There are at least four of us on this thread in the same boat, so at least we've got each other to moan at if it comes to pass.
You could form a platoon, my sister was a sergeant. Get some officers and probably have a Mumsnet Company.
