it seems the government is reviewing plans for the consolidation of councils and the pointlessness of having new mayors! Seems a bit too good to be true. Wonder what the catch is.

My council, Essex, complained about it directly and it seems we are off the list for having to do this (along with others listed in this link). Apparently, it wasn’t properly costed and it was going to cost Essex upwards of 100 million.

I’m glad if it doesn’t go ahead. Seems a great shame to waste money, i’m convinced that it was only suggested to create more pointless jobs. I had to dig around to find out the reasons but the cost of the restructure does seem to have been a factor as well as the necessity of it. Well, it wasn’t necessary. Certainly couldn’t see any benefits around my way.

They've been accused of Gerrymandering and won't release the supposedly fresh legal advice. Hours and money wasted yet again by our incompetent government.

Ministers have been forced to put controversial plans to shake up local government across swathes of England on ice after being accused of gerrymandering.
Angela Rayner, the local government secretary, confirmed that plans to reorganise Essex, Hampshire, Norfolk and Suffolk into unitary councils have now been withdrawn, while other changes in 14 areas have been suspended. Local elections in these areas will go ahead in May rather than be suspended.
The move followed what ministers said was “updated legal advice” as part of a judicial review process brought by some of the affected councils.

@Nuthatch26 thank you, that’s really interesting. It’s amazing how these people just steam ahead without checking anything. Like law and finance don’t exist.

Gosh yes no matter what’s happened in the polls since they were instrumental in getting Starmer ousted.

You don't really need to worry about little things like your policies actually working when you're in student politics / long term opposition. They just need to sound good.

Labour are finding this a shock, I'm sure.

I often say I feel as if the council must be doing a reasonable job here because I don’t have a reason to think about them very often. When I was living in London, I was constantly having to object to things! It seems like being quiet means they are just getting on with things in the background, which is good.

Don't move here, they'll never be out of your mind. Sefton is an utter shit show! One of the latest controversies is about an aviary (yes, where birds live...you couldn't make it up).

Well my local authorities are using Article 4 Directions to remove permitted development rights that allowed property owners the right to change a residential house to a HMO (3/6 unrelated people) without permission. So now Landlords will need planning permission.

Apparently in a larger village, about 10 miles from me, residents found a HMO being opened on their estate opposite the children’s play area. They were all livid, petitions etc and the windows out through, not good. They were all blaming Burnham.

Probably me being a bit thick, but didn’t Healey in his speech this morning say he was backing devolution to unlock economic growth? So how does this play out? Or have they jumped the gun again?

Does anyone feel there’s any detail? I don’t think he’ll raise income tax - I would place a bet on CGT and yet more private sector growth killers in the same of fairness. Sounds like their economic ‘strategy’ at the moment is to sound safe and boring as mortgage interest rates head north.

i said before - if AB doesn’t acknowledge directly that labour have failed for the last two years they’re already in trouble.
