This Thatcher argument doesn't make sense to me. It ignores the state of the country she inherited and the reason people voted for her.
Also Labour were in power for over a decade between then and now, many of those years Burnham himself was in government.

Wilson and Callaghan dug the hole the UK fell into. I do wish people would read their history.

Yes if they’d wanted to halt RTB and attempt some form of re nationalisation of utilities they had time to do it.

According to someone being interviewed on R4 this morning (I didn't catch her name, but Labour, I think), the problem is the benefits bill - specifically the triple lock; it's unfair and the country can't afford it - boomers, free university, yada, yada...

Not once did she mention the other benefactors of the UK's largesse.

It's such blinkered and malevolent thinking; Reeves demonstrated it when she pulled the WFA. It's obvious the triple lock is unsustainable, but to target it in isolation is inequitable.

It just sounds so out of date. Bond markets are behaving today September 2026 not some 40 years ago. The more it comes up the more it feels like a random bizarre excuse.

It’s just positioning. Burnham knows that the stupider sort of Labour MP (that’s most of them) and the average Labour member or activist is fixated on Thatcher and 40 year old policies like privatisation and right to buy. They’re left wing taboos.

They don’t hate Thatcher because she was bad. They hate her because she had the resolve to take on the left’s ruinous policies and as a consequence to change Labour fundamentally. As a simple example, the binning of Clause IV.

Burnham’s just pulling the strings of a load of sentimental old left wing fools and impressionable shouty students. But he won’t do anything meaningful to turn the clock back as he suggests he will. It’s all a big fraud on his own party, but one he knows they’ll swallow. It’s deeply cynical.

I can see it would be taken and applauded with the PLP and party members. But to every day people current issues are here and now. I agree with your take.

But let's not mention that many of them are where they are thanks to Thatcherism, including Burnham.

Not listening to PMQs but R6 played Kemi’s opener which had people laughing with her, but the question was good. Out of the 120 plus questions and spending requests was there one where he said no?

Is it just me or is Andy Burnham just 'awful' in PM Questions, yet the Times this morning was saying what a good communicator he is .
Burnham just talks out of his 'hat' . The general public must be so politically ignorant if they think Andy Burnham looks anything like a Prime Minister. I am beginning to miss Starmer (no not really but Burnham in a way is talking down to the Populus). The Populus are taken in by him due to his deliberate use of 'Northern' type estuary English. This being quite deliberate since he entered Politics .

I think I have misquoted Estuary English ! I learn something new every day.. What I was trying to say was he has a way of deliberately trying to change his spoken words from 'Cambridge' dictation (his University in to a format he believes makes him the same as his electors. This is not about accent but how he Pronounces words, completely differently to the 1998 Video I posted.

I think he’s probably good on the street and being chatty but the HoC is a different ball game.

I had a meeting so missed PMQs. Will try and watch it tonight. I only caught Labour's Tan Dhesi tearing strips off Burnham and Healey over defence spending. Good on him.

Agreed. I don't want a common man of the people to be PM. I want someone exceptional. Burnham is not it.

Also economic reality has a habit of hitting Labour platitudes.

He can be as friendly as anything but that constant tax and spend pushes up billions in debt servicing.

Starmer has already vacated his seat. So 'decent' that he couldn't even hang around until the by election, and he did it on Burnham's big day.

@Nuthatch26 A “common” (I dislike that word) man of the people could be brilliant. I suspect AB isn’t, but certainly that type of person could be ideal. I’d like one. To be honest, I always think a politician should be someone who’s had to do stuff like get the night bus home from work. And then try and walk through a street that doesn’t have the street lamps lit. Okay, it helps if they’re a woman 😂

I’ve realised I’m putting a lot of conditions on who I’d like to be PM. I’m not that specific in real life!

I hope his ‘international’ job is a big important one. If it turns out to be his own equivalent of Sue Gray’s Envoy to the Nations and Regions ‘role’ he’ll be an even bigger laughing stock.

I don’t mind if it’s insignificant. I’d prefer it tbh as there’s less chance of more exposure.

I'm the opposite I'm afraid. I don't care if they've never had to catch a bus or eaten a jam butty. We're a G7 economy. I want the brightest minds with a proven successful background to run it.
