Don't know about mince pies, but Sainsbury's are already stocking mountains of Quality Street/Roses/Celebrations tins Shock

FFS we haven't even had Hallowe'en yet!

TemperanceWest · 30/08/2026 10:59

The John Lewis online Christmas shop is open. It really should be against the law. 😠

PickAChew · 30/08/2026 11:19

To be fair, when I did a summer job in the late 80s, Newcastle Council were hanging the Christmas lights in early September, so not much has changed.

cardibach · 30/08/2026 11:44

Maybe the chocs are for Trick or Treaters?
Also can’t abide a brioche bun with savoury fillings. Needs butter and jam!
Bars Brith and Welsh Cakes are fab. My mum’s were (as is traditional) the best. She handed the Welsh Cakes recipe down to my niece , with tutorials, when my other niece got married. They made packs of tiny Welsh Cakes as table favours.

I had a toasted bagel with some nice strong cheddar this morning and am just back from a lovely swim off the Hoe.

Notonthestairs · 30/08/2026 12:13

Cant stand brioche. But toasted hot cross bun, kerrygold & raspberry jam is a year round pleasure.

Evenstar · 30/08/2026 12:36

I hope these “patriots” will be facing charges, disgraceful behaviour in a church

I can no longer eat any of these yummy treats because I’ve become dairy and gluten intolerant. 😢

LizzieW1969 · 30/08/2026 12:44

On the positive side, I have been able to lose a lot of weight, so it’s no bad thing really. 🙂

Evenstar · 30/08/2026 13:01

@LizzieW1969 I had to give up gluten and dairy for a couple of years, but I think for me the problem was definitely gluten. I found I could reintroduce dairy again, apparently if you are sensitive to gluten it can damage the gut and sensitise you to other foods and once it heals you may be OK with the other things.
There are some lovely recipe books that accommodate both so you could bake your own. Gluten Free Alice on Facebook is dairy and gluten free and shares recipes and any finds in the shops.

It took me a few years off the gluten but I'm back to being able to manage dairy with the help of some milk aid tablets. My limit was just enough lactofree milk to go on my breakfast, before that. I still need to be careful with histamine, though, which means avoiding most fruit, especially dried fruit, which sets my heart racing as rapidly as fermented condiments like oyster sauce before my guts have a hissy fit.

Aye. So woke!

Willowkins · 30/08/2026 13:47

I've started shopping at Tesco's due to the cream cakes and they have a whole aisle of Christmas food, including Mr Kiplings Festive Bakes which are my favourite (one less packet on the shelf now)

LizzieW1969 · 30/08/2026 13:51

Thank you for your comments, @Evenstar and @PickAChew, and sorry to hear about the food issues you’ve both had, especially not being able to eat much fruit, @PickAChew! I find that fruit mostly makes up for not being able to eat creamy treats.

My issues started with COVID and stem from a hiatus hernia and acid reflux.

LizzieW1969 · 30/08/2026 13:53

Thank you for the baking suggestions, too @Evenstar. 🙂

Cleverly quits the shadow cabinet to run for London mayor

I read that the Reform strategy for dealing with Cleverly is to decide that the whole Chagos island saga is now his fault, rather than Labours.

No, Asda. ‘Tis not the season. There’s a quarter of t(e year yet before Christmas. It will be the season in December. Now fuck off.

FFS we haven't even had Hallowe'en yet!

I’ve just nipped in sainburys on my way home to get a few bits and wanted GF fruit loaf for me (they were out and out of Hot cross buns)

But ….. the lady was stocking the GF Christmas food on the shelf so I may now have 4 GF Christmas cake slices 👀

Llttledrummergirl · 30/08/2026 16:23

Dh is lactose intolerant, and dsil is celiac. Both become very ill if they have even a small amount.

We've found most things can be tweaked to accommodate and it has become easier over the last few years to adapt recipes. Eating out is a nightmare though. I will confess my attempts at making snickers and mars bars have been OK, but they usually end up in the freezer as I can't quite get the caramel right.

Evenstar · 30/08/2026 16:27

@LizzieW1969 I also have other medical issues including a hiatus hernia and acid reflux, so sympathies for yours.

I was tested as coeliac but I’m not.

ai am intolerant to wheat though as I discovered and can now eat Mr Whippy ice cream which use to make me sick when I was still eating wheat!

Back to meteorology ... I think this is the 6th day in a row when thunder has been forecast and we've had some rain. Currently have to have lights on in the house - at 5pm. It's like a winters eve,
