In a similar state of mind - my eldest starts university in September. Thrilled for them but it’s made me feel reflective. A number of family changes this year. I swear time is speeding up.

It really is. It seems a year at most since my grandchild was born! I'm trying really hard to stay in the moment without looking forward or back.

itsgettingweird · 29/08/2026 11:07

It was Apple Music not tv.

But mine started some albums of music!!!

No point paying for anything extra tv subscription wise now as back to work and swimming next Tuesday so I’m out of the house 4.45-7.30 everyday.

I’ll put it on my half term list for if the weather bad!

I enjoyed series one of Slow Horses but couldn’t get into the others - and didn’t feel like I enjoyed the first as much as everyone said I should. As such I’m nervous to try Ted Lasso. I hate it when everyone hypes something. Makes me reluctant to watch and I think makes me hypercritical if I do.
Dolly was a total legend.

A lot of these series do slowly decline and end up a little bit too OTT. Diminishing returns and all that. It's then a question of just enjoying the ride or not.

Personally, once you've realised it's happened you can't unsee it.

Karistyleaftea · 29/08/2026 11:54

Loved the books by Mick Herron. first one being Slough house where we are introduced to the slow horses.
I've heard how brilliant the tv series is so I am currently considering with DH if we should get apple tv.
I really don't like all the subscription services though.
I am the same with nectar, sparks etc etc .

one of the few characters that the more you learn about her, the more extraordinary she shines.

Next thread title suggestion: Be More Dolly.

ds had a months fee trial - we are back on Ted Lasso!

DuncinToffee · 29/08/2026 14:05

After Argentina's behaviour at the World Cup, that comes as no suprise.

I have read suggestions that the UK should start charging the US rent for their airbases.

I don't think bullying the UK will produce the kind of results Trump wants.

Why not ? It's a paradigm of the transactional view Trump has made the US take in the world.

You want our land ? You can pay.

I read ond Slough House book and hated it!

DuncinToffee · 29/08/2026 14:54

I read one of his Zoë Boehm books ages ago and when watching 'down cemetery road' kept wondering why it was all so familiar.

I wasn't too impressed by either.

Yes, read that too. Also unimpressed.

I can see Slow Horses might be good telly though.

Mainly, I need to get a free trail of Disney + so I can watch The Rivals season2!

Notonthestairs · 29/08/2026 15:07

Piggy - Rivals will definitely bring you joy. The second half of season 2 is coming out in November so time your trial carefully.
Would be terrible to only get the first half of Season 2.

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2026 15:37

Yes, good point!

Karistyleaftea · 29/08/2026 16:26

We can agree to differ re Slough house , i am one of those people for whom the book is always better!
Jilly Cooper was an excellent writer .
I love her descriptions of the countryside .

Yes agree with this. Loved reading Rivals.

BestIsWest · 29/08/2026 17:08

Jilly Cooper is one of the greatest ever writers on the English countryside and on gardens. I’m a huge fan. And the TV series is great too.

No shitholes in London, then?

BIWI · 29/08/2026 17:21

The Slough House books are amazing. They are, though, very 'densely' written; Mick Herron is a brilliant writer.

DH and I always wondered who would play Jackson Lamb but could never think of anyone who was quite right. But Gary Oldman is simply superb. The other casting is great too.

Lots and lots of rain here, and it's started tipping it down again just now. Also very windy, which is blowing all my tomato plants over. Feels very autumnal, and I'm worried my tomatoes and chillies are never going to ripen!

Cleverly quits the shadow cabinet to run for London mayor

In 2 years time.

Presumably he’s had to step down from Tory front bench because his messaging for London has to be different from what the party offers nationally!!

Doesn’t indicate a huge amount of trust that Badenoch is going to make the party electable in the next GE.

He would have been Tory leader if he hadn’t got cocky and told his supporters to vote for the weaker candidate (Badenoch).

I don’t think he’s a terrible candidate. Best of the current Tory front bench. Or was.

Agreed. And animals.
I wasn’t sure anyone could do a good job of adapting Rivals and Disney seemed like the wrong forum for it, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. A pleasure to watch.
