'My ADHD brain'

I feel like I am hearing/reading this constantly now. It feels like the new anxiety. Why are people seemingly self-diagnosing themselves with ADHD now?

I work with children with autism and ADHD, so I know a fair bit about this disorder. It can be really difficult to manage for some people and it pisses me off that people I have known for years have suddenly decided that they have it because they did a fucking online quiz. It minimises the issues that some people who have ADHD really have.

A friend, who I have known for years announced last week that her 'ADHD brain' is the reason she forgets her purse every time we meet for lunch. When asked about this sudden diagnosis, she said that she had done a quiz and 'it all makes sense now'. I keep this online too, is it just me noticing this?

Yeah, I think fewer than 1% of the adult female population has been diagnosed with ADHD. I have a diagnosis but a part from people I've met through ADHD meetup groups, I only know 2 or 3 other people in real life who have been diagnosed. And I have one friend who thinks she has it and is awaiting assessment. I'm not seeing anything that could be described as an explosion although there is a lot of content on social media - probably because people are interested in the narrative about exploding diagnoses of a disorder that's not really real or not even that bad as it's being portrayed.

It’s doing my head in @ForDucksSake

The world and his wife seemingly have ADHD now, and it’s the need to announce it at all times that’s so tedious

including things like : My ADHD brain is making my anxious about [insert thing that would make anyone anxious]

We don’t need to hear about it

You don’t want to hear about it because your brain can’t comprehend something it can’t see.

Self-awareness is valuable, but an online quiz is not the same as a professional assessment. Casual self-diagnosis can unintentionally minimise the very real challenges faced by people living with ADHD.

To be fair, the first step in a formal diagnosis is a questionnaire that may as well be an online quiz.
