Haven't caught up on the speech itself yet but in the snippets I've read both things were mentioned, the building of a new economy plus setting out new measures and how to pay for them starting tomorrow. Give the man time to get his mug moved in and a cup of tea in it!

This he has only been PM for a couple of hours give him chance.

Who the hell is PAYING for all of this? Have you seen how much debt this country is in?

Have you see how wealthy the UK is ? Check. It might surprise you.

And I will set out some of those measures starting tomorrow, including how we pay for them.

We will help more young people into work by changing the education system and giving them more support, more mental health support.

And we will build more council homes.

That is the fair and sustainable way to bring the welfare bill down, to meet our fiscal rules, and to honour our commitments on defence to our international partners.

I agree. And we definitely shouldn't fall into the trap of writing someone off on their first day because of one poor speech. We're better than that. We should give Burnham a chance.

Some people don't seem to realise that having large homeless population actually costs a hell of a lot of money and eliminating it would likely be cost effective. In my old job (retail banking branch network support) we spent a hell of a lot dealing with the impact of rough sleepers to the extent it was a factor in some branch closure decisions.

Agree. Whatever our personal views re: Burnham we want Labour to succeed.

Oh, I didn't realise being critical of Andy Burnham meant I hated the Labour Party! How odd.

I imagine Keir Starmer isn't fond of him either-does that mean he must hate the Labour Party too.

I suggest you read my posts on this thread and others about Burnham. I am critical pf him too.

I know what hand on ha'penny means, which is why I commented in the way I did. I thought maybe it meant something else in other places.

yep. Tackling homelessness brings costs down over the longer term.

Every £1 spent on providing decent permanent housing saves £1.28 on having to house people in temporary accommodation.

Furthermore that £1 goes into local employment and supplies rather than a trust fund dividend.

Maths like that should appeal to the critical thinking lite commentator.

Meanwhile, we still have to address how come - "benefits" aside - the rich have got richer and the poor have got poorer since 2019.

MaybeMeansMaybe I don't know how long you have been on MN, but maybe have a look at the history of these threads before having a go. I was just explaining that to pp as I know she is not a supporter of the left.

Not to overstate how little desire people have to have homeless people on their doorstep to the point they pay for spiky paving and seat dividers on benches and shutters over the doorway recesses and awnings on their buildings in order to keep them away. It would be hypocritical not to want to put the same amount of money towards significantly reducing the problem in the first place.

I wanted Cameron (and Clegg) to succeed.

I wanted Theresa May to succeed.

I wanted Boris Johnson to succeed.

I wanted Liz Truss to succeed

I wanted Rishi Sunak to succeed.

I wanted Keir Starmer to succeed

I want Andy Burham to succeed.

I would happily be considered a poltroon and a flibbertigibbet for the few remaining years of my time on this awesome planet if any or all of them could succeed so that the hungry are fed, our children are safe, no one wants for shelter and we can look to export happiness, not division.

Very sad to hear that Kevin Keegan has died. Another - and perhaps the rightful- King of the North.

Of course no one is the keeper of threads, it’s just that admittedly this is the first thread with Burnham within the title, they have been running for a very long time sort of evolved from the *Westmindenders Threads” all are welcome just gets a bit wearing when you get posters with totally polar opposite views plopping it’s a little haven for probably more left leaning posters not that many of us if you look at some of the content on MN.
