We’ve seen him do better so I don’t think the criticism is very fair. Incoming PMs never used to have lecterns, Thatcher certainly didn’t, she stood on the left of the door to No 10 and delivered her speech from there. It was very policy light too. As was Blair’s.

Doesn’t make him a clear speaker. I’m not suggesting he’s not clever, or not an able writer. The pauses in that were ridiculous and really impaired communication. I know because I really struggled to follow him. No flow.

Im not bothered about lectern or no lectern really. I don’t think criticising someone whose only sales point was that he was a great communicator for being a not-great communicator is unfair though. What was the point? Starmer is a clearer communicator (in that showing) as well as better at all the technocrat stuff.

I’m baffled that people are saying the speech was hard to follow. Thankyou, we need to do better, rough sleeping is bad, more details to follow. I’m really not sure what people expect.
Hes building a clear, positive narrative. One of Starmer’s issues was he told the truth, bloody hell guys look at the books we’re all fucked. AB is trying to be positive.

I just expected more, given the hype. And I prefer uncomfortable truth to comforting platitudes.

I agree. I also picked up the aspiration to support young people to be better equipped for employment thus reducing the welfare spend.

I just wish someone had given him a bottle of water. I feel like the pauses were because his lips were sticking to his teeth, he kept having to rub his tongue over them. Maybe no lectern but a small water bottle stand might have been useful! Other than that, I am feeling hopeful and optimistic. I really hope he delivers. I have wanted Andy Burnham to be PM for many years.

Perhaps we all fall into the trap of expecting more, expecting brilliant and sparkle. This speech was realistic, this is one thing I want to do, is easier to digest rather than multiple messages in one speech. It was one digestible point.

Might be his Northern accent making it confusing.

Also, this brief speech has never been the time to announce big policies and how they will be funded for any incoming PM. It is always very generic. As Andy said, he will be laying things out more specifically in the coming days. Let's give him chance. Surely we all want things to get better. Let's see what he has to offer before we all make judgements and pile on.

I am happy to give him a chance. He has hyped himself massively, which is not necessarily a bad thing as a PM needs self-confidence. Now he needs to live up to that hype. If he doesn't Labour is fucked.

Im one of them. I’m a native speaker and I find the suggestion I can’t follow (or choose not to follow) a northern accent frankly insulting.

I’ve never rated him in Parliament. He was a mediocre cabinet minister. He’s been a good mayor I think, but I’m far from convinced he’s the man for this job. I am very much hopeful he is, but I’m not going to hold back criticism on here. He’s been undermining the first Labour govenrment in 14 years in service of his own ends - he’d better be able to deliver.

I already like the start of a narrative that the focus is on CoL and fripperies (Digital ID) need to be calmed down. Because it allows a very early opening to deflect culture war criticisms that would be hard to counter.

@cardibach I agree with you. I was listening in a noisy environment and the stilted speech pattern with pauses in the wrong places made it hard to follow.

He has also already overpromised and given critics something to beat him with. Sadly, and with yhe best will in the world, you will never end homelessness. You aim to massively reduce it, and put steps in place to support people in need, but there will always be some people who will not be housed, they will need a different type of support.

He seems very idealistic, I really hope he has a real, deliverable plan, otherwise we are looking at higher prices across the board.

I work at a firm of solicitors and one of the ladies who worked here loved writing to the Nottingham Cunty Court or the Leicester Cunty Court. My personal favourites though were her lovely missives to the Office of the Pubic Guardian.

I’m reserving judgement of Andy Burnham I’m not particularly fan of his (never have been) but happy to give him a chance & as previously said if he doesn’t get to grips we are indeed totally & utterly fucked.
