Been mulling over Louise Haigh's new role and this really doesn't sit comfortably with me.
Quite apart from whether her conviction for fraud should make her unfit for high office or not - I can't help feeling that Andy Burnham has presented a gift to the press immediately. This feels like Starmer's glasses again.
A touch disappointed...

Agree. I have read/heard "convicted fraudster" being used several times already. ThevTelegraph is bashing away.

It’ll get tired of it. She should never have been convicted for something so trivial in the first place.

They’ve got a point. Apparently Farage said he’d need £1m a year to be an MP. Et voila the exact amount he said he would need for a parliamentary term appeared in his bank account just before he announced his candidacy. I wonder of he’ll give Harborne £3m back if he loses next month?

yes Harbourne’s desire to cover the full term does look something of a mistake now we all know about it!
Payment upfront & in full.

Hopefully. The press generally seem to be unable to find dirt on AB and the new cabinet and can only come up with rehashed stuff so far.

More than 120 millionaires.. have signed an open letter urging PM Andy Burnham to tax their wealth. The campaign, called 'Proud to Pay' says a 2% tax on wealth over £10m could raise £24 billion a year.

Gillian Keegan, former Conservative MP, said on Newsnight that they can already pay the extra tax if they wanted to.

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2026 09:09

Business rates to be cut by 20% for pubs, clubs and music venues in England

Burnham says relief for vape shops and other ‘non-positive’ businesses to be reviewed as part of £100m plan to fund cut

I don't expect any big policies to be announced soon, these are just creating some positivity.

Yes, that lazy response is repeated on MN quite often. Misses the point completely Confused

Vape shops, what are they good for?

Grant Shapps is considered too left wing for the Tories 😂

Exc: Grant Shapps believed to be one of at least 10 ex Tory MPs who have failed their assessments as Badenoch overhauls selection process

Super idea - let’s see what XYZ fancy paying this year and work back from that.

We don't disagree often, but I disagree with you here.

MPs should be held to a higher standard of behaviour because they set the tone for all those who they lead.

Just like the pcns for Johnson and Sunak were appropriate.

There has to be a standard and all three have fallen below it. Personally for me, that makes none of them fit for office. There are more than £5m reasons Farage is not fit.

SerendipityJane · 23/07/2026 09:32

Notonthestairs · 23/07/2026 08:50

The Tories said the £5 million payment looks like ‘disguised remuneration’.

And they should know.

The optics of being accused of sleaze by the Tories cannot be happenstance. But it could be the Tories leaning into their trump card (geddit ?). Which is the fact they did not allow Farage to do to the Tories what Trump did to the GOP.

Does that not risk a danger of a "them" and "us" government ? Especially when you consider how hard it can be to stay clear of pettifogging regulations if you are from a less privileged background ?

I hope they are waiting a long time.

The new government needs to relentless push the CoL message. Let the others shout at pigeons
