The ex-CEO of Southern Water faces a charge of conspiracy to defraud alongside three other former employees, it can now be reported.

Matthew Wright is accused of trying to cheat wastewater testing rules under the Operator Self-Monitoring (OSM) compliance regime.

You know how even if it's a DWP fuck up, innocent people are forced to repay money at the point of a jail cell ?

Is anybody able to astound cynical soul and tell me that in the event this charge is proven, bonuses paid while the criminal offence was ongoing will be recovered ?

With extreme prejudice ....

I've only been on this thread for a couple of years or so and I've never felt like an 'outsider'.

I've been on it two weeks, and I felt at home from day one.

BIWI · 22/07/2026 15:56

@pleasedontreinme

It says in the OP of all these threads:

Welcome to our long running thread for political discussion, general chit chat, a friendly hug and taxes in kind

So you are very welcome. And anyhow, you're not an outsider now as you've already jumped in and posted!

(We don't like people coming here to hector us or tell us off or tell us how we should be thinking though Wink)

pointythings · 22/07/2026 16:01

@pleasedontreinme new people are absolutely welcome. It's just that we generally expect something with a little more substance than 'Labour is bad and we're all doomed'. Thread policing is also not acceptable. Aside from that, you're good. We do disagree, as evidenced by the current thread. But we also respect each other. The bar for belonging isn't that high.

TheOnlyMrsW · 22/07/2026 16:08

Goodness these threads move fast, frantically trying to keep up while I'm pretending to work working!
I've lurked on these threads a long time, only posting very rarely until inspired by lady flower-power being so rude earlier in the week, so to the poster (sorry can't remember and if I go back to check I'll lose my words) who mentioned not being welcome it's definitely not been my experience at all, thanks again all.

I live in the frozen north (Lancashire) so have been aware of Andy Burnham for a while but I find it really difficult to believe that no-one outside of the north-west knows who he is, especially when certain areas of the RW press have been railing about him for months? I have to admit that I wasn't struck by the way he came into DS as I'd rather he waited until his mayoral term was up but by that point it would have been too close to an election to make any difference.........

The people talking about Marie-France van Heel here and elsewhere are truly vile and I have to wonder what else they have in their lives if spewing nastiness about someone they don't know is how they spend their days, I've nicked this from elsewhere but it's sad a woman cannot simply get dressed without her body becoming public property.

Yes definitely to the laughter emoji please, sign me up to that petition .

Also I can't be bothered paying attention to anyone who thinks that calling someone a freak like a shirty teenager counts as debate!

Sorry for the essay, back to my spreadsheets I go!

PS: lots of luck to pointythings DS tomorrow

The media is frantic too, I think that feeds into this thread.

It's almost as if they (or their paymasters) believed their own hype and thought that "Starmer out"="general election".

Incidentally, am I alone in wondering if the BBC have a bonus scheme for copywriters, for the fewest words before the word "but" into a positive government story ?

Yes. I see MN is busy spinning the bus fare cap into a negative.

Yes. I see MN is busy spinning the bus fare cap into a negative.

It is amusing the alleged number of posters who like to state how it doesn't benefit them. Where were they when Liz Truss was spunking hundreds of billions into unfunded tax cuts for billionaires ?

Which we are all - them and us - still paying for. Unto eternity.

DuncinToffee · 22/07/2026 16:36

I think they were all lecturing us on 'trickle down economics'

Those threads were wild, deluded.

OP posts:
TemperanceWest · 22/07/2026 16:41

I think some of them are secretly horrified at the idea of using a bus and would barely know how to. A while back I read someone recounting an "amusing" (not) tale of a bus journey as if they had been, I don't know, travelling on a bus full of those they deem slightly subhuman compared to themselves.

Worryingly we'll need a new thread again soon, it only feels like a couple of days ago when we had the last one 😆
Sybil seems to have a new box

Sorry, what ? I presume you mean lead? Who's the dog exactly? And why are we collectively in charge of what someone else does? Do you realise hiw ridiculous you sound?

I don't even understand your first sentence. I assume it's nasty.

Greenleavesandsunshine · 22/07/2026 16:53

Just listening to The Rest is Politics, AB wants a written constitution. I kind of wonder if we go through the process of writing a constitution then when politics happens (AB becomes a PM with no election) people will understand the process. Will we get less wails about ‘ it’s not democratic’ when what people really mean is: I don’t understand it.
Probably not.
Incidentally TRiP does go through ABs beliefs and backstory quite well.

I think we’re well aware they don’t like us. They really don’t need to swoop over here to tell us.
