Fell asleep on the sofa the second I walked in and spent the rest of the evening feeling confused and sick

You need to take these symptoms seriously. You were very likely suffering heat exhaustion which is one step away from heatstroke.

I understand you're in a difficult position. I imagine it's not easy to call in sick and you're expected to just push through. But if you ever get those symptoms at work, please do something about it. It's not worth risking brain damage or even death.

The thread where the OPs relative was in hospital, close to death, she may have passed now, I haven't looked at it recently. Anyway, people were tying themselves in knots trying to pass it off as being due to numerous other factors. Even though the OP herself said yes the relative had underlying conditions but the doctors/consultants were very clear it was heatstroke that caused it.

I'm not trying to "scaremonger". But at the same time, people do need to take the risk of heatstroke seriously. Know the symptoms and what to do if you suffer them. There seems to be this pressure to just push on through and so many people minimise the effects of this heat. I get quite mad reading some threads on here! No one should be telling people online to just suck it up and get on with it when they don't even know the person, their medical history etc. It's dangerous advice.

Agree with all this. Twenty years ago during another horrific heatwave I worked in a gym complex where the heat was so unprecedented for their air conditioning system it broke down - this happened in all their branches up and down the country that year. We had many clients ill with heat exhaustion and some of us staff felt bad too. I already alerted them I wasn’t well but the culture was we came in regardless. Well, already heat intolerant and wary due to previous heat exhaustion in the past, I collapsed and don’t actually remember anything. I had rushed to the staff changing rooms which we rarely used, as it was closest to where I was and I was feeling very sick. I passed out and no one found me for ages. Once I sought medical advice I was told I was “very lucky “ as this was all symptomatic of being on the cusp of heat stroke. And despite this medical history subsequent workplaces still don’t take it seriously, expecting me to work in a hard physical job in this.

My plan had been to get some blinds but at this point in time I just want to move so don’t want the added expense.

I tried the white sheets but not a patch on the spaceman look. It’s amazing how effective it is. But you have to put it on the outside of the glass for it to really work.

Shutters would be ideal but can’t get those as it’s an HA abode.

My DH was similarly unconvinced until we had a conversation with someone we both like and respect and it was her DH who arranged it all and she was the reluctant one. We had AC installed in our bedroom last August, ironically during a heatwave so our poor fitter was suffering! Our bedroom gets roasting despite shutters and curtains and opening / closing windows. That helps, until it doesn’t.

The bliss of being able to go into a cool bedroom and sleep is priceless. It’s also installed in another bedroom so our AC stays over for respite.

You're not nasty at all @JenniferBooth Flowers You're just passionate about your cause - and understandably! This week it's going to be up to 33-34C where I am, and today it's going to be 25-26C, but HUMID. I have done a bunch of things in the garden this morning before it gets too hot, but even at 11am I was struggling with the humidity. I am done now for the day and have just had lunch, and am sitting in front of the fan watching Loose Women! (Will go back in the garden after and sit in the shade and read my book!)

@DancingLions Sadly, that poster's relative (her aunt I think, apologies to that poster if I am wrong) died a few days ago. She never recovered. I think she had an underlying health issue, (COPD) and had developed double pneumonia, but the heat in her home exacerbated it, and her internal organs started to struggle...

So there is a strong chance that during the heatwave in late June, the severe heat in her (social housing) flat contributed to her death.

@the80sweregreat I read a thread on MN about buying a hot water bottle, half filling it with cold water, sticking it in the freezer and using it at night to cool down. Apparently you can’t then use it as a hwb because it damages the seal or something. But it could be a cheap option for the time being.

This has been a lifesaver for me the last couple of summers... that and a fan by the bed.

For some reason, since menopause over ten years ago, I now run hot All The Damn Time - even in winter I have a summer duvet and no heating on in my bedroom. Went for a walk in the shady woods yesterday and had to take off all my wringing clothes when I got home, sweat was running off me... And I swear my brain swells - I can't think straight, can't think of words...

So you can imagine how I feel when people say we should lighten up and embrace these heatwaves... 😤

That sounds challenging, @JenniferBooth . Will you be able to take someone with you for support?

I think i will be ok They were very sympathetic on Saturday

Zov · 07/07/2026 13:48

@mumofoneAloneandwell started the last heatwave thread. I haven't seen her for a few weeks now! (She last posted about 3 weeks ago.) Hope she's OK. She was quite a regular poster.

If you're out there, and reading this, I hope you're OK @mumofoneAloneandwell ! Flowers

Anyway, I'm off out into the garden now to read my book. Have a lovely day everyone! 😘

Weather warning here. Very unusual this early in the summer.
temperatures expected to hit 38 with overnight lows of 22.
sitting under the gazebo currently but about to go in and sit under the AC

ConstantlyFuriosa · 07/07/2026 20:04

Another bloody itchy mosquito bite! I don’t know how. I eat a lot of garlic and thought they weren’t partial?

And no end to this godforsaken heat.

the80sweregreat · 07/07/2026 20:16

I can’t see any end to it. It’s just going on and on!
Even the weather people have stopped with the big red warnings for the south east now
I hope we get some rain soon ish.
We do need it.

Got a text and email from the water company today saying we should be restricting water usage and that they’ve temporarily lowered the water pressure because of increased load. Great.

There was a point when it rained a couple of weeks ago and I was so happy! Bring back the clouds!

Bad enough being begrudged air con in this country without being begrudged water too

ConstantlyFuriosa · 07/07/2026 21:24

It always makes me think of those dystopian films where the rich are separated by the poor to such extremes that they own all the air and water and the rest of us are left scrabbling round for scraps.

Doesn’t seem so far-fetched now.

ConstantlyFuriosa · Yesterday 10:56

Mention of dystopian films kills thread.

Dreading today and tomorrow. Hope everyone is doing ok.

the80sweregreat · Yesterday 11:34

I watch the forecast in the mornings with horror.
I know it’s not been that great for Scotland with poor weather , but I’d love to swap. I can’t move up there for so many reasons. I just want some rain and some respite from this heat. I wake up feeling sad I can’t enjoy it ( like other people seem to)

I hate this summer. Shitty weather, Trump war, political shite etc.....England losing to Norway (I predict 2-1).

I'm dreaming of snuggling up with my hot water bottle while it snows outside. Not that it will happen due to global warming.😭

the80sweregreat · Yesterday 11:50

Pink, I think that England might lose too :(
I won’t bother watching any more games and just be praying for the WC to end and this rotten weather too.
Maybe August might not be as hot. I live in hope

What has helped me is a foot spa, I actually remembered that in the garage I had a foot spa, about 10 years old, so I dusted it off, filled it with cold water and it’s really helped, much more than a fan which just rotates warm air. Think it’s because pulse in ankles is under cool water. They’re not expensive, Superdrug, Boots, Amazon all have them, under £30. Mine is a Revlon.

Black plastic builders' buckets are also available for a quid at your local DIY stores

I read an article online ages ago that governments were blocking out the sun. If it any of it is true ( and costing millions ) they are doing a terrible job of it this year!

For those people that can afford air con, but can't fit air con, there are now portable split systems. They are far superior to the all in one units with the hose hanging out of an open window.

https://www.midea.com/uk/air-treatment/porta-split-air-conditioner.portasplit

They're around a grand, but there's obviously no need to pay a gas safe engineer £1500 to fit it.

If you're in a flat with a balcony, you could potentially get a handyman to temporarily remove the door and frame, chisel out a notch to the side of the door frame for the piping, fit the system and then replace the frame and door so that it's permanently installed and can run without any doors or windows needing to be open.

I think the opposite has been happening. The reduction in particulate air pollution has reduced its shielding effect and increased the intensity of the sun hitting the ground in Northern Europe.
