There is a tiny gap between the mercury and the maximum temperature marker. The flat is at 30.5 degrees now downstairs and considerably hotter upstairs though the bathroom cools off quickest.

SW mids. Was forecast 31 outside today.

The breeze has stopped and it feels shit and so close and humid. I was doing ok until about two hours ago. Even managed washing up earlier which didn't happen last time.

The flat has not really cooled down since the last heatwave.

Installing air con would need permission . Can't do shutters outside as we would all have to do the same and not everyone is as equally effected. Half the top flats are NW or NE so cooler. Bottom two stories have flats with dual aspect so a cool side, though all living rooms are on the hot side in these. There are approx 1/4 of the flats that only face SW or SE only (and are on top floors) that are worst effected so unlikely to get through any chances with the management.

I'm being thick here and blaming the heat. Please, how does this work in an upstairs room?!

I don't think it would really be possible with an upstairs window unless you had a suitable shelf bolted to the outside wall. You couldn't safely leave the outdoor unit dangling from the pipes.

If you have a loft conversion with patio style doors, you could potentially attach the outdoor unit to the safety balustrade with a bracket or fit a suitable shelf type thing and sit it on that.

The problem with these portable split systems is always going to be the non-detachable pipes. If you don't want to have the pipes passing through an open door or window, and you're happy to have it permanently installed, you'd need to have the door/window+frame removed so that the pipes could be channelled into the edge of the wall and then have the door/window refitted. I've no idea how much that might cost and it might get a bit messy - you'd probably be better just getting a proper split system fitted.

I think that solution is only really practical for people living in apartments that have balconies if they aren't allowed to fit proper split systems.

It’s 10pm and it’s 29 degrees!

It’s madness and the fans are pointless as they just waft hot air from one side of the room to another.

I’m going to close my eyes and take myself back to the days where I went to Lapland about 5 years ago and it was minus 19 degrees……

That's the issue. I was actually going to buy that one for upstairs but it would have involved somehow building something onto the windowsill to hold it. I have sash windows so that could have worked, but I'd have had to pay someone to make sure it was properly secure.

I believe the outside parts can be fixed onto an exterior wall but I'm in rented so I couldn't. Plus I live in a conservation area so potential issues with the council. Even my idea re the windowsill could have caused issues so in the end I decided against it.

I've just discovered that you can get 'no drill' air con window brackets. I think they'd work well with sash windows, but not windows that open outwards.

34 degrees forecast here tomorrow after a 31 degree day today and no chance to cool overnight. Fuck but this is horrendous.

I can only imagine the people ‘loving it’ have airconned homes and workplaces.

tfu · Yesterday 22:42

After staring at my dead air con hose and trying and failing to get it working I used chat gpt to help me fix it - and voila it’s working again hurrah. One cool room
for sleeping it good enough for me

I have an incredibly sweaty toddler and 2 elderly dogs and I caved and bought an air con unit it’s good as long as we are all stuck in one room all day and it’s misery lol

Where did you get the unit? I can’t find one for my mum anywhere!

narcASD · Yesterday 23:49

Utterly sick of this heat now, 29.5 in my bedroom, so sticky, irritated and exhausted with it.
I have 3 days annual leave and it's wasted as can't do anything and I so needed a break from it all.

Looking at my weather forecast it's set to last another week at least!

JenniferBooth · Today 00:13

Just waiting for a neighbour to complain to the HA about my late night baths. If they do i have my reply ready and it includes air con

walkingmyway · Today 00:18

Thank you very much, confirmed what I was thinking. Oh well 😪

Today will be the worst but hopefully cooler overnight from here in

I got up at 5. 34 expected today. Jobs done. Planning on weeding 7.30 to 9.30, cool shower, and then contemplating driving an hour or so to Blue Water, which has air con. More than two hours in the car with a/c on full blast. Home by 7 to water, bought salad, switch on barbecue, doze under the gazebo until midnight, bed.

Unilurker · Today 06:34

Dreading work- hot office with no aircon and mostly glass fronted building. We have blinds and a. Desk fan each but they make little difference. Our jobs can be done from home as we work part of the week WFH, but they simply will not listen. To top it off I take a medication which can make me dehydrated and in this weather just feeling even worse than I usually do.

ConstantlyFuriosa · Today 06:45

35 today apparently. Not the much cooler 34. What fun.

The forecast for my part of the world (south east) has 30s and high 20s for the foreseeable. I want to weep.

MoonlightMemories · Today 07:16

Fabulous, I've now developed heat rash/prickly heat on the sides of my stomach and hips....it's so damn itchy and annoying! Today is going to be even hotter then yesterday and humidity has shot up to 60% again.....it's going to very uncomfortable day, isn't it? 😥

Sunshineandrainbow · Today 07:20

34 today and 33 for me today, yuck,

I woke up dripping in the night. Rank

I felt that in the last heat wave, I took a day off and couldn't do anything 😕

oustedbymymate · Today 07:25

Joining. Here we go again. I just can’t sleep when it’s 32 degrees at 10pm and there’s no air con or infact air. I was up at 5am and it’s still 28!!!!

Sunshineandrainbow · Today 07:29

@DancingLions could you let us know the makes of Aircon you have please?

I have accepted I won't get one until the winter due to stock but gives me time to do some research!

PinkOrchard · Today 07:37

Misery loves company over here! It's 30/31° down this way and I'm currently 5 days overdue with baby no2! I've got an 18 month old as well who is desperate to go outside but I'm just a puddle even looking at the sun 🤣 hopefully only another two days of the heat and then it cools down to a more reasonable 25° 🤞🏻 the fan and ice lollies are my best friend at the moment haha

BlackeyedSusan · Today 08:03

We've cooled down overnight...

<drumroll>

...a lovely "cool" 29 degrees centigrade

I've adapted a bit. 29 feels bearable. 28 was the max before.
