I really dont get why ppl like being all sweaty. I tend to wear body mists in the summer and has anyone noticed how they are all summer based. Some of them are lovely but the citrusy tropical ones remind me of heatwaves. Where are the Christmas based ones Soap and Glory do one at Xmas and i once got an Avon cranberry and cinnamon one as a Christmas gift from SIL But they are few and far between

I really, really hate those ‘ozone’ ones that are supposed to smell like the sea but just smell of chemicals to me.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/07/2026 22:28

Exactly, but some people seem to really like it!

The humidity has definitely increased massively since 6:30

Sorry, I am totally obsessed. Or - maybe I thought it was nice because I had just come out of an air-conditioned pub?

Its the thermal bricks apparently Suck up all the heat during the day and then release it inside at night.

My single best purchase thus far is an emergency reflective blanket that I’ve taped to the back door which gets the full glare from the west. In an ideal world I’d put some in my living room windows but I face other flats and houses and I don’t think they’d like it much as it might rebound the sun onto them.

But my back door is cool to the touch even though it’s still boiling in here!

@ConstantlyFuriosa you will get the same effect by draping any fabric on the outside of windows

You say that @AmazingSummer but I tried a white sheet and it wasn’t a patch on the emergency blanket. The windows still felt hot to the touch.

What’s everyone else doing about cooking? I can barely stand to put the microwave on.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/07/2026 22:37

@JenniferBooth I know - I'm the one who's always banging on about thermal bricks on here 😂 because people seem baffled by the concept that some buildings don't cool down and they don't realise that we would benefit from air-conditioning from May to October.

@ConstantlyFuriosa I really love those ozonic scents 😳

i'm not cooking except occasionally poaching eggs in the microwave. It's not ideal.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 06/07/2026 22:38

It could be that thing @EmeraldRoulette where certain perfumes react badly on your skin. I used to adore opium on other people but it smelled horrible on me!

Picky bits! An MN tradition.
Pita, hummus, cucumber sticks, yoghurts, falafel, cheese...

I cooked last Tuesday night..............got all hot packing shopping away and cooking and washing up. Had a bath went to bed. Woke up on Wednesday morning with a really itchy right ear which developed into an ear infection over the course of two days then on Saturday night spread to the other ear. Caused by the humidity in here.

I was thinking of the windows you said you can't have it on
The sun hits us at the back at 2 ISH ln wards on a heat trap and on our most glassy area

We drape sheets outside and inside the glass is definitely cool

Zov · 06/07/2026 22:49

@ConstantlyFuriosa Yeah, re: cooking (or the lack of!) We've been having salads, fruit, cheese and crackers, mini chilled cucumbers, tomatoes, hard boiled eggs, mange tout, tinned tomatoes/spaghetti hoops/beans on toast, sandwiches, tuna, yogurts, pot rices, and just a few microwave meals/ready meals for the oven.

Like feck am I standing in a hot kitchen for 45 minutes peeling, chopping, boiling, baking!!! Luckily our kitchen is north east facing, and the back door is in the kitchen, so I can open it, but it's still HOT (and by evening - as has been said - the humidity kicks in!)

It didn’t work for me. Although I could only drape the sheet across the middle two windows that open inwards, leaving the far panes uncovered. May be why it was less effective. I don’t know how I’d stretch across to get any covering on the outside of those.

I’m a teacher and I’m lying here awake really worried about how I’ll survive the week. I spent all day in my classroom yesterday which is just unbearable at the moment. Last week it was around 27 degrees which is manageable but yesterday it was back in the thirties all day and none of us can cope. The children’s behaviour is shocking. They can’t get any learning done and I just feel really sorry for them. I came home with a pounding headache and feeling sick. Fell asleep on the sofa the second I walked in and spent the rest of the evening feeling confused and sick.

I can’t do another day in that room. My Head is one of the very few in my local area who refuses to close the school early because of heat so I’m going to have to spend the week wandering around the building looking for spaces for the children to sit. It’s so stressful and the lack of routine isn’t exactly going to help with learning or behaviour. I just want a normal week so we can actually get some lessons done.

If parents knew how bad things were, I don’t think they’d be sending their children in. It’s just awful.

RhosynCymru · 07/07/2026 08:21

Thank you for the new thread. I have always suffered reverse sad and heat intolerance and what with losing my last remaining parent recently, the loss of my friend’s dog who we used to babysit a lot and the fact that I am still desperately unhappy at work and no chance of another job (been trying for three years there is nothing!) this relentless summer has been the final straw and I’ve pretty much cried most of the time since mid April . Feel like I’ve given up on life and just existing in a fug full of endless heat and the headaches it causes.

I feel for you. My work doesn't involve dealing with many people or children.
Just as well as I am a snappy cow in the heat.
It's 8.30 and I am hot!

So happy to see a new thread for us heatwave haters! Thanks for starting it.
We've had a stressful weekend which had nothing to do with the football but ended up with a trip to hospital. The A&E & AMA unit were packed but thankfully had air con. I never thought I'd say this but it was actually nicer in hospital than out! (Apart from the worry of what happened of course)

DancingLions · 07/07/2026 12:16

You need to take these symptoms seriously. You were very likely suffering heat exhaustion which is one step away from heatstroke.

I understand you're in a difficult position. I imagine it's not easy to call in sick and you're expected to just push through. But if you ever get those symptoms at work, please do something about it. It's not worth risking brain damage or even death.

The thread where the OPs relative was in hospital, close to death, she may have passed now, I haven't looked at it recently. Anyway, people were tying themselves in knots trying to pass it off as being due to numerous other factors. Even though the OP herself said yes the relative had underlying conditions but the doctors/consultants were very clear it was heatstroke that caused it.

I'm not trying to "scaremonger". But at the same time, people do need to take the risk of heatstroke seriously. Know the symptoms and what to do if you suffer them. There seems to be this pressure to just push on through and so many people minimise the effects of this heat. I get quite mad reading some threads on here! No one should be telling people online to just suck it up and get on with it when they don't even know the person, their medical history etc. It's dangerous advice.

JenniferBooth · 07/07/2026 12:27

YY Yes i was on that thread but apparently i was the one in the wrong for pointing out the link to the overheating problems in SH to the point that two threads have been started about me, one on Site Stuff here and one on the site that must not be named despite the fact that i also pointed out that yes two consultants had pointed out it WAS heat stroke. I pointed out that six years ago a consultants word was law and over on MTR that sentence has been taken completely out of context when i was obvs pointing out the hypocrisy of them believing medics when it suits them Even worse someone has posted a comment THAT I DIDNT EVEN SAY

JenniferBooth · 07/07/2026 12:30

And IM the nasty one!

Belladog1 · 07/07/2026 12:41

Can I join in? I am a 'max 25 degrees' kinda gal. Anything higher and I'm done.

I haven't slept well in weeks now even though I have a great fan in the bedroom. My feet now resemble trotters as they swelled up during the last heatwave and were just going down when this one hit. I am limited to wearing 10yr old strappy sandals as nothing else will go over them. Even my trainers hurt!

I too look terrible in summer clothes. I look forward to getting home every day (around 2pm) to get into my shorts and t-shirt ... and I just flop on the sofa watching rubbish TV until it cools off. The house is a state and I'm getting nothing done.

Luckily I live alone with two dogs, and they don't care!
