And ive got something important to do tomorrow

Hope your ear infection clears up soon. That’s all you need.

I got bitten by a mozzie the other night and my whole arm swelled up! Mosquito bastards.

I agree that summer clothes are hideous on me. I am not the dress wearing type ( they don’t suit me) and can’t wear sandals due to my ridiculous feet. I do think this adds to my dislike of the hot weather as I can’t look cool because I don’t suit summer clothes and I just want to cover up too much. Some people can look fantastic when it’s hot.,

What do you normally wear?
There will definitely be summer clothes that suit you. If you post on the Style and Beauty board you will get loads of helpful recommendations.

Covering up in winter clothes doesn't give you any more "camouflage" than wearing the right summer clothes.
Loose, lightweight trousers with a loose top makes you feel much cooler than anything tight fitting.

the80sweregreat · 06/07/2026 20:09

I do have some shorts and cropped trousers and t shirts, but I never feel right in them! I need to go shopping really and have a proper look at whats out there.

@the80sweregreat I read a thread on MN about buying a hot water bottle, half filling it with cold water, sticking it in the freezer and using it at night to cool down. Apparently you can’t then use it as a hwb because it damages the seal or something. But it could be a cheap option for the time being.

the80sweregreat · 06/07/2026 20:33

The cold water bottle is a good idea!

I often cuddle an ice pack at night in bed

My single best purchase thus far is an emergency reflective blanket that I’ve taped to the back door which gets the full glare from the west. In an ideal world I’d put some in my living room windows but I face other flats and houses and I don’t think they’d like it much as it might rebound the sun onto them.

But my back door is cool to the touch even though it’s still boiling in here!

If you don’t want to put shiny silver on the windows, you can use thermal blinds with a white back. Not as good, but nearly!

I am trying to find the drill bits so I can put up all the thermal blinds I just bought before the heat gets really bad here again (NE).

floofydoofy · 06/07/2026 21:40

I used to like hot weather but I'm currently breastfeeding (not sure why this always makes me hotter/sweat more???) a sweaty 8mo, I have the busiest week which is going to involve a lot of walking up/down hills to collect child A from one place, take them to another, then walk back to the original place to collect child B (which will be a rush) and I cannot be ARSED. It was bad enough doing it today and it wasn't even THAT hot. FFs. And I can cope with not sleeping; I've had years of practice lol - but the kids not sleeping just makes them so irritable and I can't cope with that. If they close the school again I will cry.

DH and I have decided that unless anything major comes up with the house in the meantime, the next big job we do to the house is to get air conditioning installed in the bedrooms. It has been on my radar for a few years, but DH was unconvinced until the last heatwave and now he wishes he had listened to me!

ConstantlyFuriosa · 06/07/2026 21:41

My plan had been to get some blinds but at this point in time I just want to move so don’t want the added expense.

I tried the white sheets but not a patch on the spaceman look. It’s amazing how effective it is. But you have to put it on the outside of the glass for it to really work.

Shutters would be ideal but can’t get those as it’s an HA abode.

HAs will have to get on board sooner or later or a lot of their flats will become uninhabitable. Shutters and more trees would be a good start

@the80sweregreat

Checking in. I don't hate the heat, I enjoy the summer and warm weather, but hate the humidity, it gives me a headache, and makes me struggle to sleep. 😖

When it's past 32-33C I start struggling. (Humid or not!) I do get why some people struggle, even when it's over 25C, and I do have empathy Flowers

I have done the most basic of housework since mid the third week in May, because I CBA due to the heat... and have been a bit lazy with a general CBA vibe in general! I have been OK in the garden though as it's generally not stuffy outside, up to about midday. The house is much stuffier.

Hope I am allowed to stay.... Grin (I was on the last one.)

I would say many are already uninhabitable. This place is truly vile in summer. It’s a process of simply getting through the days. No way to live. From everything you’ve said about your place I’m sure you can relate (unfortunately).

ConstantlyFuriosa · 06/07/2026 21:54

And I’m one of the ‘lucky’ ones because I have an outside space even though it’s an upstairs maisonette. I can’t imagine how people in flats without cope because every day it’s over 25 outside it gets to 30 and above inside this place because of the east and west facing windows. I can at least get a little respite once the sun goes down.

ConstantlyFuriosa · 06/07/2026 21:56

My other top tip other than the cooking meth look is that if you do have windows facing opposite, point a fan out of one side (the way the wind is blowing) and it will help cool the room a little.

Fizbosshoes · 06/07/2026 21:57

I generally like summer but the 36° heat was too much. Im currently on holiday in the balearics and its forecast to be 39° on Wednesday. Im really panicking about it. The villa we're staying at doesnt have air con and DH can't/wont understand about keeping doors/windows closed at the hottest part of the day....which tbh lasts til about 9pm. We're also being bitten to pieces by mosquitos.
I feel really bad that I spent a fortune on a holiday and Im counting the days til we come home where its "only" 30°. (We came to a similar area last year and it was around 29/30° which was fine)

DozyCrow · 06/07/2026 22:02

As a post menopausal woman, I don't do heat. I'm happy when it's about 22/23 degrees but anything more and I'm dripping as soon as I move than 3 feet away from my fan. I find daytimes the worst as I can't get anything done. Nighttime not so bad as I have a 'portable' (it's fucking heavy) air con unit that I have going all night. It's noisy but I've learned to block it out.

I hope you're OK @JenniferBooth Flowers I know you've posted before about your overly toasty flat! I really hope it can get sorted, and that you don't suffer too much. Today was not humid (where I am North Midlands) so it was a bit more bearable, I hope there's low humidity for you too.

chubley · 06/07/2026 22:08

garlictwist · 06/07/2026 18:35

I'm jealous. Cool. grey and windy here in Yorkshire.

The warm sunshine is coming to us from Wednesday.

The humidity isn’t looking too bad.

chubley · 06/07/2026 22:19

RampantIvy · 06/07/2026 19:55

I like summer, but the last heatwave was too much for me, but here in Yorkshire it is warmish and extremely windy. No sign of a heatwave.

Same here. The wind is forecast to drop from Wednesday with 29 degrees where we are in Yorkshire on Thursday so the bedrooms will be way too hot again with only fans for airflow. I hate it above 25 degrees, 22 is my happy place. When we can we want to get aircon for upstairs!

EmeraldRoulette · 06/07/2026 22:20

@VikingLady so NE is forecast to get it as well? I thought there was a bit of a north south divide this time.

I've been out for an evening walk and outside is disgustingly humid actually so keeping the windows open in this flat is not a good idea tonight.

I particularly hate the tropical night thing. It's disgusting. I know some people pay to go to places like that but I am not one of them! Perhaps I could rent my flat out to those people 😂

The only thing i would be able to rent my flat out as would be a sauna

ConstantlyFuriosa · 06/07/2026 22:26

It’s also very different being in a hot country where they’re used to that sort of thing. I remember loving Greece in my youth and the balmy nights felt lovely.

Cut to a flat in the south of England during a humid heatwave with no beach, no sea, and work the next day and things seem very different!

JenniferBooth · 06/07/2026 22:27

I really dont get why ppl like being all sweaty. I tend to wear body mists in the summer and has anyone noticed how they are all summer based. Some of them are lovely but the citrusy tropical ones remind me of heatwaves. Where are the Christmas based ones Soap and Glory do one at Xmas and i once got an Avon cranberry and cinnamon one as a Christmas gift from SIL But they are few and far between

I have bought a bunch of light linen blend trousers, shorts and tshirts from Uniqlo.

Exactly, but some people seem to really like it!

The humidity has definitely increased massively since 6:30

Sorry, I am totally obsessed. Or - maybe I thought it was nice because I had just come out of an air-conditioned pub?
