For those people that can afford air con, but can't fit air con, there are now portable split systems. They are far superior to the all in one units with the hose hanging out of an open window.

https://www.midea.com/uk/air-treatment/porta-split-air-conditioner.portasplit

They're around a grand, but there's obviously no need to pay a gas safe engineer £1500 to fit it.

If you're in a flat with a balcony, you could potentially get a handyman to temporarily remove the door and frame, chisel out a notch to the side of the door frame for the piping, fit the system and then replace the frame and door so that it's permanently installed and can run without any doors or windows needing to be open.

Currently unavailable on Amazon. No portable AC units in stock anywhere. Mine broke after barely a month. Got a full refund but am wary of buying a cheaper one again. Looks like they won't be in stock until spring 😔

I’m going to a concert tonight at Wembley Stadium which I had been looking forward to. Now I think the most comfortable I’ll be is in the car there and back with the air con! If I hadn’t spent so much on tickets I actually think I might just say “sod it!” And not go…. But I can’t - I’m taking three other people too! Urghhh - wish me luck!

In America, Bosch sell Midea units that are rebadged as Bosch. I think they're meant to be quite decent.

I love places with air con. It was freezing in tesco the other day , bliss!

OP posts:
ScaredButUnavoidable · Yesterday 12:55

Currently 29/30 degrees where I am, and will be reaching 33 degrees tomorrow 😞

At least it gives me an excuse to avoid doing all housework because it’s too bloody hot to do anything.

My sleep has started to be affected too over the last few nights due to the temperature creeping up (despite the fans) so I’m feeling more miserable because of that too.

I want to fast forward to October!

Yes. I wasn't clear. I bought a £200 budget brand portable unit off Amazon in the spring. Rubbish ! If I wasn't thinking of moving soon I'd spend a couple of thousand on proper fixed Aircon for the bedroom.

If i had my way i would include my kitchen so the fridge freezer doesnt have to struggle so much

JenniferBooth · Yesterday 17:13

I wonder how much this is going to cost the NHS

DancingLions · Yesterday 17:19

Anyone looking to buy portable air con, you have to keep trying and sign up for email alerts etc. As you can get lucky.

My bedroom one decided to pack up on me so I'd researched the one I wanted and just managed to nab one yesterday on a website I hadn't heard of before, although I did check them on trust pilot to make sure it was legit! Soon as I bought it, it was coming up out of stock again so I must have got the last one. I'd been signed up to numerous sites and just kept checking.

Its true that portables have their limitations. I have a split portable downstairs, similar to the one linked above, and its brilliant. But for a smallish bedroom, they work and are far better than nothing!

This weather makes me SO depressed. I am SO much happier in the winter, autumn and spring.

I'm being thick here and blaming the heat. Please, how does this work in an upstairs room?!

Teuchterlass · Yesterday 18:50

Native Scot living in England who fails to function above 25degrees here. I currently haven’t the energy to get up from my chair to make tea so I thought I’d slip in with a suggestion that might help you sleep.

I use aquasorb towels- the biggest I have found are sold as dog towels and are 1m x40cm. They are a synthetic chamois/ shammy cloth and as soon as you open them they feel cool- almost clammy.
They can be used straight from the pack and will keep cool for a while, but when they warm and dry up they go hard. Then soak them in cold water and squeeze the surplus out. I usually have at least one for my head and one over my body, you will instantly cool down and sleep will follow!
If you wake up and it isn’t cold any more, whizz it around your head a couple of times and once again it will be icy cold!

Usually body heat will stop the bedding from getting wet but just air it well next day.
The cloths can be shoved in a quick wash to freshen them up.
I got my latest couple from Amazon, search synthetic chamois/shammy dog towels. You want the smooth looking one not a knitted fabric one.
Honestly- it sounds daft but it really works!

Yep me too. I'm so glad this thread is here. I'm off work with stress from just everything going wrong in life especially work. I wish it was all over

It seems to need the windows to open inward though, most windows in the UK open outward.

I purposely got the major bits of housework done at the weekend ahead of the heatwave so that I didn't have to worry about that. I did insanely make a roast dinner yesterday evening (leftovers can now be had for the next few days....that was my thinking 🤣) and the West-facing kitchen reached 30 degrees at one point.....bedroom on the same side is getting hotter and hotter....nearly 28 again today and tonight is going to be another very warm night by the looks of things...

Just slouching around on undies and t-shirt as it's honestly just too hot for proper clothes right now....even with a fan!

@JenniferBooth I hope your ear infection gets better soon - I had one a couple of months ago after tonsillitis and a sinus infection and it was dreadful even in cooler weather....my ear is still recovering a bit as it's very sound sensitive at times. The initial pain was particularly awful....you have my sympathies and best wishes on a speedy recovery 🥰

That's the issue. I was actually going to buy that one for upstairs but it would have involved somehow building something onto the windowsill to hold it. I have sash windows so that could have worked, but I'd have had to pay someone to make sure it was properly secure.

I believe the outside parts can be fixed onto an exterior wall but I'm in rented so I couldn't. Plus I live in a conservation area so potential issues with the council. Even my idea re the windowsill could have caused issues so in the end I decided against it.

It always makes me think of those dystopian films where the rich are separated by the poor to such extremes that they own all the air and water and the rest of us are left scrabbling round for scraps.

Doesn’t seem so far-fetched now.

OMG! Like The Simpsons when Mr Burns took control of the sun! 😱

Zov · Yesterday 19:33

I have a feeling England will lose to Norway too. But I would have put a month's salary on Mexico beating them over the weekend. So fingers crossed!

Thank you very much for explaining and also, it seems, I wasn't being dim. I did get excited initially at the thought of the unit in the bedroom!

And many futuristic sci-fi films where plucky humans have gone in search of new planets to terraform as Earth has become uninhabitable. Meanwhile, the rich either have their own planets or live in vast gated communities* with armed security, far away from the hoi polloi.

Actually, I may rewatch that one with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster tonight. Elysium. Worth a watch if anyone hasn’t seen it.

*With clean air and water, natch.

I’m hugging my frozen yuyu (ooh err!). Can’t remember where or even when I learned about them, very long ice packs, but it’s all that’s keeping me alive at the moment. Highly recommend.
