A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

My bar for Christmas movies is as low as it is for disaster movies. I love them all. I'm a complete sucker for them.

Haha I love a disaster movie. It’s a running joke with ds as I always cite disaster as best genre.

I still think the ultimate one hasn’t been made yet though. It could be better. Greenland - why’d they let him off the plane?

They are good fun, I say show me a good big wave and I’m in.

Before you even get to the being allowed off the plane ....why do they keep letting go of their kid's hand and just carry his bloody meds for him...I spent the whole thing judging their piss poor parenting, still enjoyed it though.

I think, because I am a geek, I have declared my favourite disaster movie on one of the earlier threads and that's a Norwegian movie called 'The Wave'. Perfect peril to cheese ratio.

Hallmark Christmas movies are mainly awful with the odd semi gem.

I admit I prefer the old classics

Of course. You can’t beat it’s a Wonderful Life and - just because it’s usually somewhere in the Christmas schedules - Casablanca.

I will admit that I have a minor allergy to Richard Curtis films generally. They shout “SMUG!” at me.

They are smug. It's the best kind of smug. Christmas smug. <Gavel>

Nuthatch26 · 18/06/2026 14:04

I haven't seen Greenland. Will look for it.

Olympus Has Fallen is my favourite for cheese/peril ratio. I watched it again at the weekend.

Yeh there’s some good bits but geez what were they thinking?! 😬

Ooh an actual film called The Wave, will have to search it up

You will love it.

Olympus has Fallen is also very good. London has Fallen was a good sequel, as well, although strikingly more violent.

EasternStandard · 18/06/2026 14:07

Which reminds me there’s a terrible movie where two huge waves are so big they cancel each other out and everyone’s fine. Plus they are going in the wrong direction.

Now I’m wondering if that was the wave 😬

it was bad to good ratio

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 18/06/2026 14:08

There’s a British disaster movie nearly wrapping at the moment. It’s said to be terrifying.

It’s called “Makerfield: the return of Burnham

Sounds good too. Need something to watch. Am up to date with The Pitt.

The one I like is, spoiler alert, a tsunami in the Norwegian Fjords, caused by collapsing ice.

Yes! The dubbed voices are awful so worth watching with the subtitles.

Ah found it! Was bugging me, your version sounds way better. Will watch that

This was the one I saw, really bad
La Palma
The characters realize a safe zone in the bay where two massive waves crash directly into each other. Rather than multiplying the destruction, the two waves magically cancel each other out, leaving the main characters completely fine and unscathed at the water's edge

Yeah, it's much better than La Palma.

That would explain his delusion. Apparently his wife is also egging him on to fight it out. Echoes of Biden.

I'm amazed they're still married, frankly!

Wash your mouth out @Nuthatch26 - you can’t refer to “Army” when speaking about a RM 😜

That said, of course AC will keep telling us how hard he is - he’s a Bootneck, it’s what they do! Same applies to RAF pilots - as the joke goes:

”How do you know if an RAF officer is a pilot? Don’t worry, he’ll tell you!”

See also this video from the NZ RAF:

🤣🤣

My soon-to-be BiL is an RAF pilot, but he didn't need to tell us as we already knew when we met him!

I don't think I've ever met an ex-Marine who wasn't a total wanker though. 😬

Best Christmas film ever!
(Awaits Fluffy to tell me its die hard). 😁

It is Die Hard. But Love Actually is one of my favourites!

DH is ex-RAF (logi, not a pilot) and BIL is ex-RM so I feel qualified to speak disparagingly about both 😜

My SiL is something in the RAF. Maybe logistics. Deffo computer / ground-based! She's been in the Falklands for the last few months.

In didn’t like the movie because I can’t stand those smug actors (but good bit was Billy Bob Thornton my crush 😂)
