A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Mmn. The DT is reporting that Wes Streeting 'said he would fight the next election on a mandate to rejoin the EU'.

Unfortunately they also report that Jean-Claude Juncker has said that '"Wounded" European countries would block Britain from rejoining.'

Nuthatch26 · 16/06/2026 12:24

Yes there are.
The example I gave was of problems being made up in order to exert pressure as a project approaches hand over, rather than problems occurring after completion. Some companies are really bad for it, and getting worse. Usually the same firms who bid too low in the first place.

I think I get it now. Invoices were being disputed on spurious grounds.

Don't want to trample on your toes @Nuthatch26 but this one was too good to miss

Al Carns speech, which followed Healeys, (which is what I was waiting for but which I missed after hitting my limit listening about Thames Water) was really very good today. Worth watching in full if you get the chance.

That’s very good 😄

I haven’t listened to any news or politics today but I’m glad those speeches were good

Not quite, but the threat of that further down the line if a smaller company doesn't jump through hoops to keep the MC on side. Some are very skilled at finding a gap in a paper trail that can be exploited for example. Others just take the piss to get works done for free.

Brilliant 😂😂
Don't be daft, no toes trampled. I'm spoiled for choice finding cartoons for the top of a thread. Starmer is the gift that keeps on giving for cartoonists. 😊

I missed the speeches. I like John Healey.
Just listened to Al Carns on yesterday's Daily T though. I've decided he's opportunistic and full of shit, with a massive ego.
Thats my official verdict on Al Carns 😂

That Russian black fleet tanker that was boarded and seized recently - what do you all think of the timing? Am I being cynical that this happened within days of Starmer being humiliated on defence by Healey and Carns?

Just seen the headlines that a Russian ship has fired a warning shot at a British yacht in the channel.

This is a US podcast from the Hoover Institute (Stanford/university of Chicago) has an interview with Ron Desantis, governor of Florida.

Very US in its view points but some good ideas should KB ever win.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 16/06/2026 18:26

Streeting’s self-destruction is a sight to behold. Only recently hyped as a very serious contender, then faced down by the most unpopular PM in history - a PM who at that very moment was being cut off at the knees by party and cabinet - then bottles it, then slinks off, now wants to show his political mettle by saying how iron-clad his public spending would be.

It’s all bollocks, obviously, as are Burnham’s dodgy and unreliable claims to principle and policy.

Labour now has three losers fighting in a cage. A fascinating spectacle, but a very, very unpleasant one for the country.

Nuthatch26 · 16/06/2026 18:29

Yep, and they're all men.
I think I've had my fill of male politicians.

Let me know what you think. Could just be me being grumpy as I was listening on my commute, and the motorway was closed.
Good for you delegated the dishes etc. Hope you feel better soon.

As DH said they've millions of boars, a huge problem with camel over breeding, kangaroos to deal with first. Australia is as batshit as the UK these days.

I assume it's because of the terrain in the mountains. But jeez, it's fucking appalling.

That excuse doesn't wash our Welsh farmers round up the wild ponies in the mountains annually. They're checked over by vets treated where necessary and returned.

Yes exactly. You'd put in a detailed invoice as requested. They'd query one charge and the whole invoice would be set aside. Some of the big companies do it too and we're talking about a lot of money.

It was a supposition, not fact. You'd have to check for yourself what the reason actually is.

Maybe too lazy to go into the mountains to round them up. I don't know. Whatever the excuse is, it's godawful as an idea.

Really pernicious. Terrible to bankrupt small companies through cash flow. Outrageous for small firms to float big firms.

Like @Nuthatch26 I haven't looked at politics today

However, I had a local networking thing and it was really sobering.

This takes place in the area next to mine, which is the area I tend to go to for going out - I don't go out often, but I go there

I would say it's a well off area.

Three out of the four local restaurants have closed in the last two months! One of them I knew about, one had a temporarily closed sign and the other one looked like it was doing a refit

The other thing that puzzled me, was the one that I like and I used to go to if I was going to go out to eat- they didn't seem to have put their prices up. We were discussing this at the networking thing, but somebody who knows the owner said that he was faced with people saying that if they're going to go out for a meal once a month they are going to look at the prices and the value very carefully.

they are normally very busy, even if I just go in on a random weeknight they are very busy. So I am quite surprised by this but some of their suppliers haven't been paid so they seem to have been doing badly for a long time I don't know. I can't get my head around it.

That's a big loss to the area and honestly, I see it as a pretty dire warning sign. It's been discussed at this networking group before that part of the problem now is anyone who's running a hospitality venue, particularly a pub, is competing with the fact that people want to stay at home. So maybe it's not that worrying - I can't really tell.

I hope the pubs will make money because of the football

Another thing that happened with a lady who is retiring came in to say bye. She lives in that nice area but she is so worried about her adult children and their economic future, she has decided to sell up and move in with her boyfriend. He lives in a flat in a not nice area, and she has a nice house in a nice area

I understand the downsizing thing but I am surprised that she doesn't want to at least get a flat in the nice area

Her comment was that they'll probably go out less and less and she thinks it's probably going to go unpleasant in the nice place

Sorry that was quite a waffle. I don't remember things feeling so economically depressing since I was a teenager, and it was the 90s recession, and I used to see very long queues at the Job Centre.
