Things you love, which most people hate!

As we have a thread about popular things we hate, I thought it might be fun to hear about the opposite.

Unpopular things that I think are great include:
Bagpipes
The deeply unfashionable Fairport Convention
Pickled gherkins/ onions/ beetroot/ cabbage!

I draw the line at pickled eggs. I was given one in error at the chippy once, and namely tried it. It was like trying to bite into a bouncy ball.

God

Most people don't hate God. We just don't believe he exists. There's a big difference.

I love living in remote, rural areas (I'm young, healthy, and I can drive, so I have no issues with getting around). A lot of people (family and friends included) think that I am insane, and do not understand how I can live in the "a* end of nowhere". They got scared looking at where I was moving to on Google Maps/Earth, because there is "nothing but greenery!" and, "Where's the nearest shop?" 😁

They would be horrified if I moved to the place that I aspire to, because Google Earth doesn't exist there, and there is only one shop within about 27 miles. Alternatively, they'd just chalk it up to me being weird again!

I was reminded of another thing that I love today, which shocks/horrifies a lot of people... and they say that they couldn't face it. I love being single! I enjoy my own company and space, and making my own way in the world, doing what I like... on my own! I do not need a partner when I am perfectly happy by myself!

Me too! More chance of me winning the Grand National on foot than there is of me being in a relationship again.

Off-topic, but that reminds me. I teach a child who spent the summer holidays last year with a broken foot. She sustained the injury while practising show-jumping... without the aid of her pony!!

I'm loving this thread. We get to rejoice in our self-professed weirdness, and there's no judgement. Lovely.

Staying at home for days or weeks or even months. Bliss!

Leaving my hair wet to dry naturally. Not used a hairdryer for 40 yrs.

Being on my own for 90% of my week.

Same! no hairdryer, love staying home for weeks at a time without having to talk to anyone.

When I am out, however, I do enjoy random one off convos with strangers at bus stops, in shops etc; so not totally asocial/anti social!

I’ve realised I’m a picky eater,

I didn’t quite realise I was, and thought I’d a wide range of tastes, until having dinner with some family recently and I said no thanks, I don’t like Yorkshire puddings, no I don’t like milk or anything with milk in it, oh no thanks I don’t like custard, no , not for me, I don’t like boiled potatoes, no no I don’t like beans, no I don’t like red cabbage sorry, all were in one 3 course meal. And my daughter said quietly, you’re a really picky eater mum, and I thought about it, and it was like a light bulb went on and I said yes I guess I am. Everyone was staring like they just realised it too.

I’ve endless list of stuff I don’t like. I do however like pickled eggs.😂

@Notsosweetcaroline I wonder if that’s you’re not a picky eater but rather you just don’t like British food? That’s a genuine question BTW. Do you prefer other countries’ cuisines or foods that are spicier?

Rubyupbeat · 04/06/2026 10:31

I love the smell of cannabis, I'm not a user of it. All of my friends hate the smell so much.

Same!....silence is golden.....I find sometimes often that even having the TV or radio on is irritating and find absolute quiet peaceful and healing....
But then, yes, can talk the hind legs off a donkey with a close friend or random stranger😂...maybe that's why I need the peace and quiet to balance it out?🤔

I do however like a quick blast with the hairdryer on my roots otherwise my hair looks limp/flat🤦🏻‍♀️

What does that have to do with it? We were all babies and children once.

It doesn’t mean that everyone likes babies or children.

Not liking something is very different to hating it though.

Anarchy99 · 02/06/2026 23:20

And they say it like it’s a ‘gotcha’ 🙄

Not at all. There are things I don’t like, but don’t actively hate. Hate is a very strong emotion for something we all start as.
