Things you love, which most people hate!

As we have a thread about popular things we hate, I thought it might be fun to hear about the opposite.

Unpopular things that I think are great include:
Bagpipes
The deeply unfashionable Fairport Convention
Pickled gherkins/ onions/ beetroot/ cabbage!

I draw the line at pickled eggs. I was given one in error at the chippy once, and namely tried it. It was like trying to bite into a bouncy ball.

I also think bras are great.

I nearly started a thread the other day to ask if I was the only person who doesn't look forward to taking off her bra at the end of the day. Am much more comfortable with boobs properly supported than not!

ScruffMuffin · 30/05/2026 21:34

Snap! Much more comfortable wearing one.

Also like Parma Violets.

January
The nights drawing in, when I’ll sing, “Hello darkness my old friend” with joy in my heart
Rain, and grey overcast days

Going to church each Sunday and seeing our motley crew lining up for Holy Communion, all ages, ethnicities, and eccentricities! The children at the end from Sunday school with their works of art to show the Vicar at the altar. The sense of God

Silence and having the house to myself

quirkychick · 30/05/2026 21:45

Also agree with bras - if it's uncomfortable it needs replacing. I'm generally amazed how many people put on "comfy" clothes at home, are their other clothes uncomfortable?

Love marzipan.

FKAT · 30/05/2026 21:49

This is a specific MN hate but football. I love football in general and Man U specifically.

There are some MNers on another thread who find it a personal affront to their sensibilities that Cristiano Ronaldo is the most recognised person in the world.

ruethewhirl · 30/05/2026 21:53

Glitter on Christmas cards/decorations.
Christmas lasting till the 6th of January and the decorations staying up till then.
Strong colours on walls (begone, magnolia! JMHO of course.)
Wearing heels (not that my back/hip can take it any more 😩) and make-up.
Having spiritual beliefs.
Sitting in full sun (within reason).
Solitude.

ScruffMuffin · 30/05/2026 21:57

This is turning out to.be a joyful thread.

Seagulls! They are the sassiest birds ever. I love their struts, how they always look clean and how sharp their features are. I saw a baby seagull yesterday, and even that looked angry.

I really like seagulls I’m sure most people hate them. I bought myself a soft toy seagull to put on my bed and I’m in my 50’s.
i really like fish paste think the brand is Shiphams never known anyone else to like it. Music wise I really like The Smiths and The Cure - again never met anyone that likes them.
I love driving and I really love washing my car by hand. Find it massively therapeutic

Don’t worry, op, you’re not alone. I like Shippam’s pastes and always have a few in the cupboard. I also love The Cure - Robert Smith is one of my favourite people in the whole world - and I’m still fond of the Smiths despite Morrissey turning into an unlikable gammon arsehole.
You’re on your own with the driving, though. I’ll do it, but nothing will make me like it.

Brownpuppy · 30/05/2026 22:29

Wet dog smell (well, mine!)

I adore this thread!

Far too many things to list but the ones that instantly spring to mind are:

  1. Getting into a cold bed in the winter. If I get into bed and start shivering I love it! 🤷‍♀️
  2. Columbo (TV Detective)
  3. Duty Free (Sitcom from the 80s)
  4. Waking up at 2am to catch an early morning flight
  5. Writing
  6. Sending and receiving handwritten post
  7. The work of Frank Capra
  8. Harp music
  9. Funny Words/Word Games
10. Bringing a stone/rock home from everywhere I've been to abroad 11. Quirks

There are so many things that I love that other people hate!

Oilwillhelp · 30/05/2026 22:44

Rats. All rodents really but especially Rats

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 30/05/2026 22:59

Lots of food ones for me: mushrooms, courgettes, Brussels sprouts, peppers. In fact I enjoy most vegetables.
Green tea or herbal teas
I also love the nuttiness of soya milk and prefer it to cow’s milk.

Reading this so far, you might think I was vegan but I am in fact omnivorous.
Pickled herring, Scandinavian style. And the salmon paste that someone mentioned up thread.

Non-food: spiders, rodents, worms, snakes. None of these bother me. I go out of my way to save spiders by going around them when I’m vacuuming.

Things with numbers. Spreadsheets, graphs, charts & analysing data.

I also like clothing that hugs the body rather than loose. So even if I wear a loose flowing top, I will wear a stretchy vest top underneath.

Yellowpapersun · 30/05/2026 23:09

I love.....
Pickled onions, gherkins and cauliflower.
Progressive rock.
Bagpipes.
God.

pinkpony88 · 30/05/2026 23:09

Storms
beetroot
coffee creams
silence

Psisos · 30/05/2026 23:36

Cold weather
Doing tax calculations
Buses
Ugly shoes
Barrel leg jeans
Men! (very un-Mumsnet)

EvelynBeatrice · 30/05/2026 23:37

Department stores.
children's chalk markings or drawings on pavement
Striking up conversations with random strangers in queues, bus, airport. Had honour of hearing a venerable old lady’s life story unexpectedly one sunny Saturday when happened to sit next to each other on riverside bench.
Hymns
Weather - like all sorts and the British variety.

Vodkamartini3olives · 30/05/2026 23:43

Baby showers and bachelorette parties.

January & February. They're my favourite months. I love the fact it's acceptable to hide away.

Like PPs, I also love pigeons. I love the cooing sound they make, the way they walk, their faces, their multi-coloured hues, and they're gentle little beasties.

I like getting up at about 4am and making tea when the rest of the world is sleeping!

I’ve realised I’m a picky eater,

I didn’t quite realise I was, and thought I’d a wide range of tastes, until having dinner with some family recently and I said no thanks, I don’t like Yorkshire puddings, no I don’t like milk or anything with milk in it, oh no thanks I don’t like custard, no , not for me, I don’t like boiled potatoes, no no I don’t like beans, no I don’t like red cabbage sorry, all were in one 3 course meal. And my daughter said quietly, you’re a really picky eater mum, and I thought about it, and it was like a light bulb went on and I said yes I guess I am. Everyone was staring like they just realised it too.

I’ve endless list of stuff I don’t like. I do however like pickled eggs.😂

This is me I always thought I ate a wide variety of food but all my family call me a picky eater!
I don’t like milk, tea, nuts, anything spicy (including kfc😀) Any bread with bits in, orange juice with bits, kale, rocket lettuce. any form of curry even korma , anything sweet and savoury in the same meal, garlic, olives and a lot more😀
I’ve never written that down before. I so am a picky eater!
My dd(26) loves food ,will try anything and experiments with different foods and tastes in her cooking.
My ds(23) however, like me, has a limited range of things he will eat Pizza and chicken nuggets are his favourite go to meals😀

Both given the same types of mealwhen growing up. Dd would always take a bite and often grew to enjoy a variety of food.
Ds would rarely attempt anything he hadn’t before ,
If I did manage it usually he wouldn’t be keen then he would say “I tried ihat once and didn’t like it “ even years later.
i read once that some people are a “supertaster” but can’t remember if that meant you loved nearly all food or if you limited range!

Yes I don’t like tea or orange juice with bits either, I don’t particularly like orange juice full stop or oranges, and defo not sweet and savoury in same meal ..

I’ve a whole list on top of my original one, like I don’t like fishy fish ie trout, coriander, marmalade, most jams, any spread other than real butter, tomato ketchup, runny eggs, it goes on,,

I recall as a child it being said I was a very picky, and a step mother who wouldn’t tolerate it, as I had to sit at the table till I finished, so to some extent I think it was resolved and I’ve managed to get to my 50s just eating and cooking what I like, and really not giving it any thought, and no one commenting. Until that meal,,then I thought my daughter maybe has a point and she’s the first person to say it since I was a child. 😱

Hephzibah64 · Yesterday 06:44

@Notsosweetcaroline
My Mum used to make us sit at the table until we’d eaten everything. I swore I would never do that to my kids ( Along with a lot of other stuff but that’s a different story😀)
I wonder if forced to eat things we dislike has made us picky eaters?
Though my ds is pickier than me. I’m guessing maybe he gets a lot of it from me . We are very very alike😀
