Things you love, which most people hate!

As we have a thread about popular things we hate, I thought it might be fun to hear about the opposite.

Unpopular things that I think are great include:
Bagpipes
The deeply unfashionable Fairport Convention
Pickled gherkins/ onions/ beetroot/ cabbage!

I draw the line at pickled eggs. I was given one in error at the chippy once, and namely tried it. It was like trying to bite into a bouncy ball.

Coffee creams, I wish they would put them back in selection boxes (although admittedly I have never known anyone else who likes them!)
Rainy days, they are cosy and comforting. Much prefer rain to hot weather.

I love coffee creams too. So that’s two of us. Perhaps we can persuade the chocolate manufacturers to make small boxes just for us?

Dandelions (and all 'weeds')
Gaming and gamers (my DP and I are both gamers. A bit lapsed now that we have DD but will get back to it some day. We both have good jobs and DP pulls his weight in the house and with DD)
Gherkins
Extreme weather and big snows etc. (not when people are hurt obviously, but experiencing the spectacle)

Hot hatches/boy racer cars- low down, spoilers, decals, double exhaust, loud brum brum noise 😂 (I’m a mum mid 40s with a responsible job)

Quoting myself because I can’t edit my post:

On MN: tattoos, being working class, Botox & filler (never my lips though).

Wearing trainers without socks. No invisible socks - that’s cheating!
Team building games and exercises.
Seeing and hearing children playing.
Drones: I fly one myself.
Being blindfolded for surprises - I love this, especially on my birthday.

At least 80%* of the adult population is obsessed with running!

  • I obviously made that stat up but honestly it feels like you can’t go more than 24 hours without someone talking about their run/next race/marathon training/park run. I don’t think it’s something that most people hate!

Sorry, I read that as things you hate that most people love. Ignore me

Water slides; the scarier, the better. I love the “space bowl” ones where you go round and round, and fall down a hole in the middle. Also the ones which are so dark, you can’t see a thing inside, especially if they have names like “black hole”. However, it did take me some nerve to go down “Devil’s Drop” in Paignton.

Also my favourite. When I was a child I assumed everyone loved them because my mum and I used to argue who got to eat them! My husband is genuinely appalled by this though and thinks it’s tantamount to brainwashing, but he likes white chocolate so his opinion counts for nothing.

scalt · Yesterday 22:23

I'm childfree by choice, but I do enjoy the company of children. I like holding babies, and I work and volunteer with children. I like the 6-10 year olds best.

Definitely discount his opinion - white chocolate isn’t even chocolate 🙈

To PPs...

Yes, Fairport are DEEPLY uncool! And absolutely brilliant.

We will probably go to Croppers for their 60th birthday bash. I stood for 11 hours so that I could get a place right in front of the stage for their 50th. I can't do that any more though!

I was a recorder teacher for years!

Bagpipes are gorgeous.

Don't like babies, but love children.

A water park is my idea of the best day out EVER! I went to school in Torbay, and was in Year 6 when the water park opened. They invited all the Year 6s in the bay to beta test it, so I went on the Devil's Drop then (twice). I've been back many times as an adult, but don't feel the need to go on that slide again!

Middle age.
Well there are bits about it I don't love, but on the whole I like it. After all those years of juggling work and family commitments and always being under pressure to live up to other people's expectations, I find getting older quite relaxing. People may care less about my opinions these days, but I have learned to barely care at all about what most people think about me. My DC are all now happy, well balanced adults whose company I enjoy but they don't need me in the same way as younger children do so I have way more time to do my own thing. And I have learned to say no thanks to things I don't want to do without being guilt ridden or feeling like I have to make up excuses. So what if I am carrying a few more pounds, have some wrinkles and grey hairs and don't wear fashionable clothes- I don't give a toss. I'm not a young woman any more and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. I'm still fit and active, in fact I will be leaving my 50s in better physical and mental health than I entered them. Ageing is not all bad!

ScruffMuffin · Yesterday 22:54

Agree with ageing, even though I have EDS and arthritis that don't seem to like it as much as I do. Currently 49 and not in peri yet. I am far more unashamedly me... unusual, frenetically busy, asocial and completely unfashionable! The EDS means I don't have any wrinkles yet, although I lost a child in February and my hair at the front started growing in grey that weekend. Also carrying a few excess pounds (well, stone) but planning to fix that.

Rollmop herrings
Black pudding
Anchovies
King Charles
Public speaking, I quite enjoy it
The rain in England

All these, except that I wouldn't elevate the monarchy to 'love' level.

I like gherkins but not opening the jar aside from the feeling of achievement when I manage it 🤣

I like pine furniture and shaker style kitchens. I like quirky secondhand things.
