Things you love, which most people hate!

As we have a thread about popular things we hate, I thought it might be fun to hear about the opposite.

Unpopular things that I think are great include:
Bagpipes
The deeply unfashionable Fairport Convention
Pickled gherkins/ onions/ beetroot/ cabbage!

I draw the line at pickled eggs. I was given one in error at the chippy once, and namely tried it. It was like trying to bite into a bouncy ball.

I love pickled anything.
Matcha too but only on its own, none of your strawberry or lavender bollocks.

Nitgel · 30/05/2026 17:31

Fairport convention are great. I recently saw Richard thompson in a small venue in Herts he was fabulous.

ScruffMuffin · 30/05/2026 17:34

Love Richard! Last saw him at Croppers a couple of years ago. I've seen Fairport 25 times, most recently in March.

I’ve realised I’m a picky eater,

I didn’t quite realise I was, and thought I’d a wide range of tastes, until having dinner with some family recently and I said no thanks, I don’t like Yorkshire puddings, no I don’t like milk or anything with milk in it, oh no thanks I don’t like custard, no , not for me, I don’t like boiled potatoes, no no I don’t like beans, no I don’t like red cabbage sorry, all were in one 3 course meal. And my daughter said quietly, you’re a really picky eater mum, and I thought about it, and it was like a light bulb went on and I said yes I guess I am. Everyone was staring like they just realised it too.

I’ve endless list of stuff I don’t like. I do however like pickled eggs.😂

AddictedToBooks · 30/05/2026 17:42

Totally with you on the pickled gherkins - love them!

With me it's laundry and housework in general.
Staying at home alone.
Pigeons, rats and squirrels and all other "vermin" (apart from most humans).
Spiders and insects

OneDreamyGreenMentor · 30/05/2026 17:42

Wind chimes, I have 5, don’t care if my neighbours are bothered by them.

Gaming - DP is a big gamer, supposedly men who play video games are awful but the 10+ men I know who are gamers couldn’t be better husband material.

Nuclear power - I’m a collector of radioactive items.

I adore pickled onions and beetroot but weirdly actual pickles are gross to me.

Edit to add on from the pp above me, I love rats, mice, snakes and moths, but spiders I draw a line at, they should be extinct in my opinion.

PeonyPassion · 30/05/2026 17:43

Really long wedding speeches

FlipthelidSid · 30/05/2026 17:43

I love everything pickled except pickled eggs too!

I hate beaches when it’s hot and sunny but love walking on them when it’s cold and windy!

ScruffMuffin · 30/05/2026 17:44

In my OP, I meant to say I GAMELY tried it! Oh well.

I love windchimes too - and I agree with you about gamers - I'm not a gamer but I'm married to one and yes, he is a wonderful and thoughtful husband and I'd rather he wind down by gaming in the next room so we can still chat than him being out drinking every night. Big plus is it means I can watch old reruns of Brookside on TV with no guilt.

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 30/05/2026 17:46

Rollmop herrings
Black pudding
Anchovies
King Charles
Public speaking, I quite enjoy it
The rain in England

SerendipityCat · 30/05/2026 17:46

Op, I’m a fellow lover of Fairport Convention and pickled things. I also have a decent collection of Richard & Linda Thompson’s music, and plenty of Richard’s solo stuff as well.
Talking about pickled things, I’m on the fence about Kimchi - I once accidentally dropped a jar in the supermarket and it stank the aisle out.

One of the bonuses of being with a gamer is having the best TV (along with consoles, monitors and speakers) on the market.
My DP won’t settle for any with low performance, it’s brilliant, our house is like a PC world.

ScruffMuffin · 30/05/2026 17:48

Glad others have heard of dear old Fairport. I feel like I know them now!

Not into the Royal family at all, but William is OK. Charles has grown on me.

Yes you're right. Our house is like that too and he has one of the bedrooms set up like a miniature museum of technology.
Another big plus is that if I don't fancy staying up and want to laze in bed to watch a movie, I can go up without feeling guilty about leaving him "alone"

Drivingselfmad · 30/05/2026 17:52

Agree re rollmop herrings and anchovies
Teaching
Teenagers (see above!)

GivingUpFinally · 30/05/2026 17:54

The happy squeals and laughter of children playing outdoors

FKAT · 30/05/2026 17:57

Black pudding
Haggis
Tony Blair

CurbsideProphet · 30/05/2026 17:58

My family love Fairport, funny for me to see them mentioned here as none of my friends have heard of them 😀

Based on the other thread I am an anomaly, as I love salted caramel ice cream. One scoop salted caramel with one scoop vanilla 👌🏻

ScruffMuffin · 30/05/2026 18:05

Lol, this thread has attracted Fairport's fan club! I did write for the new fans' biography of Sandy Denny.

I love songs like Everything I Do.... by Bryan Adams & My Heart Will Go On. Didn't care much for them when they were released. I'm even partial to a bit of Mmm Bob by Hanson. Hated it at the time. No idea what they're singing about though

HedgehogShoes · 30/05/2026 18:09

Great idea for a thread. Have to admit, I've not heard of Fairport. Will have to go Google.

Agree on gamer husbands. Mine is lovely and also has rich social life and does his share around the house

Yes to God and to going to church. I think the church is utterly marvellous. Ordinary people of different ages and backgrounds coming together each week to worship and to seek good for their wider community. Makes me want to sing hallelujah!

jackadoo1 · 30/05/2026 18:12

Oh I read it wrong haha I do NOT love matcha or Cats the musical 😆
