A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

The Telegraph this morning is stating a rise in property taxes is almost a given under Burnham. There will be a slew of articles like this pointing out the negatives about every contender in the leadership challenge, but the only certainty is nothing will improve for the UK whoever wins.

They’re such a mess. Ridiculous.

I’m not sure AB will win Makerfield, then what?

Edited

I'm not convinced he'll win either.
Presumably Rayner or Milliband will step up if a contest is triggered without Burnham on the pitch?

I guess but it’ll still take someone to trigger and so far they hide behind ‘I’ll run if there’s a contest’ thinking someone else will get the 81.

Maybe Streeting can if Burnham is out, I think many are waiting for the by-election. And then AR or EM join.

Certainly not the housing market. They already got hobbled by the will she-won't she, on the run up to the autumn budget and now another round this year. Nightmare.

So I suppose it depends on how many Labour MPs still want rid of Starmer if they can't have Burnham.

Stamp duty, business rates and council tax are specifically mentioned - and reportedly we already have the highest property taxes in the world.

I think the final batch of Mandelson files are released this week.

DancingFerret · 18/05/2026 09:47

This is such a busy thread - just over two weeks and we're on p.40 already.

Yes I heard that too. Also heard that they will be unsurvivable for Starmer.
Perhaps the govt will find a way to delay.

Omg, Lammy 😬. Every time he looks vacant on the front bench in pmqs (all the time) I wonder if he is trying to manifest a cervix to silence the doubters.

I miss the laugh react 😂😂😂

Andy Burnham is and will always be the biggest 'Conman' in Politics ! This, is despite there being a huge list of contenders. However, nobody gets close to him, it always amazes me who people are taken in by his 'bullshit' . The man's only principles are to look after himself and thus only politically makes statements which he thinks are popular, hence when he realised Makerfield was 63% leave he quickly backtracked. No doubt his pro EU stance was because he expected Jeff Smith to stand down in Withington and Didsbury, where his stance would be popular with all the Guardian reading wealthy Public Sector workers.

redange · 18/05/2026 10:08

How people are taken in by the Bullshit King of 'Culcheth' or not even the Cul-De Sac were he grew up !

redange · 18/05/2026 10:16

I can imagine Andy Burnham disappointment when his team kept being told on the Phone that nobody would stand down except Josh Simmons in Makerfield. Suddenly Andy looks at the 'statistics' and goes 'red' when he sees the number of Reform Voters. However, Andy has a cunning plan to suggest that he would much rather traipse Makerfield than have a social event and chinwag with like minded Socialists at the Metropolitan !

For god's sake will people wake up to the King of Hype' Andy Burnham.

@redange Agree. This by election might take the wind out of his sails.
I'm happy to report that he was wearing longer shorts this morning when he was photographed.

King of hype! 😂

It will be interesting to see if the supposed glow around Burnham flickers out in the next few weeks and months. He’ll have plenty of detractors and opponents in Labour at all levels who I’m sure will be happy to speak to journalists.

He blew it at the last Labour conference and there was a lot of sniping about him within the party, for example.
