A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

DH and I fell over The Absence of War on iPlayer. It's about the Labour party leadership during their unsuccessful campaign in the 1992 General Election.

I had trouble believing it wasn't new. It looks as if no 'lessons have been learned'.

Edit: loyal lurker here under a new name.

I honestly think they don't have a clue about actions and consequences. Mainly because they never ask the people who do know for advice before committing to lunatic ideas.

A Blairite, a Brownite, and a Corbynite walk into a bar.

”Good evening Mr Burnham” says the barman.

There’s been some good looks at past leadership bids on the radio and those that have worked and failed.

Evening 😁

I couldn't be arsed with politics again today. So fed up of Labour - all of them. Can't wait till we can kick them out.

A good piece in The Times today for those not familiar with GM or Andy Burnham. It explains what he is, and is not entitled to take credit for. I worked on a lot of the city ctr buildings. Also details the economic disparity between the city and outer towns of the region.

How much credit can Andy Burnham take for booming Manchester?

The city’s growth is outpacing the rest of the UK, but deprivation lies in many places beyond the skyscrapers and showbiz

Just watched first episode. We have a special interest because someone we knew was once undercover agent for customs. Knew it was hairy but to see it playing out on TV gave me goosebumps. The writer apparently interviewed many officers to get the stories. So 🤞 we get more series.

Gosh, I hope your friend's experience wasn't quite as dangerous. I suppose it must have been risky if an undercover officer was necessary though. Must be hard not being able to talk about it with friends and family.
Watching another one tonight. 😁

That’s a very interesting article. It confirms my suspicions that city (and probably borough) mayors have taken credit for things they had no real hand in. That applies to all of them, by the way, irrespective of party.

I’ve long thought that the newer mayors and the city halls are a waste of money. I bet London and Manchester would be no worse off if Livingstone, Johnson, Khan and Burnham had never had a job to fill. I certainly don’t believe that any significant transport authority is better run by a mayor.

Burnham looks to me like a smoke and mirrors politician. That joke upthread about three brands of Labour walking into a pub in the form of Burnham sums it up nicely.

justasking111 · 17/05/2026 20:36

Our police commissioners have never been heard of after their appointments.

That’s one Labour policy I do approve of: getting rid of these pointless crime commissioners.

I'm sure he'll try and claim credit for all of it during this campaign. The boom was well underway before Burnham's arrival. Cheap land, easy planning and outside investment. DH took full advantage of it when he started his business.
The trams are fantastic, but they don't go everywhere, and they have sped up the death of smaller town centres, including mine. Its cheaper for me to get the tram to the city than park in my local town. All the big name shops have long gone. Everything is city centre orientated now, and many of the outer towns feel completely desolate.
The article doesn't mention all the negative stuff associated with Burnham such as CAZ and the grooming gangs, but they still impact opinions and will be dragged up by Reform.

Having heard more about them all I dread any of them even more than I did before.

Upstartled · 18/05/2026 09:02

Burnham already inching away from his line on rejoining the EU. These things always make me laugh. AB trying to gather support from the party membership before he has secured his seat, in a pro-Brexit constituency - relying on Nandy to point out the bleeding obvious. It's hardly 4D chess, is it? Muppet.

But it does give everyone the opportunity to see that this is yet another labour front runner for whom principles are just the most useful tactic to be chopped and changed at leisure.

Very clever from Streeting though.

Lammy this morning saying that the cabinet will all be campaigning for AB in Makerfield, then in the next breath backing Starmer. Make it make sense?

Omg, Lammy 😬. Every time he looks vacant on the front bench in pmqs (all the time) I wonder if he is trying to manifest a cervix to silence the doubters.

Nuthatch26 · 18/05/2026 09:25

Conservative Sir Edward Leigh is calling for the tories to stand down in Makerfield, in exchange for Reform standing down for the tories in the upcoming by election in Aberdeen South.

Agree, but TBF most politicians - and nearly all the really ambitious ones - have a yoga teacher’s flexibility when it comes to principles.

Although my feeling is that Burnham will win the by-election, I do think Streeting is playing a bit of a blinder. He doesn’t need to go near Makerfield or run an openly anti-Burnham campaign, to sabotage Burnham. Just raising the EU will do. And even if Burnham does win the seat, after backtracking on being enthusiastically pro-EU, there will be plenty of ammunition for a leadership contest about Burnham being opportunistic and untrustworthy.

I saw jrm suggest the conservatives should stand down too. I know that these things do happen all the time but I'm not sure it's cricket

Same. I heard someone else say you need to keep the option open for voters and I agree with that. If they don’t want to spend much on campaigning they could use that lever.

That’s an easy one for the Tories. It won’t make any difference if they stand a candidate or not! So maintain dignity and put someone up.

Yeh, I hear you. I'm not comfortable with it, but I can see why it's being suggested. Not sure Kemi could get on board with that idea from her previous comments.
Looks like Restore will stand.
