A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

@Nonnaleone thank you

I'd forgotten about that

I know the scheme has helped in other countries, but I would be surprised if it makes a difference in the UK. I think the type of person who is dropping litter won't care about getting their deposit back.

tbh we are lucky in my area because the council always fight against fast food establishments so the numbers could be a lot worse

One other thing that worries me about Reform is they might reverse that.

But yeah, the massive commercial rubbish dumps, they are a huge worry and they are getting worse as they are such a target for the increasing corrupt activity in this country. Lots of money to be made.

Again, all adding up to that sense that no one has actually run the country for ages. In some ways I do feel bad for Labour because I think they are bearing the brunt of people actually realising that.

But then they also don't seem to have any ideas about how to fix it, or even any interest in fixing the things that affect people's daily lives.

I don't have much experience of other countries, and certainly no recent experience. My ex ex-boyfriend used to moan about the state of this country - he's got a lot of experience of other countries - I thought he was being silly, especially because he was a child technically when he lived in some of those countries - but now I'm starting to realise that he's possibly right.

The fact that we are horrendously overpopulated isn't helping but that's something I've been talking about for 30 years and people are just really upset when you mention it.

Morning. It has been a huge week. I think I have politics fatigue kicking in. Maybe that's the plan, just spin us all around so much that we are exhausted and apathetic?

Politics and hantavirus just to scare us. Total silence on Iran and the Straits of Harmuz. We're being played.

it would have been a very easy win for Labour led councils to clean up the bloody rubbish everywhere. Siddiq Khan should have done in, instead of moaning about Starmer.

If thew NHS won't treat you, won't refer you, you'll die. That's a very slow way to reduce the population though.

I've watched the Birmingham garbage issues it's not the retirees who are dumping their trash

. I've seen this when they arrive as day trippers to our tourist area, light up a BBQ cook their food, drink their soft drinks, then bugger off leaving bags of rubbish and a still hot BBQ burning.

The disposable BBQs are the worst.

Dangerous for pets, wildlife and children and a fire hazard.

Anyone who bans them has my vote.

This came up in conversation with someone I work with

She was saying how shocked she was to see signs in London saying "take your litter with you" - obviously I'm not going to be pushy with someone I work with, but I did ask exactly where it was and she just looked vague and said she can't remember

Anyway, a couple of people who are older than she is said that that used to be pretty normal. It's not my imagination is it? It did used to be normal.

She was annoyed because there were no little bins, she was an annoyed because the sign was up, I don't know how hard it is to just put your litter in a bag and take it home with you.

When those signs were up, we weren't living in this society where a carry around coffee is practically compulsory and people eat every five minutes - I'm quite big as it is goodness knows how big I would be if I was doing that too - so I admit it bugs me just in terms of the culture. I don't like people eating on trains. I appreciate on a longer journey you might need to, but I would actually like to see a no food rule across London transport.

Anyway, I digress. Listening to her felt like another example of the kind of goodwill that was squandered during lockdown. I don't think the public will take that well to any kind of "keep Britain tidy"campaign now.

it is a totally separate issue to the dumping of commercial waste of course. But talk of the deposit return scheme made me think of it. Disposable barbecues should definitely be banned, yes.

I don't know how other countries manage this. I haven't got much experience of anywhere except the US. People often come back from Scandinavian countries and tell me how lovely and clean it is. I wonder why that is. Though I see Sweden is being quite sensible with generating electricity from incinerating waste. That's just from my quick look online earlier.
