This came up in conversation with someone I work with
She was saying how shocked she was to see signs in London saying "take your litter with you" - obviously I'm not going to be pushy with someone I work with, but I did ask exactly where it was and she just looked vague and said she can't remember
Anyway, a couple of people who are older than she is said that that used to be pretty normal. It's not my imagination is it? It did used to be normal.
She was annoyed because there were no little bins, she was an annoyed because the sign was up, I don't know how hard it is to just put your litter in a bag and take it home with you.
When those signs were up, we weren't living in this society where a carry around coffee is practically compulsory and people eat every five minutes - I'm quite big as it is goodness knows how big I would be if I was doing that too - so I admit it bugs me just in terms of the culture. I don't like people eating on trains. I appreciate on a longer journey you might need to, but I would actually like to see a no food rule across London transport.
Anyway, I digress. Listening to her felt like another example of the kind of goodwill that was squandered during lockdown. I don't think the public will take that well to any kind of "keep Britain tidy"campaign now.
it is a totally separate issue to the dumping of commercial waste of course. But talk of the deposit return scheme made me think of it. Disposable barbecues should definitely be banned, yes.
I don't know how other countries manage this. I haven't got much experience of anywhere except the US. People often come back from Scandinavian countries and tell me how lovely and clean it is. I wonder why that is. Though I see Sweden is being quite sensible with generating electricity from incinerating waste. That's just from my quick look online earlier.
