“Whether you’re a military analyst or a political analyst, whether you’re in the Democratic or Republican party, there’s a reality here. Donald Trump has met the moment of truth. The kind of fictional life that he’s led and evoked over the last four or five decades has now been unmasked as a deadly drama. It’s going to cost the lives of so many people. It’s going to devastate the US economy and the regional economy. It’s going to set back America and its standing in the world. It’s a horrific moment.”
Larry Jacobs, director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota.

Heaven Obi-Wan Kenobi help us. You're our only hope.

Iranian President has said that 14M Iranians are ready to fight. Iranians are ready to die.

Spandauer · 07/04/2026 17:42

Off ramp or just rubbish?

Iran talks show glimmer of progress as Trump deadline looms.

Vance mentioned US having more powerful weapons that they haven't used yet in Iran. Implying that they could/might. Speculation that he was referring to the 22k GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB),

logicisall · 07/04/2026 17:55

American analyst says Trump wants to dominate the news cycle, and he will get this by using MOABs, while simultaneously working towards a peace deal. The hope is that the bombing of infrastructure will concentrate the Iranians on the need to give in, because it will take $$$$$$$$ and decades to rebuild Iran, post war.

Indian analyst obviously anti-American in tone and language. Iran is not going to give in.

We Brits are a little too insouciant (one could say insular to be grammatically, culturally and geographically correct in one go) when it comes to understanding the concept of a existential threat to our country. Something that other countries will never be able to explain.

I thought they only had one of them ?

I can't remember for sure, but I recall when he dropped one on Afghanistan they only had a couple. And there was something about the one they used being near it's "use by date".

With a heavy heart here is a new thread for later.

I don't think nukes are on the table but I am concerned, as Across said, that he's backed himself into a corner and so bombing Iranian infrastructure is very much still on the table.

Maybe the 🍊💩 will claim a last minute reluctant change of mind/postponement because Melania has begged him to think of the children...?

I don't think nukes are on the table, but I don't think they're actually off the table, either. At least not in his head.

I'm ashamed to admit that I have a LOT of ignorance on nuclear bombs. I'm not of a 'scientific mind' to start with, but especially wrt munitions, so a lot of what I have heard re 'targeted strikes' and 'dirty bombs' etc has sort of gone in one ear and out the other. I grew up with MAD being an immutable principle so always felt 'Oh that will never happen' as far as using nukes went. It's requiring a massive mental 'shift' for me to accept that it might. After all, who wants to give up absolute assurance for insecurity?

Yup. I don't know if it applies here to Iran, and to your comment, but there is the country v state thing. We have a country and a state. Two separate entities. But some places don't. For them it is the one entity. I struggle to get my head around it. But to threaten the government is a threat to the country, because same thing. If the state falls, so does the country.

I see the bad moon arising
I see trouble on the way
I see earthquakes and lightnin'
I see bad times today

Don't go around tonight
Well, it's bound to take your life
There's a bad moon on the rise

I hear hurricanes a-blowing
I know the end iscoming soon
I fear rivers overflowing
I hear the voice of rage and ruin

Hope you got your things together
Hope you are quite prepared to die
Looks like we're in for nasty weather
One eye is taken for an eye

(Prefacing with 'Luddite that I am....")

Are MOABs those 'ultra-percussion' bombs that destroy using sound waves?

I think I read they can do the same damage as a small nuke.

The U.S. military has approximately 20 MOAB bombs in its arsenal. They have spent about $314 million producing these bombs (Time)

Mother Of All Bombs. Massive. Get dropped from cargo planes. Thermobaric, I think. Massive boom, fire sucks 02 from the air, suffocating people. Devastating. Like mini nukes yup.

No, I'm not talking politics, and states. Just the fact that Britain has never had a neighbour that could just "walk in" whenever they feel like it. So the British culture as is just has no spaced for that as an anxiety for the population.

Meanwhile, across La Manche, there will be plenty of French people who have lived under an invader in living memory.

Iranians are closer to French (as an example) than British. However, sadly, the US not only inherited it's language from Britain. It also inherited that slight disconnect with other countries who are vulnerable to invasion.

Oh, ye Gods and little fishes. Just the thought of that is frightening.

I wonder if there is any talk about regulating them like nukes are (supposedly) regulated.

I can remember when neutron bombs were a thing.

And how can you forget the Johnny Cyclops Quark bomb ?

I just looked it up. They only made about 15 to 20. Blast radius of 1 mile. Explodes just above ground.

I remember he was all excited when he dropped one first term. No controls on it cos just a big bomb.

Should we close this out with music?

A little gallows humour

Edited

I was just thinking about that one!
Feeling guilty but humour is my coping mechanism.
