What's the first thread you clearly remember reading here?

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 22/02/2026 19:58

And how did it play out?
I must've read thousands of threads over the years must get a hobby but the first thread I have vivid memories of reading was someone complaining because she'd been invited round to her new friends house for a drink one evening but only got offered orange squash.

As far as I remember the general consensus was that she WNBU!

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway I am sure we can talk about this now. Gina Ford had a book on raising a child and she threatened to sue MN over the negative thread discussions about her book. We were banned from mentioning her name for a while. She became SWMNBN She Who Must Not Be Named instead.

I remember Riven's birth story and I think David Cameron and Sam visited her before he was prime minister to talk about disabled children and what services were not provided for them. Another thread about the tragic loss of a child to cancer who I think was 9 and the support MN women provided at the time.

All the London meetups when MN was small. The Christmas gifting threads that I took part in, river of sweetcorn and cutted up pear. I have been here since 2006 when I needed breastfeeding support and there was an incredible woman on here. The same with baby led weaning stuff.

I take most threads with a pinch of salt these days.

The little boy might have been Joseph. It was heartbreaking. THe OP was about him being a bit off balance and he turned out to have a brain tumour. People were sending 'splodges' of light for months in support, and he rallied and rallied but ultimately succumbed. I think about him (OP posted some pictures) and his family often.

ILiveForTheYadaYada · 23/02/2026 17:03

@SlightlyJaded You have just reminded me about Joseph. I think it was a girl though and the poster had Scottish in their name, it was just incredibly sad and what I loved about MN was the support, the posting, like you say, the "splodges" of light.

SilentBob · 23/02/2026 17:24

I was a member of another forum at the time so could be conflating the 2 but something is telling me I remember a poster contemplating selling a tattoo space on their body to raise money for something? Sanrio as a username maybe? And something to do with endometriosis?

ThatFairy · 23/02/2026 17:41

Lots of people talking about their DH. I asked, "What's a DH ?"

Mymanyellow · 23/02/2026 17:59

The first one I remember was one where a woman was being terrorised by people in the village , hanging Christmas decorations in her car etc.
8/9 years ago now.

Yeah I remember that too. People were running around the front of her house howling with torches or something. I remember reading it on Christmas Eve instead of doing a million other things.

I'm sure MN ended up revealing it was a troll.

OP posts:
Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 23/02/2026 18:28

The two I remember are the sinister Easter bonnet and “I’m Angela Hernandez” 😁

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 23/02/2026 18:34

One of my first was about a woman who worked in a nursery and shoved a garlic clove up her butt (worms maybe??? I can’t recall why) and the fall out from that. I laughed so hard I cried and never looked back. That must have been about 14 years ago. Mumsnet was so funny back then. I was regularly in tears of laughter.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 23/02/2026 18:37

‘He ate the fat balls’ was a particular favourite.

100% PENIS BEAKER! 😆

Can't BELIEVE it has been over 12 years since this thread!!! Feels like 5 or 6.

The OP said she was going to consider name changing for the penis beaker thread, but didn't ... But it was the only thread she ever posted on, so she clearly did name change before posting the penis beaker thread! 😆

Edited

I came over due to Penis Beaker

The Sistine chapel thread was favourite

My very earliest was the one with the elderly korean lady, I laughed and laughed till I couldn’t breathe!
I stayed for the fun bits, when we could send random Christmas presents to people in need, reading oddsocks updates, anyfuckers posts, those two that used do the patchwork quilting/knitting etc. I also used to peruse the posts asking for pigletjohn and felt my diy skills improved by osmosis!

I never really got involved in the bunfights, although I was definitely taken in by a troll or two

Same! Pretty sure it wasn’t my first cos I joined in 2000! OMG one of the funniest.

I also remember those posters. One of them famed for her amazing, straight talking relationship advice gave me the confidence to eventually leave a toxic marriage. It’s been life changing and I love her for that - an internet stranger just wanting to help.

Luckybonds · 23/02/2026 19:01

It was relatively recent - Pamela. I’ll never forget her. She posted about her illness and it was clear she was dying but some scumbag private oncologist persuaded her to leave her home and her mum and her son and travel to stay in hospital in London for chemo costing thousands of pounds. And by the time she was ready to hear that the hope she’d been given was just false and only benefitted the doctor, she was too sick to travel home and spend any meaningful time with her family. It was just so sad. Her husband updated the thread after her death. I think she got a lot of support from here.

ExpatInScotland? I still think of her sometimes and also MrsDevere who lost a daughter too

Someone actually did that (the tattoo thing) to raise money for an expedition to Mount Everest! Her name was Mollie Hughes and she wrote a great book about it. I don't think she had to actually get the tattoo though, they just gave her the money.

Not the first threads I read on MN but there were a couple of memorable ones:

a lady who found out her husband was having an affair and was going to turn up at his work (I think she also co-owned the company or something)

a lady who worked in a garage and was the only one not invited to a colleague's wedding

I remember the one where the Op ran through the living room topless shouting something silly make her husband laugh only he wasn't alone, he was talking to thier male neighbour, not only that but the neighbour lived opposite them and she babysat thier kids so she couldn't even try to avoid them!

She posted from the kitchen where she'd ran to after running through the living room, I think she wanted the ground to swallow her up and spit her out in Australia, I was crying laughing at that one!

pinkyredrose · 23/02/2026 19:53

As an aside, what happened to AnyFucker, did she leave MN does anyone know?

lljkk · 23/02/2026 20:02

Gina Ford raging.
Early individual posts I remember:
Aloha saying she was a snob about pvc windows; I could barely imagine being a snob about that.
Custardo saying she cut power cords to get her teens off their devices
Pie had... health issues? SPD?
Fiona2 had a relative with chronic illness, cystic fibrosis? Would sometimes mention it as aside.
Jimjams so sure her son had autism due to jabs.
Mears (midwife) saying it was ok to give an 8m old plain milk
Tiktok correcting anyone who gave breastfeeding advice that wasn't what she would say so then there was no point in saying anything on any thread asking for BF advice. Tiktok would just say whatever I said was wrong.
Lou33 being lovely.

The first thread I started made it on the trending page which made me nervous... it was about baby illness btw, nothing exciting!

Iirc the insurance covered it. And the treatment/care in Ireland had been non existent . Guess the hospital in London didn’t know how bad she was until she got there. I hope her family take comfort in knowing they/she did everything they could. But yes sad she was too sick to go home.

Somerville's post about dating a new man after losing her husband. What a lovely thread.

That was lovely and she was a lovely person too. We talked off board for quite some time then I just never heard from her again. I was thinking about her not that long ago.

Oh wow was she banned?! I remember get being temporarily blocked but didn't know she was totally banned .

She had a way with words that's for sure!

lurkingfromhome · 23/02/2026 21:20

Someone asking on Baby Names if she should name her baby 'Apricot'.

'No' was the MN consensus.

ILiveForTheYadaYada · 23/02/2026 21:34

@IAmKerplunk yes, it was Expat. Thank you. The thread really stuck with me. There have been so many over 20 years, luckily some made it into classics.
