What's the first thread you clearly remember reading here?

And how did it play out?
I must've read thousands of threads over the years must get a hobby but the first thread I have vivid memories of reading was someone complaining because she'd been invited round to her new friends house for a drink one evening but only got offered orange squash.

As far as I remember the general consensus was that she WNBU!

Vividly remember one started by Riven about not being granted respite care for her disabled child. It was very sad.
Also one by someone who found her husband pleasuring himself with cutlery. It turned out to be a joke but God it was hilarious! MN was a riot sometimes.

RosesAndHellebores · 22/02/2026 20:11

Two spring to mind. Both staryed by GetOrfMoiLand. One was about her 15 year kicking the skirtings over wearing a coat and the other was about when GetOrf was a teen and entertainment was kicking cans of PAL about the local supermarket.

I miss GetOrf.

About the Titanic sub going missing. I was waiting for a friend in the pub and I went online to see if there was any news and an MN thread on the topic came up. It was when they thought there had been some sounds detected - it was a moment of community really, knowing that other people cared and were concerned. I think about that poor kid onboard the most.

Scottishbychoice · 22/02/2026 20:15

I don't know whether it was my first, but certainly very early on, I read a thread on here by a woman who had recently given birth to twins finding out her Doctor husband was embroiled in an affair with a work colleague.
One of the horrible things about it was that prior to the birth she had started a thread in the baby names board asking about suggestions for names for her soon to be born babies. A thread full of joy and anticipation. And yet weeks later she was posting about her devastation on discovering totally unexpectedly her H's affair.
The sadness of that thread has never left me

Hilllbillbilly · 22/02/2026 20:18

It was a thread about applying for health visitor training and waiting to see if posters had been accepted.

HeddaGarbled · 22/02/2026 20:23

Lemon Drizzle!

Someone I know sent me the link and I was hooked.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 22/02/2026 20:30

It was the infamous Penis Beaker. A lot of people were very bemused by the very idea of a Penis Beaker, and I think that it crashed MN due to the amount of traffic that day.

Oh those Lemon Drizzle threads were things of beauty.
Only trouble is the OPs descriptions have ruined that cake for me ever since.

100% PENIS BEAKER! 😆

Can't BELIEVE it has been over 12 years since this thread!!! Feels like 5 or 6.

The OP said she was going to consider name changing for the penis beaker thread, but didn't ... But it was the only thread she ever posted on, so she clearly did name change before posting the penis beaker thread! 😆

I came to Mumsnet because of the She Who Must Not Be Named threatened lawsuit so probably read a thread about that.

But the first threads I truly remember were the Moldies scandal threads! Oh I was agog for days, just before Christmas. It was addictive like nothing else.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 22/02/2026 20:34

Moldies I think. I remember riven, getorf, reality. Wonder if any are still around under name changes

daysofpearlyspencer · 22/02/2026 20:35

Inadvertently wandered on to FWR and found out that tge Labour party had made a teenage boy the women's officer

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 22/02/2026 20:36

I was here at the time of penis beaker but somehow managed to miss it. Everyone used to quote it as a way of proving they were a genuine OG poster, so I had to Google in eventually!

Remember the penis beaker well 🤣🤣

troutfish · 22/02/2026 20:37

Thug cat thread - loved that!

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 22/02/2026 20:38

Someone had a salt lamp, and had licked it, and wanted to know if anyone else had licked their salt lamp.

Upstartled · 22/02/2026 20:39

Yes, I came for a nosie from Netmums after the SWMNBN threatened to sue MN for libel.

hollytheheroic · 22/02/2026 20:41

Somerville's post about dating a new man after losing her husband. What a lovely thread.

ThisAutumnTown · 22/02/2026 20:41

The first one when I remember (after coming out of the conception and pregnancy boards) was of a woman who was horrifically abused by her husband and she wrote down a list of reasons she should leave him. He found her list, ripped it up and made her eat the paper in front of his parents.
His parents knew about the abuse but told her she must have pushed him into it as he’s not like that.

I often think about her and hope she’s ok.

Timeforaglassofwine · 22/02/2026 20:41

Ooh, the first I remember was that the op was complaining her 20yo dd's 20yo bf wasn't really to settle down in the relationship. I suggested (how dare I) that he was too young to settle down, and the virtual pitchforks came out 🤣🤣

Who is SWMNBN?

franke · 22/02/2026 20:43

Wig and Robe. Also a thread about a regular poster who was in or near Phuket at the time of the Tsunami - she and her family were OK it turned out.

LOL, and if you had said it's cool for them to get married (at 20) people would have said 'don't be ridiculous. They are too young!' 😆

Needmoresleep89 · 22/02/2026 20:45

The first thread I remember was a poster kicking off on AIBU that her reception aged ds had been excluded from the nativity. Turned out she’d asked for him to be removed from religious education but of course she didn’t mean the nativity! I was hooked

Who is SWMNBN?

A well known child development author. Same surname as a car make.
