What's the first thread you clearly remember reading here?

And how did it play out?
I must've read thousands of threads over the years must get a hobby but the first thread I have vivid memories of reading was someone complaining because she'd been invited round to her new friends house for a drink one evening but only got offered orange squash.

As far as I remember the general consensus was that she WNBU!

It's weird because I am really bad with names in real life but I can remember loads of MN names from 15 years ago!

TheUsualChaos · 22/02/2026 23:27

The fatballs thread is the first one I thought of as well. I read it while I was up in the night breastfeeding DD and it made me laugh so much. All the funny threads on MN back got me through those days.

I also remember a heartbreaking thread from a posters daughter with the news she'd passed away from cancer. The lady had been a foster carer and there was a thread she started about caring for a newborn withdrawing from drugs. Both harrowing and heartwarming.

I vividly remember the drug dependant baby thread, again I think it was one of the early ones I read here. That baby will be a teenager now I think.

An 18 year old posting. She said she was at school, in the sixth form, and had a three year old in the nursery of the same school. She also had a sister there, in the primary school part. She was cross because the school wouldn’t let her have her school photo taken with her own three year old, they would only allow the primary school sister.

Twas bolleaux.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 22/02/2026 23:31

Sad one: OJ and Steve

also multiple threads about parent and child parking, I found it amazing that most posters replied that anyone could park in them although the OPs of the threads could get very intense.

IAmKerplunk · 22/02/2026 23:32

The op moaning that the nanny had used dried pasta instead of making it fresh 😂

I wondered when Cancel the Cheque would pop up. Even now it irritates a bit that we never found out if the OP did cancel it, not what the CF B&G's reaction was. Not that I was over invested much.

She did cancel it quite early in the thread I think, and the ‘cancel the cheque’ comments just kept on coming, days and days later.

The very first thread I remember was a poster called Rindercella and her thread about her husband's illness. Her posts were so eloquent and so sad.

I also remember Chaos' multiple duplicate posts!

And also ‘I am with0ut the f0urth v0wel’ 😂

OSupergran · 22/02/2026 23:35

There are some that stick in my mind despite being fairly innocuous as I'd never read threads like these before MN.

A long-term poster, who I think has had their posts deleted, was thinking of leaving her useless husband. Username was something like overthehillandroundthecorner. Would love to know how she is.

Another long-term poster who had discovered husband's affair - possibly while he was in hospital after a car crash? Username i think got changed on all posts but was a fairly regular poster before that - Euphemia or similar. Again, would love to know how she is.

Possibly not as long ago as those but a lovely lady who had a crush on a colleague and it was possibly reciprocated. They went to a Christmas do but I think she got worried about the thread and after lots of updates suddenly stopped. If you're reading, please consider letting us know how you are?!

One about a friend who became a CF lodger and it involved a coat somehow.
It went on for many pages and everyone was agog for what happened and then it just stopped.
A lot of people were really annoyed and MNHQ confirmed the OP was a long time member.

Wasn’t that about the op being annoyed a friend hadn’t returned a coat that had sentimental value only it turned out to be a replacement coat or something?

Oh I remember that. Didn't the coat get damaged or stolen or something. It was a bizarre thread and I can understand why some people called fake.

I just looked it up to settle my own curiosity and the last update from the OP was that she was going to the bank the next day to cancel it. Followed by 3,000 "cancel the cheque" posts from people piling on.

Also it was nearly ten years ago😮.

Penis beaker. But then I came on and read a lot about fertility and miscarriage and learned the awful ‘BD’ slang. That’s when I joined.

CookingFatCat · 22/02/2026 23:44

Mine was about a SuperSoaker? I only came looking for nap advice and 17 years on I’m still here. 🤷‍♀️

Don't think so.
The friend had become a lodger with OP and was being increasingly CF.

I first came on here when my dd was a baby (she has just turned 23!) looking for advice on a skiing holiday.

One of the first threads I really remember getting invested in was the Support for Spook thread. (Her H had been cheating on her).

I remember support for Spook too! And one about a developing love affair with a colleague nicknamed “Rumpled” (was that true? I remember it involved a long walk in the snow to a meeting that seemed slightly unfeasable?)

SlightlyJaded · 22/02/2026 23:47

I couldn't say which was first as i think I read them in quick succession, but Moldies, Cheating DP and the Penguin Enclosure and a some of the Peddlers threads. Later classics like Cutted Up Pear and Lemon Drizzle did actually make me actually cry with laughter.

Remember SWMNBN, Rivern, Rindercella and so many posters who managed to be joyful in the face of terrible family circumstances. I remember lovely EMIN and drooling over a picture LaQueen posted of her house and being annoyed when ScottishMummy disappeared. Also remember COD and lots of the Moldies and the drama and flouncing that ensued.

SlightlyJaded · 22/02/2026 23:48

Oh and GabbyLogon and his/her MENTAL posts

Shinyandnew1 · 22/02/2026 23:50

The first one I remember was years ago-maybe 2008? It was a woman who had been widowed, but a relative (step son?) was demanding she sign her house over to him and his mum was pressurising her to do so as well. It was very fast moving and he was at the door as she was posting. Was it bollocks?!

IAmKerplunk · 22/02/2026 23:50

I’m still a fan of <creepy wee brackets>

I was here for the Liz Jones at a party with cocaine one. That was funny.

Oh yes, I remember that one.

2ndtimearoundok · 22/02/2026 23:58

I remember Pom bears anyone? I remember reading it in real time and laughing my head off…

HowAmIGoingToBeAnOptimistAboutThis · 23/02/2026 00:12

So many that have already been mentioned - is that you Paul was an absolute classic that had me in stitches. But - and I don't remember exactly what it started as - but it was about farting. I remember desperately trying not to laugh out loud on the bus home from work. Probably about 15 years ago? MN used to be the funniest place.
