What's the first thread you clearly remember reading here?

And how did it play out?
I must've read thousands of threads over the years must get a hobby but the first thread I have vivid memories of reading was someone complaining because she'd been invited round to her new friends house for a drink one evening but only got offered orange squash.

As far as I remember the general consensus was that she WNBU!

A well known child development author. Same surname as a car make.

No, I still can't get it. (Sorry,) Blush

A woman who had watched a guy in a pub buying more and more drinks for a woman who was already pissed. She wanted to know if she should report this and if so, to whom? That was 2014 or thereabouts.

ScoobyG · 22/02/2026 20:48

A post about a lady who's husband had gone out to cut the grass despite it raining, then she'd seen him crying in his car. She couldn't go out to speak to him/see what the problem was as her children had additional needs so had to be in with them. He denied he'd been crying or that it was raining. Then when she did go out for something the neighbour, a lady, spoke to her and told her to keep away from her family. Nothing answered, everything implied, was likened by one poster to a Harlan Coben novel.

I came to Mumsnet because of the She Who Must Not Be Named threatened lawsuit so probably read a thread about that.

But the first threads I truly remember were the Moldies scandal threads! Oh I was agog for days, just before Christmas. It was addictive like nothing else.

I'd forgotten about SWMNBN!

WhoStoleAllTheUserNames · 22/02/2026 20:52

Zeebrugge story. I would have stumbled across mumsnet when looking for some baby related advice in 2010 but that’s the first one I remember.

My spidey senses were not yet well honed and it took me a while to realise it was made up.

The first thread I remember was a poster kicking off on AIBU that her reception aged ds had been excluded from the nativity. Turned out she’d asked for him to be removed from religious education but of course she didn’t mean the nativity! I was hooked

The one Christmas thread I always remember is a poster with a really overbearing mil who was hosting both families on her babies first Christmas day.

The OPs parents decided to take OP, her DH and baby out for a meal on Christmas Eve and nightmare ils kicked off because they weren't invited. OK suspected they'd turn up anyway and MN convinced her to switch venues and not tell them. OP did, ILs turned up at wrong place and a row ensued on Christmas day. It was quite sad as it sounded like the op had it tough. That baby would be a teenager now.

It was a post in classics…. Funny things children say…. I was living in Guildford, circa 2007 with my then boyfriend, no kids and absolutely shaking with silent laughter as I was reading it late at night in bed! I might have a look for it - we are married now, living in Reigate with two kids so I may have a different take on it!

Somerville's post about dating a new man after losing her husband. What a lovely thread.

Yes. Same for me, I was fairly recently widowed and it gave hope.

I don't know whether it was my first, but certainly very early on, I read a thread on here by a woman who had recently given birth to twins finding out her Doctor husband was embroiled in an affair with a work colleague.
One of the horrible things about it was that prior to the birth she had started a thread in the baby names board asking about suggestions for names for her soon to be born babies. A thread full of joy and anticipation. And yet weeks later she was posting about her devastation on discovering totally unexpectedly her H's affair.
The sadness of that thread has never left me

I remember this one too, although not my first, I think she was a Barrister? I thought of her for long time and hoped she was ok.

SixthWorstOption · 22/02/2026 21:00

I think it was on here - a post from a woman who's kid had peed on a double / king-sized duvet. She had put it in the bath, put the plug in and filled the bath with water to soak the duvet ovenight. In the morning she went back into the bathroom and was puzzled that the bath was empty. The duvet had soaked up all the water. The duvet now weighed about half a tonne, and she was posting frantically about how the hell she was going to move it. It must have been about 11 years ago, but I've never been able to find it again.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 22/02/2026 21:00

Anyone remember the poster who concocted a big story about how she didn't know she was pregnant until she gave birth. Went on for months with this story over multiple threads then shared a scan pic and everyone realised it was all made up. I think that was when I realised how far people can go with trolling.

Gina Ford if I remember rightly

Thank you. I still don't know who she is. Sorry! 😆

Must have been before my time. Thanks anyway. 😘

One by chickencuddle, they were escaping DV. Could never find her again

Some posts just stay with you. I remember someone posting after she'd been attacked by her husband. She posted a photo of her bruised face and MN sat with her as she built up to calling the police. Understandably she NCd afterwards but even now, ten plus years later I sometimes still wonder about them and hope they're ok.

Not sure if it was the first, but very early on I read ‘Fat balls’. I remember laughing out loud and I was hooked. I miss the old days of mumsnet.

SpecialAgentMaggieBell · 22/02/2026 21:12

I don’t remember the first thread but I did join around the time GF was popular and I remember not long after she sued so no one could talk about her anymore.

suchafunnybear · 22/02/2026 21:12

It was a thread about a joint birthday party involving a pirate bouncy castle. According to the OP the other mum was taking over and sidelining the OP's child.

Then the other mum started a thread saying the first OP was exaggerating and making things up.

I think everyone believed the other mum and there were multiple threads. Eventually it all got deleted.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 22/02/2026 21:13

Can’t quite recall but prob an aibu.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 22/02/2026 21:14

I was here for the Liz Jones at a party with cocaine one. That was funny.

HelenHywater · 22/02/2026 21:16

I first came on here when my dd was a baby (she has just turned 23!) looking for advice on a skiing holiday.

One of the first threads I really remember getting invested in was the Support for Spook thread. (Her H had been cheating on her).

Allaboutthecats · 22/02/2026 21:18

Mumsnet saved me during my miscarriage period (2012 to 2013) Many a funny hour spent on here.

Struggling to think of a good example though remember Eat Shit Derek saying they had started answering to Derek in the supermarket

Flower1976 · 22/02/2026 21:18

Mine too was the lady who had given birth to twins and then she found out about her husband’s affair. I still think about her and hope she is doing well.
