What's the first thread you clearly remember reading here?

And how did it play out?
I must've read thousands of threads over the years must get a hobby but the first thread I have vivid memories of reading was someone complaining because she'd been invited round to her new friends house for a drink one evening but only got offered orange squash.

As far as I remember the general consensus was that she WNBU!

The earliest things I can recall reading were a thread about a poster going on a date to a zoo and I think another poster was going to go along to check all was OK for her (or something like that, it was probably nearly 20 years ago). I also remember some threads by a poster who had an on-off relationship where there was DV. She had posted about her partner kicking off and then didn’t return for ages.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 22/02/2026 21:30

I remember another one of the early threads I read was someone having a long thread once about a CF somewhere in the north of England (before C.F. was even a thing) wanting her to alter a dress and then refusing to pay the OP for her work, so she refused to hand the dress over.

The CF sent her husband over to reclaim said dress and he turned up at the OPs house in his work overalls. Took the dress, paid and apologised to the OP then wished her "cheery bye".

Suddenly the thread erupted with people adamant that it was all bollocks and no man would wish someone cheery bye, and certainly not a Northener. And the OP maintaining that it was true.

Somerville's post about dating a new man after losing her husband. What a lovely thread.

Yes, this. It wasn't the first one I read, but one of the most memorable. She wrote so beautifully! I hope she is living a lovely life.

CoodleMoodle · 22/02/2026 21:35

It was a thread about the mad things people did with their PFB. My DD was about three weeks old at the time and it made me laugh AND made me realise that we weren't the only ones who freaked out over the tiniest of things.

I think it calmed me down, and I was never as PFB after reading it (except when it came to naps, I was still very on-edge about naps! But that was mostly sleep deprivation and desperation...).

Was it the one where the poster deliberately rubbed baby shampoo in their eyes to see it stung before they used it on their newborn?!

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta
I'm fairly certain it was this one (dates match up):
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/parenting/1981512-Flipping-freezing-sterilising-and-the-just-plain-ludicrous-what-daft-things-did-you-do-with-your-PFB?page=1

Testing baby shampoo in the eyes is on the first page - I think the poster had mentioned it on another thread, but that's where I first read it. The whole thing had me rolling with laughter and made me feel so much better about everything.

Vividly remember one started by Riven about not being granted respite care for her disabled child. It was very sad.
Also one by someone who found her husband pleasuring himself with cutlery. It turned out to be a joke but God it was hilarious! MN was a riot sometimes.

Riven is the first I really remember. I'd been here a couple of years before that, but that stuck. I hope they have the support they need now.

Whatwouldnanado · 22/02/2026 21:49

I remember fat balls, someone posting about a wax crayon in the tumble dryer, the T rex arms and another one about a woman leaving home with possessions on her bike. No idea what happened to her.

OSTMusTisNT · 22/02/2026 21:51

I first arrived at the dementia/elderly board via Google and stayed for the penis beaker.

I think it was already in classics by that time though.

Currently disillusioned with MN as I suspect >75% of the threads i read via 'active' are totally made up or journalists fishing.

BadSkiingMum · 22/02/2026 21:54

I was a member of another forum for parents and had just read a thread seeking Style and Beauty advice:

’My friend and I are going down the social club tonight for a few drinks, what should I wear?’

I then decided to give ‘Mumsnet’ a try and the very first thread I clicked on was also seeking Style and Beauty advice:

‘I am going to Buckingham Palace for my husband’s investiture, what should I wear?’

That sums it up quite nicely, I think!

ThereIsATInWater · 22/02/2026 21:54

"Cube of poo"

MrJumpyLegs · 22/02/2026 21:55

It was about 2010, a poster with a username including the word teacher, I think. Her parents were about to move to her home town and she really, really didn’t want them to. It turned out that she was processing the fact that they had abused her in some way, I don’t remember how. It was long running and distressing

SparklyBlueDress · 22/02/2026 22:00

A poster called something like cup of tea that had a disabled baby that was not expected to live. She did live for a year or so and then sadly died. The OPs love for her child shone through. I actually cried when I read that she had died

OtterlyAstounding · 22/02/2026 22:02

Penis beaker, back in 2013, which was how I originally found the site - it was shared on social media. I've lurked ever since, especially in FWR.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 22/02/2026 22:03

I think mine was garlic arse.

There was also one about a horrifically toxic family dynamic, which I found thoroughly shocking. The longer I spend on here the less shocked I am.

LuckyCharmz · 22/02/2026 22:13

I remember a funny one, a woman trying on a new swimming costume late at night, and then deciding it was a good time to put a surf board away in the loft that had been waiting on the landing for months. She got stuck/ wedged and if I recall, daughter called the fire brigade.

HumphreyCobblers · 22/02/2026 22:14

Mine was a breast feeding support thread - Hunkermunker and Venvedivicki. It was about the time of Mile for Maud. So many prolific posters whose names became very familiar, despite the fact I didn’t really post much. I remember loving how witty women were. A new poster called Boco popped up who was hilarious and wished I was as funny.

BendicksAddict · 22/02/2026 22:16

COD and her deliberate, dreadful spelling made me laugh in 2002, and I stayed

Isaidnoandnomeansno · 22/02/2026 22:18

I think one where the op had been invited for dinner and was given tinned tomato soup and macaroni cheese, then as she left the host’s husband pinched her bum. Also cutted up pear.

TheGirlWhoLived · 22/02/2026 22:19

My very earliest was the one with the elderly korean lady, I laughed and laughed till I couldn’t breathe!
I stayed for the fun bits, when we could send random Christmas presents to people in need, reading oddsocks updates, anyfuckers posts, those two that used do the patchwork quilting/knitting etc. I also used to peruse the posts asking for pigletjohn and felt my diy skills improved by osmosis!

I never really got involved in the bunfights, although I was definitely taken in by a troll or two

Silverbirchleaf · 22/02/2026 22:20

I don’t remember the first thread, but somehow found mn around 2012, as I got a lot of support from the cancer support thread (which I believe is still running). Possibly that’s how I found mn, by googling support for breast cancer. (Thank you to everyone who posted in that thread back then).

columnatedruinsdomino · 22/02/2026 22:25

Can’t remember the poster’s name but she wasn’t sure if her hamster had fallen into the stew that was simmering on the stove. Very funny

DanaScullysLegoHair · 22/02/2026 22:31

EKL but was here way before that. Nothing stands out though.

EKL was such a lovely thread and I've since re-read it 🙂

Edited for typo!

AddictedToTea · 22/02/2026 22:31

When I first strayed from the pregnancy boards, the thread I most vividly remember reading is a woman who was concerned her ex-husband was feeding her children badger road kill. It had me howling with laughter!
