Are you tired of the never-ending dismal weather?

I am. In West Yorkshire we've hardly seen any sunshine this year so far. It's been mainly low cloud, mist, fog, drizzle and persistent rain since early January. Last night, for a change, we had wet snow for about two hours so that was mildly exciting. I don't mind it being cold as such as it is winter, after all. But the greyness is so dispiriting. Where are the bright chilly days with blue sky and sunshine - with a hint of warmth?

Join me if you too are experiencing dull weather in your area.

It’s bloody awful. I’m in Cornwall and since Storm Bastard 4 weeks ago, we’ve had endless high winds, rain and weather warnings. No chance of rebuilding my fence as the ground is too wet, difficult to air the house out, as soon as you open a window, it’s heavy windy and rain.

I just hope the summer is ridiculously hot and sunny. Mind you, there’ll be threads on here with people whinging about it, just like we are now.

This, and I’m not far from you.

It’s absolutely relentless and awful. It’s really impacting my mood and day to day. How anyone can enjoy mud, grey skies and rain is beyond me. Are they misanthropists?!

Hallywally · 07/02/2026 14:22

the roads around the north west county where I live are horrendous- crumbling away with huge pots holes everywhere. I’m sure the constant rain is a contributory factor.

It’s not that I LOVE this weather. But it is what t is so I try and find things that I can enjoy within it. No point moping about it, just get outside and I feel better.

I don’t hate mud either, I have muck boots and a shower downstairs for the dog. It’s not the worst thing in the world world.

On the threads of people moaning about the summer, the posters must love days like this, because this IS winter. Days and days of grey skies, constant rain and dark for 18 hours a day. I don’t get the attraction.

Nobody’s shut away at home due to the weather, but it is utterly dire and makes life harder and less enjoyable. We are all vitamin D deficient, too sedentary. Relentless rain and mud make this worse.

I’m not trying to sell it as ideal weather! But I can’t change it so I just get on with it and try and enjoy what I can!

I don’t cope well with very hot weather (above 25C) but I also don’t hate summer. But I’m allowed to not love great and rain and also not very hot weather!

AnneElliott · 07/02/2026 15:48

Also hate this time of year. Luckily went to Tenerife at the end of Jan to get a week of sun.

Can’t wait for some blue sky. Don’t mind cold but the grey is so depressing

Well yes, so are we. We’re also having a moan which is allowed.

I wonder if a succession of low pressure systems is set in? The pressure locally has hardly exceeded 1000mb for weeks and the wind has mainly been from the eastern quadrant (brr).

According to the excellent Kernow Weather Team, the cold weather in the US has strengthened the jet stream, leading to an endless conveyor belt of depressions.

They also tell me it's been the wettest January since records began in Cornwall, although we've had an average amount of sun (that makes sense, we've had some sunny spells. What we haven't had this year is any dry overcast weather).

My oldest friend is gravely ill and pretty much housebound, but if it cleared up she would be able to sit outside in the garden. I can't bear the thought that this might be the last kind of weather she sees.

London had a brief respite yesterday. Was cold but bright. I'm very glad I took a long canal walk.

We don't have a car so mainly walk. January (and now February) has been abysmal. As was the most of December.

The only dry, bright spell we have had was typically over Christmas and NY when we were all off work and school and didn’t have to trudge about in it.

My DP is self employed and is currently working on an outside project, he hasn't managed a full 5 day week since the project began in late October!!!

Edited

Similar.
I've been waiting for a month to be able to do about 6 days' worth of outside work (needs to be dry). I managed one whole day about 3 weeks ago. And of course I won't get paid until I've done it, so I'm pretty skint right now.

1000StrawberryLollies · 07/02/2026 16:03

Yep. I'm in Cumbria, so it's par for the course really. It was a bit sunny this morning though! I went for a lovely run along the canal. I needed sunglasses to drive Shock

Playingvideogames · 07/02/2026 16:16

We’re on something like day 30 of rain and thick grey cloud. Our shed roof and ceramic garden pots have all been destroyed by wind. My planters have been upended. The kids park and dog walking field are flooded, there’s a lot of GoFundMes for destroyed local houses, and everything we do (we live semi rurally and in the SW, so beach, park, woods etc) are all off limits really unless for essential dog walks.

I think if you live in the city and have a somewhat ‘indoors’ lifestyle it’s manageable, but we don’t - we rely on being outside, and while I’m not at all allergic to a bit of rain, it’s like it just doesn’t know how to stop. It’s truly depressing.

It’s awful, I am demented with it. I went on Ryanair fare finder and have booked a trip to Spain to cheer me up!

I am in Spain currently. Wall to wall rain . Its miserable.

1000StrawberryLollies · 07/02/2026 16:26

We are off to Spain a week tomorrow, and the rainiest bit of Spain at that! Hoping we will be lucky with the weather...

@FoxRedPuppy

whats there to cope with in above 25 weather??!

igelkott2026 · 07/02/2026 17:03

Life is a bit stressful at the moment anyway and this weather is not helping. Wednesday was a bit nicer but it just rains All The Time.

Private jet flyers and other people who don't care about the climate can go to hell. Well they are, but sadly taking the rest of us with them.

I guess if you don't like hot sunny weather and never need to go out of the house you might prefer this!

Have you seen the weather in Spain? It’s pouring with rain and awful flooding!

Dandelionleaf · 07/02/2026 17:24

Yes. I feel like I've not been on a good walk since December! Feeling utterly depressed.

Soupdragon41 · 07/02/2026 17:25

It’s January, what do you expect. Curl up on the sofa with the fire on.

I don’t mind it, I’m dreading summer. I’ll see myself out. 🤣

Same! I'm a weirdo who loves winter and hates summer. I enjoy the quiet, don't mind rain, grey, dark afternoons!

APurpleSquirrel · 07/02/2026 17:37

Im in Somerset - it has rained every single day this year so far. There has been awful flooding locally & further afield. Everywhere is waterlogged. It’s really horrible. We usually get some cold dry weather but none of that since Christmas.

Poppy61 · 07/02/2026 17:39

A winter when the days are cold, frosty and sunny is to be enjoyed. A winter when it is very wet, warm and grey, is not.
