Things you 'should' feel guilty for but don't

I don't like my mother but she helps with childcare

Haha the bluntness of that made me laugh, OP. It's totally valid! We don't have to like people, even if/when we love them. As long as no one is being abusive or it's damaging anyone.

I should feel guilty because I am disabled and clearly, according to a shocking amount of people, I should just sit somewhere uselessly, not paying taxes and not offending anyones sensibilities til I die. Whilst using the barest of meagre necessities to survive until that point. And BEING GRATEFUL for those scraps.

But with my prognosis, I'll do whatever the fuck I can, and others can swallow their own judgement. Walk a mile on my shoes and all that.

TinaTwinkleToes · 29/01/2026 15:51

I should feel bad i avoid a nice but needy school mum but I just can't be arsed with her wanting me to run hers and her child's life

I should feel guilty for working full time as a mum of a toddler, and I don't feel a moments guilt. Also for choosing not to have a 2nd child.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/01/2026 15:54

Spending money (my money, that I can afford) on a blow dry subscription. It’s utterly frivolous but I don’t care.

YourJustOrca · 29/01/2026 15:56

Going on a ridiculous amount of foreign holidays each year.

Snorydog · 29/01/2026 15:58

Paying a huge amount for a membership of a fancy gym/spa… it’s the only thing that makes me want to go so fuck it…

That is awful i know you said you don't care but why would you inflict her on the children?

Nickyknackered · 29/01/2026 15:59

As a childminder, charging parents for food when the funding rate is higher for babies. Reason is, it drops as they get older and I need to charge a little bit to everyone rather than a lot to only the older ones.

Andnowshesatoddler · 29/01/2026 16:00

I often don't need the full length of after school club but I use it my child loves it and I am paying full wack for it.

ForLoveNotMoney · 29/01/2026 16:09

I work part time as a midwife and not full time because I get a UC top up as a single parent and I’d quickly burn out and I want to spend more time with my child.

I did work a high paying job full time for 15 years prior to this. I will return full time once son is older but for now I need this.

Same. I can't be arsed having another.

You're a midwife! Even if you work part time that's still amazing

I don't think there are any 'shoulds' about any of these. Guilt is a choice. I don't choose to feel it. I can't imagine thinking I'm supposed to feel guilty for working FT with a child, or about not wanting to be latched onto by someone needy. And spend your money on fancy gyms and blowdries if that makes you happy!

LaFidola · 29/01/2026 16:24

I don't properly sort my recycling. I just can't be bothered.

Nattalie18 · 29/01/2026 16:27

Buying frozen chopped onions, garlic, ginger, ready made mash etc. MIL is agasht - why would I do it when it’s so much cheaper to make it, cut it yourself?! Because I have two young kids and a full time job, and it makes my life easy, that’s why.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 29/01/2026 16:27

When I was 6 my sister was threatening to cut the head off my teddy and I burned her leg with a curling iron. It was intentional (I was trying to hurt her so she would give him back) but I didn’t realise how serious burning someone was. She has still got a scar and always says I should feel bad but I don’t because to me she was threatening the life of MugMug who was very much a living being to me. Also she’s 7 years older than me so I feel like she was just being horrible. Fuck around and find out I guess.

PottingForTot · 29/01/2026 16:28

Being a sahm of school aged dcs. I like having that time to myself and I don't want to give it up to work.

HelpMeGetThrough · 29/01/2026 16:31

I fuck off peanut butter jars into the bin.

I’m buggered if I’m going to spend ages cleaning those bloody things out.

Fodencat · 29/01/2026 16:31

Buying microwaveable, ready-made mashed potato. Life’s too short to be doing all that peeling plus it’s not 1956. Take short cuts where you can

I mainly only sort ‘dry’ recycling. If it needs rinsing, i also mostly cba most of the time as it also increases my water bill and is a waste of water.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/01/2026 16:31

Cake. I really like cake. I run 25 miles a week, cycle and do Pilates to keep my health and to watch my weight. But I still eat cake. If I ate less cake I could probably run less and take a day off the bike, but I'm not going to.

Echobelly · 29/01/2026 16:33

I never felt guilty at all for not making breastfeeding work with oldest DC. Or when either child went to nursery. Because parents shouldn't feel guilty about either of those.

Oh I just chuck empty bottles and milk cartons unwashed into the recycling. Empty cans in the kitchen bin and all food waste. I don’t use the caddy you’re supposed to. Too much faff

Smoppender · 29/01/2026 16:37

My mum's very socially isolated - a widow who can't get out because of disabilities and can't use refuses to learn to use the internet. I phone her once a week and visit twice a year. I should feel guilty that I don't make more effort. But I don't because she's a fucking horrible person.

I have a very well paid job, paid for by the taxpayer. I hardly do any work and use my contracted hours to do private consultancy work. I should feel guilty that I'm taking the piss. But I don't.
