Another person murdered by ICE

I’m in tears and shock at the brutality happening in broad daylight in the US. I’m a US citizen, emigrated to the UK for family reasons 12 years ago (now dual citizen), and I am just in disbelief at what’s happening. I was sick when I learned of Trump’s first election and gravely disappointed by the second one. But the sheer brutality of what’s happening in MN right now has really thrown me. I have friends and family there, in Chicago (where ICE raids were occurring in the autumn), in NY, and in California. I’m hearing that even worse things are happening in the Deep South but fewer observers and press to report on it. Posting here because I feel so lost.

Interesting Bluesky thread with photographic evidence of MAGAs repeatedly showing up to protests armed:

Yeah, interesting, isn't it?

As an aside, Sarah Longwell's brilliant. Well worth listening to her focus groups.

Thanks, I’ll look out for Sarah Longwell. I saw it when it was reposted by Heather Cox Richardson, who is keeping me sane at the moment. I live in a deep red state and the level of denial here makes me feel like I’m losing my marbles.

I'll check out Sarah Longwell too. I agree about Heather Cox Richardson. But it's upsetting seeing her admitting to how bad a situation we're now in. I really feel for you being in a red state.

Thanks. We’re in the city, which is at least purplish, and in a bubble of liberal friends, colleagues and school community. But then I make the mistake of looking at the comments on social media posts from local news stations and they’re hideous and just so fucking ignorant. I feel like I know more about the constitution and separation of powers just from helping my kids with their social studies homework than some of them do.

Oh god, I hear you on the social media posts. Whenever our governor posts, it immediately attracts the 'laughing emoji' twats and pages of moronic comments.

Why are people trying to defend illegal immigrants? Because many of them are asylum seekers and ICE isn't even trying to figure out why people are or are not documented. Because they are valued members of their society. Because they are peoples' neighbours, friends, schoolmates, employees and employers. Because nobody deserves to be shot in the street, regardless of their immigration status. Because ICE is killing people indiscriminately, regardless of one's immigration status or citizenship. Because America is a nation built by immigrants.

Today our state governor - usually a typical republican doofus - has released a bi-partisan statement with the governor of Maryland basically condemning ICE’s actions and calling for accountability. Admittedly the bar is so low it’s practically in hell, but I’m kind of impressed and vaguely hopeful.

NotDonna · 27/01/2026 07:39

That does sound slightly hopeful @MrsFrumble
