Another person murdered by ICE

Mericanilondon · 24/01/2026 19:08

I’m in tears and shock at the brutality happening in broad daylight in the US. I’m a US citizen, emigrated to the UK for family reasons 12 years ago (now dual citizen), and I am just in disbelief at what’s happening. I was sick when I learned of Trump’s first election and gravely disappointed by the second one. But the sheer brutality of what’s happening in MN right now has really thrown me. I have friends and family there, in Chicago (where ICE raids were occurring in the autumn), in NY, and in California. I’m hearing that even worse things are happening in the Deep South but fewer observers and press to report on it. Posting here because I feel so lost.

I'm Irish. What has that poster written that is inaccurate? It seems to be pretty accurate.

For me, I think it's the lamentably ignorant and vacuous posts about the terrifying nature of the UK, it is straight out of the extreme right, Maga playbook, it's literally what Musk was whanging on about a few months ago wasn't it?

Hmm I don't think that the U.K. is a terrifying place to live. I would agree that news reports in Ireland about the U.K, tend to focus on the negative things. News reports tend to focus on things like: the negative issues caused by Brexit in the U.K, the high amounts of crime in the U.K, the rising cost of living in the U.K etc. However, that is just how the News is. The news reports negatively about many countries. I don't think any of us see the News as the whole picture about a country.

I wonder will ICE get worse after this, or will any efforts be made to reign them in a bit.

Depends. If Trump is deliberately using them to stir up trouble, then they may ramp things up even further. Time will tell.

Start a thread and we can discuss. It will save derailing this one.

And this might be a problem for Trump. Because eventually he will have to throw some of his goons under the bus. And when he does that, the whistleblowers will start to emerge.

He might have created a beast that can't be tamed.

The poster in question didn't get warned off about the UK from the news, they explained how it was friends from a European country they had moved to- how conveniently vague. Equally, Irish news reporting doesn't represent the rest of Europe, which is what this poster was suggesting. I have Danish family and work with people from other Scandinavian countries, they are not at all worried about living in the UK and they quite like the Brits. Unfortunately, Brexit was voted for by the idiots and if we vote in Reform then it just proves how we haven't learned a thing but we all know who will be sponsoring Farage and Posters sewing division on Mumsnet really do help the cause in deflecting from stopping the chaos he would cause a second time around. So yes, I am very cynical about such behaviour as it is straight out of the Maga playbook!

The whole thing is horrifying.
And this is what they do in daylight in public view. I dread to think what happens to those poor people who they take away and detain.

America is done. I think it’s only a matter of time until Trump cites the insurrection act and attempts to scupper the mid terms.

Rest in peace Alex Pretti - you should be alive today.

Perfect meme.

Has anyone thought to setup a crowdfunder for the ICE agents and their families that must be affected by this ? Because it's the only act of satire left to highlight this lunacy.

Oh, they already did it for the officer that shot Renee Good… There’s no limits to the depths they’ll sink to.

I was in Harrods when the IRA bomb went off 17/12/83. My exDH's ex partner and close friend was one of the six killed, she was a wife and a mother of a small boy. That has as little relevence to what is happening in the US as your transparent whataboutery. Kindly FO.

I’m so sorry that happened to you Flowers

I'm sure if your friends and family don't wave a gun around and threaten to kill the ICE agents, they'll be fine.

This man stepped in front of a woman and was pulled to the ground and held down by at least 6 other men and while being held down and restrained was then shot, and as he lay dying shot some more, literally held down by a group of men and then shot at point blank range.
What complete and utter cowards and power mad psychos these so called agents are.

Didn't a MET police officer murder a woman in the UK?

Don’t be an illegal immigrant, don’t get involved in the deportation of illegal immigrants.

Dunno, seems pretty simple to me.

You seem pretty simple to me.

Thedogscollar · 25/01/2026 19:25

This is what is happening in the USA right now.

The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears.
It was their final, most essential command. And if all the others accepted the lie which the party imposed if all the records told the same tale then the lie passed into history and became the truth.

George Orwell 1984.

Never in my lifetime did I think I'd be looking at this paragraph from such an iconic piece of literature and applying it to what is indeed happening in the USA the supposed Land of the Free.

DeepBlueDeer · 25/01/2026 19:40

Could any of the ICE defenders tell me why the administration are saying they'll withdraw or scale back ICE if local authorities hand over voting registration info?

Its almost as if ICE aren't there to enforce immigration laws but as a pretext for election subversion, wouldn't you say?

I agree. Despite the fact that the British have a lot to answer for, including their actions in Northern Ireland. (Although it didn’t justify the ITA (or Loyalist terrorist groups for that matter) targeting civilians.)

The thing is, though, what is there to say about the UK’s past actions? Apart from to agree that the actions of the British army’s actions in Northern Ireland were completely disgraceful. A lot of British people said as much at the time as well. And I haven’t seen any posts attempting to justify these atrocities, like Bloody Sunday.

And yes, there were many disgraceful acts that the British Empire was guilty of. But again, no one is saying otherwise, are they? Of course there were atrocities committed in our name and a lot of British people have expressed shame about them.

But what can we do about it now, apart from express sorrow that these things happened. We can’t go back in time and change anything.

And yes, there have been countries looking for independence from the UK (although not looking to leave the Commonwealth). Barbados cut ties with the UK Monarchy last year. Australia had a referendum, but voted not to become a republic. They’re not being prevented from doing so.

But none of this means that British posters on this thread shouldn’t be allowed to criticise the acts of ICE that are taking place now. It’s right to speak out against atrocities that are happening now, not in the past.

I always find it interesting which groups of people are deemed to be collectively responsible for the actions of others of the same nationality or (more often) race. It’s fascinating. I think I’ve worked out the rules but don’t want to derail by getting into it on this thread.

It’s like they’re caught in a stupidity loop, I’m surprised they don’t literally walk in circles too.
