Another person murdered by ICE

Mericanilondon · 24/01/2026 19:08

I’m in tears and shock at the brutality happening in broad daylight in the US. I’m a US citizen, emigrated to the UK for family reasons 12 years ago (now dual citizen), and I am just in disbelief at what’s happening. I was sick when I learned of Trump’s first election and gravely disappointed by the second one. But the sheer brutality of what’s happening in MN right now has really thrown me. I have friends and family there, in Chicago (where ICE raids were occurring in the autumn), in NY, and in California. I’m hearing that even worse things are happening in the Deep South but fewer observers and press to report on it. Posting here because I feel so lost.

Stupid and irrelevant. Posters are saying the US is unsafe because federal agents carrying guns are murdering civilians. Obviously the UK and US and many many other countries also have rapists. It’s a false equivalence.

Didn't a MET police officer murder a woman in the UK?

Surely you can't really be this thick and function in everyday life?

Just saw your pre-edited version. 😂

And what happened to him, hmmmm? Did he get defended by the PM and the Home Secretary? Or did he get jailed for decades?

Please start a thread about colonialism and the atrocities that the UK committed. I suspect many of us will be very happy to contribute.

So, do you have any feelings at all about the young man who was murdered by government sanctioned thugs in broad daylight on a street in Minneapolis? Because (checking title) it's the subject of this thread. You don't seem to have addressed that.

I have written a post about him actually.

And no, for the fifth time, I won't be starting another thread about it. I will be writing about it on THIS THREAD.

Lol. I'm laughing at the Brits on here who can't bear to be shown anything negative about their own country.

I have enjoyed addressing many British people's utter hypocrisy in the last few weeks.

Well then you just go right ahead, dearie. I'm sorry you're so lonely you need to behave like a toddler looking for any attention, even negative.

@malinta we are talking about events of this month not things that happened over 50 years ago.

What happened over 50 years ago?

The main troubles in Northern Ireland went on until 1998. That is 30 years ago. However there are still problems there to this day

You mentioned Sunday Bloody Sunday. Over 50 years ago.

Alex Pretti did not brandish gun, witnesses say in sworn testimony

Pair testify that Pretti did not hold weapon and was trying to help woman federal agents had shoved to the ground

Very interestingly the National Rifle Association has issued a statement condemning comments made by Trump’s administration officials.

Dabralor · 25/01/2026 10:52

The whole thing is horrifying.
And this is what they do in daylight in public view. I dread to think what happens to those poor people who they take away and detain.

America is done. I think it’s only a matter of time until Trump cites the insurrection act and attempts to scupper the mid terms.

Rest in peace Alex Pretti - you should be alive today.

Go to any museum, art gallery or historical site in Britain and you will see, written out before you the history of Britain warts and all.

I disagree. Any English person that I've spoken to, has told me that they were taught absolutely nothing in school about the U.K's history with Ireland.

Andouillette · 25/01/2026 10:55

malinta · 25/01/2026 09:11

I see your reaction deflects and takes zero accountability for what the U.K. have done in the past.

How dare you say it's funny. I worked on a peace project in Northern Ireland. I saw families cry about their family members being killed. I saw the devastation that happened.

If I ever raise the topic of Northern Ireland in England, the answer ALWAYS is 'no one gives a shit'. The lack of empathy you have demonstrated is also disgusting.

I was in Harrods when the IRA bomb went off 17/12/83. My exDH's ex partner and close friend was one of the six killed, she was a wife and a mother of a small boy. That has as little relevence to what is happening in the US as your transparent whataboutery. Kindly FO.

SerendipityJane · 25/01/2026 10:55

Has anyone thought to setup a crowdfunder for the ICE agents and their families that must be affected by this ? Because it's the only act of satire left to highlight this lunacy.

I'm from Bristol.
I was taught about the UK's history with Ireland at school and at home.
My uncle was an ambulanceman who was nearly killed by the bombs in Bristol in the 1970s.

Anyway. Back to the matter in hand. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2026/us/minneapolis-shooting-ice

No I won't kindly FO. The arrogance of some of the Brits on here.

You don't tell me what to do.

And by the way, killing anybody is absolutely disgusting.

The IRA were fighting back because of the British invasion into Northern Ireland.

Who started it? If the British hasn't invaded Ireland, then no one would have fought back. If the British hasn't invaded Ireland, the IRA never would have bombed England

People never get invaded, and think 'oh yes that's great. I'll just roll over'.

They start fighting back against it.

Invasion never works.

People use the word 'derailing' when its something that they don't like to read.

In this instance, people don't want to hear about the atrocities that the U.K. committed

So 'derailing' is a controlling word, and I don't listen to the word 'derailing'

I'm Irish living in the UK.

I am shocked that you use this thread to complain about British people calling out the behaviour of ICE and Trump. This is what we want - all people standing up against continuous hate and violence in order to move forward.

I have plenty to say about some British treatment of the Irish, but using this to somehow justify what Trump is doing is (another) new low.

The NYT has done some stellar work on these shootings, but I wish they had the balls to get rid of 'appear'

Videos analyzed by The New York Times appear to contradict federal accounts of the shooting. The man, an I.C.U. nurse, was an American citizen with no criminal record, the city police chief said.

Where did I ' justify' what Trump is doing.

Em I didn't anywhere, you completely made that up.

I said that what Trump's regime is doing, and ALSO what the U.K has done, are both terrible.

"Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says agents fired "defensive shots" after Pretti "reacted violently","

The man was on his knees, pepper sprayed and being kicked in the face by government agents when the first shot was fired. Why do the American government think people will believe their lies?

Because a significant percentage of them seem to want to roll over and have the government tell them what to think. After all, if it was a ‘domestic terrorist’ then they themselves are safe right?

I am fucking disgusted by Noem. That press conference was the most digusting thing I’ve seen in a long time.

Yes I have lived in Northern Ireland, for two years.

Have you not lived anywhere outside your home town? Why is that then?

Everyone I know - has lived in different countries. My best friend growing up, moved to Australia to be a nurse. One of my other friends is living in Canada.

I am laughing at you - who thinks that living in different countries - is a bad thing!
What a small town mentality.

I don't know what it is, maybe the parroting of the Maga view of the world, regurgitation of the BS about the hellish lives of UK residents, gangs runming amock, everytime we step out of our front doors we are attacked and we can't speak out about it as it is not just free speech but all speech is now illegal in the UK. Oh, that and your incorrigible lies!
