A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Surely he would have said something by now if he intended to stand? He isn't usually shy.
I've checked the local media, nothing.

I’d love to know how popular Andy felt today, I bet his phone was going off with calls. Maybe he was on the phone to Rayner / Khan / Powell / unions and declined Keir’s incoming ;

Upstartled · 24/01/2026 16:49

Unless he's been asked not to say anything until 5pm? Is that a thing? I'm supposed to be making dinner here and getting ready to go out, but I am dragging my heels waiting.

TheNuthatch · 24/01/2026 16:52

Just read that any other applicants have until midnight tomorrow to apply. Why does Burnham have a shorter deadline? Weird.

Maybe we won't hear anything until all applications are in?

His deadline today is just with the NEC to see if they'll give him the green light to make the application with the others by tomorrow night, I think. I wonder who they have for back-up?

EmeraldRoulette · 24/01/2026 16:58

I thought there was no announcement until tomorrow.

Unless he decides to announce at 5 pm -either way. but he's not under any obligation to do it I think till tomorrow.

apologies if I misunderstood. I'm not particularly interested in this one at the moment. The process is very cumbersome.

TheNuthatch · 24/01/2026 17:01

Ah ok, thanks.
I can't wrap my head around the way Labour operates as a party.

It’s how they operate as a government that’s the real worry.

Let see. Its not like Burnham to be coy.
If he wants to stand and is worried about a stitch-up to keep him out, I would have thought he'd be shouting from the rooftops.

Wowser get in

I had thought today it’d be really unusual for colleagues to back as those below did without a call first to confirm you’re standing

TheNuthatch · 24/01/2026 17:13

Sorry, Burnham has applied to stand more accurately.

Game on 😁

EmeraldRoulette · 24/01/2026 17:13

and he's in

I was actually thinking, would he want to take charge of the party now? Well, now I know!

Ooh, and now we find out whether the NEC has got the mettle to let Burnham play or if they think Starmer is too weak to hold off the challenge. Make your move.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Shame!

EasternStandard · 24/01/2026 17:19

They’ll let him run Rayner / Khan / Powell plus unions and backbenchers are too strong to oppose. And if they do the backlash would hurt politically.

Go on Andy game on 😬

Upstartled · 24/01/2026 17:31

😁

peacefulpeach · 24/01/2026 17:43

Looks like Khan told the Fabian Society 🤢 that he’ll support Burnham and campaign for him.. Writing on the wall innit, what with all that left of left wing support from their bread and butter Fabian folk..

Poor Keir he’ll never be as bright as Andy and he knows it. AB who got into Oxbridge first time as an undergrad, from a bog standard school in the NW. Back in the days when there was no contextual application massaging. And average old Keir who didn’t get in from his fancy school, and had to apply for a masters at Oxford for the kudos.

Will be interesting to see how this develops. Popcorn makes me cough so I’ll have 🍫 ..

TheNuthatch · 24/01/2026 17:44

So funny listening to Starmer's fans whining on the radio. 🤣🤣

Why do they like him so much? He's the most unpopular PM since records began, yet some want to keep him. Bonkers.

It's quite fun being in opposition 🍿 😁

Once you've sold all your principles to keep in step with the party's 14 u turns - there's probably a bit of sunk cost fallacy about their continuing loyalty.

Agreed. It doesn’t take long for that to happen within the Labour nasty party. Burnham is in for a wild ride!

He is!

Burnham was a crap minister, and he isn't popular as mayor in GM either. I think we'll end up with a Reform mayor.
Buckle up.
