A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Looking forward to seeing who Labour will put up….

Zack Polanski has changed his mind, wants to stay in London.
I think there will be an anti- Starmer vote. I pity the Labour candidate after this mess.

That's what I was thinking! Keeping a running log. It'll be interesting to keep tabs.

Hyperobject · 26/01/2026 17:16

I will start the list:

Digital ID
WFA
Farmer’s IHT
Pub business rates
Welfare reform
Grooming gangs enquiry
’Island of strangers’ speech
Two child benefit cap
WASPI compensation
Workers rights
Income tax thresholds.

Erm….must be some missing.

The Burnham issue: I have stashed industrial quantities of popcorn; please don't tell me the pyrotechnics will be delayed until Airmiles Starmer returns from his kow-towing jaunt to China.

The vultures are circling, its a dangerous time for him to be away. 🍿
Hopefully we'll get Lammy at PMQs to keep us entertained 🤡

....and they promised not to raise NI in their manifesto.

Hopefully Chagos and jury trials soon.

Yes I like that idea. We're nearly ready for a new thread and I'm still at work so haven't got time to put a list together rn.

If anyone else has time to compile something and post at the top of the next thread, that would be great 👍

Nice work @Hyperobject , yes - Chagos and Jury Trials would be good. Too late to hope they'll change their minds on dicking around with local elections, I suppose?

Talking of labour policies. One they didn’t u turn on of course was taxing education.

The VAT on education was supposed to eg. buy 6,000 new teachers for state schools. It was supposed to raise £1.6billion per year in tax revenue.

None of this has happened has it, shocker. We’re over a year in now. Where are the figures..

inkognitha · 26/01/2026 17:39

Another defection but the more talent Reform attracts, the more Nigel is gonna feel threatened. This man won’t share power or limelight nor do any work.

Give it a few months and sparks are gonna fly.

From the HoLLibrary:

’In December 2022, the consultancy Oxford Economics published ‘The impact of independent schools on the UK economy’, a report commissioned by the ISC.
**
The report found that ISC-affiliated schools contributed £14.1bn to the UK economy in 2021.[11] Extrapolating this to all independent schools, it estimated the total economic impact to be £16.5bn. This is measured in gross value added (GVA). Of the £14.1bn GVA contributed by ISC schools, £6.9bn came from the employment of teaching and support staff.

Economic benefit is also generated by the money independent schools spend on construction, IT support, equipment, catering and self-employed music and sport instructors, among other things.[12] It estimated that this amounted to £1.8bn in 2021. Oxford Economics argued that a further £5.5bn was generated from spending by teachers and support staff.’

Bridge doesn’t mention this does she. The silly sausage!

What talent does Reform have? That’s a serious question, it sounds sarcastic, sorry. I meant it - what insider talent / people does it have that we need to be aware of?

I’d be amazed if it broke even, and would hazard a guess that rather than any savings it’s added cost.

I always wonder what contortions they’d have over this if the UK were ever to seriously entertain rejoining the EU.

Bless he's doing two jobs, prime minister and foreign secretary.

I don't agree. He doesn't do the small stuff he's a figure head. He's smart buying in the brains as any good business man does. He's a very broad stroke man and not particularly hard working. He'll delegate where he can. Boris did the same as mayor.
