A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

KB is bigoted toward disabled people.

Oh, go on then, how have you arrived at that opinion? Is it just because she thinks that welfare reform needs to address the spiralling number of disability claimants and and that motability should be restricted to those with mobility problems?

AnnasFangs · 24/01/2026 11:52

I am curious @Gridania , are you American?

Do you know anything about how disabled people have been treated in this country by the conservatives party, and more recently Labour as well? It hasn't been good. Cutting support, knowing it will affect people that need it is completely unethical. Reform is fine, but not when you penalize people that actually need it.

No, I'm from the UK.

Thanks. It was your use of "restrooms" and "locker rooms" that made me wonder.

When you think about the amount of money that goes into funding wars, demonizing disabled people and making generalizations that they're a bunch of fakers is not only wrong, but it's a lack of prioritizing. People will always cheat the system, no matter what it is. It's not an excuse to cut support for people who need it. Yet that's what happens.

Oh, that's interesting, where abouts in the UK does the dialect call toilets restrooms? And spell demonising and prioritising with a z?

I think 'toilets' sounds kind of classless. It's a preference. But also pretty irrelevant.

Well, welcome to MN, Gridania.

So true @peacefulpeach

I have a spaniel on my knee demanding some exercise so I'm off to the moors.
Back later with 🍿 for some Burnham news.😁

Be back by 5pm 😀

Powell backing Burnham

Upstartled · 24/01/2026 12:47

Powell backing Burnham

I suppose that extinguishes any doubt about which way the unions are leaning. With the amount money they pump into Labour, I wonder if that sways the NEC decision?

Maybe if he goes for it it’ll be an issue if he’s blocked. Too many will speak up.

It’s now or never really for him too to go for it.

Upstartled · 24/01/2026 13:16

I wish he'd get a wriggle on. It's quite distracting. Or maybe this is political and he's waiting to get as much support as he can in before the deadline.

LupaMoonhowl · 24/01/2026 13:24

If he does go for it presumably there is then an election for Mayor? Wonder what that lineup would be.

If they're quick off the mark, they could do a mayoral ballot at the same time as the by-election. We all know Labour don't like spending money on elections.

I think he’d easily get backers in the party, especially if Rayner and Powell are already speaking up. It could be hard to block him if he goes for it as there’d be strong voices from those groups plus the unions.

It’s really can he get through the by election or just stay where you are. Would love to hear the conversations around whether to go for it.

Yes, I wonder who he has in his ear right now?

I think the whole TWAW batshittery has pushed a lot of women further to the right. That doesn't necessarily mean that they would like Farage or Trump though.

Do you ever think that women want a man who says when he's going to do it bloody does.

We're all spinning so many plates while men are dodging them in real life that we're thinking well at least they've made a bloody decision for good or for ill. We've had a belly full of u turners at home!!

Very true.
A politician who follows through and sticks to their principles is rare these days.

Speaking of shape-shifters, any news on Burnham? I can't see anything as yet.

He’s had enough time -for ages everyone has known that MP would have to resign.
Have any other candidate officially declared yet?

EasternStandard · 24/01/2026 16:40

Is it a post 5pm thing? Ie it goes to NEC then they announce?

Upstartled · 24/01/2026 16:43
